Neptune has kept intact its elegance that has made it a popular tourist destination over the centuries, since in the 16th century cardinals who were on holiday here started to build small buildings of leisure, an architecture that then evolved with many buildings from the early 1900s, with an eclectic style that can still be admired today.
The symbol of Neptune is the Forte Sangallo, built by Cesare Borgia, called the Valentino, and built between 1501 and 1503 by Antonio da Sangallo on a project by Giuliano Giamberti. Its function was to defend the city, considered at the time as a granary in Lazio, by pirate attacks; a defensive structure complete with a drawbridge that today goes beyond to enter and admire the internal courtyard and its various rooms, many of which are furnished with antiques dating back to the time of its construction. It is a majestic building that stands on the beach, with a quadrangular base of 320 square meters, for a height between 18 and 25 meters, four perfectly squared ramparts, with walls from the thickness of 5 meters. Inside, you can visit the Allied Landing Museum and the Antiquarium, with a superb sea view.
On the bright seafront is the Sanctuary of Neptune of Santa Maria delle Grazie and of Santa Maria Goretti, with most of the rooms dedicated to her and the miracles linked to her figure, and subterranes where dioramas are found that tell her story, beyond what a nice permanent crib. The medieval village, of which the massive walls are interspersed with modern buildings, in a singular contrast, shows several buildings in which to browse, the sixteenth-century baronial palace, for example, which can be seen on the facade, walled on the clock tower, under the coat of arms of the Colonna, an inscription in which we read as in 1569 Marcantonio Colonna, the hero of the battle of Lepanto, was concerned with beautifying the city. Also worth seeing is the seventeenth-century Palazzo Doria-Pamphilj, which preserves a fine cycle of frescoes dating back to that period.
In the heart of the village, there is also the collegiate church of San Giovanni Battista and Evangelista, now with an eighteenth-century look, but much older, given that tradition has it built on the ancient temple of the god Neptune, which is confirmed by finds of Roman era found in the subsoil. Among its peculiarities, inside rich in decorations, a giant organ and, outside, the so-called "bell", one of the four bells located at the top of the bell tower 27 meters high, with a diameter of 120 cm.
The well-equipped marina inaugurated in 1986, with its Sailing Club, which makes the city ideal for sailing regattas and Off Shore, with national and international events for all sailing classes, should be mentioned in Nettuno. The port is 3 meters long, 14 piers and 800 berths. But obviously Neptune is known for its many beaches, such as those around the village and under the Sangallo Fort. A few kilometers from the center, there is a magical place, the golden beach of Torre Astura, the fortress built in 1193 to a design by Mariano di Giacomo, called Il Taccola, on what remains of a Roman settlement with still the presence of large tanks used for fish farming. It is reached after a long walk through a forest of fragrant pines and shrubs in a verdant landscape of Mediterranean scrub. The beach is still a military area and is only open during the summer.
Craft items, from the warm colors of the sun, typical products such as wines and ciambelline to wine: you can buy inside the village and in front of the walls that also host many clothing and accessories stores, In via Romana, main street shopping, there is the Benetton megastore, the intimate Undercolors Benetton, Nara Camicie and many other shops with Marchi, in via Cisterna, km 1, there is the Cantina Bacco, where you can find not only the Cacchione, also in sparkling variant, but also the Red Neptune, Scoglio d'Orlando Rosso and Bianco, made with organic grapes.
To get up late, especially in summer, Nettuno is very lively with music, dancing and delicious drinks. In Via del Baluardo there is Berny staff, from 6pm happy hour. In Via dei Volsci, Lime Club Gallery. In via Michelangelo, the Infinito Disco Pub. By the sea, Old Rock Pub. In via Andrea Sacchi, Dylan Lab, Latin American music.
To eat in Nettuno, many locals on the waterfront and in front of the walls. As many, in the charming atmosphere of the village, between the streets and squares, practically crowned with trattorias and restaurants. Only a few names, among the many, Al Centro, piazza Colonna; Romolo, via the neighborhood; Borgo Antico, piazza Marconi; From Teresa, market square, Sottosopra, Via capitan donati.
