Wind Family Compound
The Vrbo add is a bit deceiving. The property is larger than advertised. It was large enough for the whole extended family and quite comfortable. The driveway is a bit small for the number of occupants it holds but that can be managed. The access to the lake could be a bit difficult if you have older folks in your group. There were stairs for the younger folks and a poorly maintained walking path some needed to navigate. The boats and floats for use were poorly maintained and quite dirty from sitting outside under one of the decks. The dock was quite large and shaded but it's suface was in poor condition. All told it was a decent place to vacation.

A wonderful family reunion
Overall, we loved our stay. The location couldn’t have been better, with plenty of room and activities for all age groups. That said, we felt that there are a few things that needed improvement. When we rented the property, there were enough bedrooms for the adults but we discovered there was one fewer than originally stated. The entry was difficult and we had to get a second code as the first one didn’t work. There are TVs that don’t work and missing remotes. One of bed actually has no bed in it. There were a few other minor issues that the owner should address. Overall, though it was a wonderful vacation! SML is an incredible vacation spot. We will return

Great home for Families
We had a wonderful time staying at the Wind Family Compound. This is a perfect property for families with children. There is plenty of space for everyone to spread out and plenty for kids to do. Everything seemed clean and well kept. The neighborhood offered a lot of privacy and felt safe. Everything seemed as described online. Ashley was very easy to connect with at any time. We look forward to finding an opportunity to return!

Lovely home at the lake
We had a lovely time at Smith Mountain Lake staying at this house! The yard was spacious along with the inside of the home! The kids enjoyed the game room. Everyone enjoyed their space for sleeping and the large areas for gathering. The home was clean and appeared as if some recent improvements were done. Would definitely recommend to friends!

More privacy than most lake houses
This was such a great stay for us because this home feels more private than most at the lake! There is a large yard and a feel that the other homes are not close. We had lots of space inside and outside of the home to gather and enjoy ourselves! The home was very clean and appears to have brand new carpet! The kitchen was fully stocked with everything we needed for cooking since we didn’t want to go out. Great spot for a large group without a doubt!

Lake Fall Gathering
This is an awesome house for a large group! Multiple levels to give everyone space for privacy but then big gathering areas to get together. The lawn care was finishing up when we arrived and the inside seemed freshly cleaned. You do have to take your own trash to the disposal area address given. The yard was really nice for the yard games we brought and we enjoyed using the fire pit every night. Definitely a relaxing time that no one wanted to see end.

Great Family Vacation
This was an excellent choice for our family vacation. The lake is beautiful, clean and great for fishing. The home was very accommodating and comfortable and was filled with evening and rainy day activities like ping pong and pool table, etc. There were eleven of us and we all felt like we enjoyed this beautiful home and the activities it offers. The screened porch was lovely and the dock was terrific for fishing and relaxing. We will return again as our family, ages 2-70 have all agreed. !

Property was neat, beds comfortable and location was amazing. There was enough to do for all ages inside the house. The management was quick to respond to enquiry. The only complaint is we need to dispose of the trash at a remote location (15min away) before checkout which was extremely inconvenient with young kids. For all the fees we pay, wish it was not the case.

Spacious and Clean - GORGEOUS Views!
We visited the area for a family wedding and had 15 guests (11 adults and 4 children) at "the compound". The layout is wildly pieced together, but perfect for a large family group like ours. The house was clean and bright, and the kitchen is well-stocked with supplies. There is plenty of outdoor furniture for everyone to enjoy the deck/dock areas. The lakeside view is awesome! The only negative feedback we had revolved around sheets and trash. Staying at a rental home, I expect to have to strip my bed - but the fact that we all had to put sheets on our beds was an unwelcome surprise (the sheets were washed and in the rooms, but we had to make our beds). We also had to remove all trash from the property and take it 10 minutes away by car - this proved to be a challenge when we were packing our rental cars with luggage and trash! We struggled to get the TVs to work - many of the remote batteries were dead and/or we couldn't find the correct remotes. Other than those minor items, it was perfect - highly recommend this property for a fall getaway!

Nice but quirky house
This older, but remodeled and enlarged home has an interesting footprint! As others have pointed out, you have to make the beds and haul your own trash. Trash drop off location provided by the host was 4.1 miles and 8 minutes one way. As others have pointed out, the home needs lots of TLC. One of the stove burners is tough to light and didn’t burn evenly. Check-in instructions mentioned a wood fireplace, but there was none. There were three gas fireplaces, none of which worked. Compared to other rentals, host was unresponsive once we checked in, but was quite active in requesting a photo ID and guest list. Home is listed at 8,000 sf, but Realtor.com, Zillow.com, etc list around 6,300 sf. Kitchen needs more serving spoons and regular glasses, wine glasses with host’s name were plentiful! TV weren’t matched with the remotes, and we only got one working. Overall not a bad stay, but not quite what was advertised.

Amazing retreat!
What an absolutely amazing property! The setting could not be more ideal! Our extended family enjoyed an entire week and will be returning! This property features one of the largest lots you will find on SML with mature trees and an unrivaled peaceful, serene setting. The landscaping is exactly what we hoped for when we booked our family vacation and the house is amazing! We did not have any issues during our stay but Ashley checked in with us and made our stay perfect in every way. We could not appreciate the hospitality more! The home is enormous, well cared for, and decorated perfectly for an ideal lake vacation. Ashley share with us many upgrades and improvements that she had done over the last year--new furniture, a new dock walkway, etc.The fact this property sits across from the state park keeps you private and allowed our family the retreat that we desperately desired! If you want an escape to paradise with a multimillion dollar home that is well maintained then look no further--the house, the oversized dock, and the landscaping of this property will definitely make for a truly memorable family vacation. We have already booked our stay for next year and after bouncing around between numerous lake properties the last few years will definitely be calling this one "home" for our family vacation for years to come! If you want a secluded mansion across from the state park on pristine waters with a perfect natural landscape then you will love this property, our family does!

Beautiful Lake; The house needs TLC and a deep clean
2 positives...1-The lake and the dock area of the lake were PERFECT. 2-The house size is great - we had multigenerational family of 20-space for everyone and multiple gathering/hangin spaces.When we arrived there was water flowing into the garage, game room and the basement room that has wall to wall carpet, it was soaked, game room and garage had puddles - we called, texted and emailed the owners, after 2 hours she said just keep us posted on the flooding, then never responded to any of our future texts calls or emails. The next day in the afternoon the cleaning people showed to help with the water, we were never told anyone was coming. I also showed them how dirty the kitchen was and they said the owners do not pay for that type of cleaning only surface cleaning. The house needs to be deep cleaned. It was very dirty and I am not a neat freak at all. The garage had construction debris, under the decks where the paddle boards and boats there is just so much junk you can't really use the items. The outdoor grill is DANGEROUS, the one on the deck, all of the burners are disintegrated and it does not light properly I would remove it before the roof catches on fire. The downstairs grill is not in any better shape but at least it is not by anything that will catch fire. When you rent large houses (sleeps 20) in a lake area you need to pay the extra for the cleaning, it can not just be surfaced cleaned everything was just really dirty.The beach area also needs attention.

Wow! What a weekend!
I was putting together a surprise 50th birthday gathering for my brother, and we had all of our family, as well as some of his college friends coming from New Orleans and Florida. I decided to try and book the Wind Family Compound, since we needed a place big enough to accomodate several families. Tyler and Ashely Wind were extremely helpful and so friendly in answering all my questions and helping me plan the weekend's itinerary. When all the guests arrived they were thoroughly impressed with this beautiful, spacious lakefront home. I heard adjectives like, "stunning" and "incredible". Everyone commented on how much privacy they enjoyed while still being in the same house. Bedrooms on multiple levels allowed for everyone to have their own space, but still feel cozy and connected. Tyler and Ashley had recommended several restaurants in the area and we chose one of their favorites for dinner Friday evening. Saturday morning brought a chartered fishing trip, another recommendation by the property owners, Tyler and Ashley Wind. Back to the house for grilling our catch on the large patio, with the provided gas grill. While the kids got aquainted with the game room, my Son in Law took the provided canoe out for a short excursion. After dinner, everyone gathered in the game room for ping-pong, billiards, and foosball. We cranked up the music on my ipod sound dock and young and old alike were dancing, singing, and ping ponging at the same time! It was a highlight of the weekend! Sunday brought beautiful sunshine and some time down on the property's two roomy docks. The quiet cove had only a small amount of boat traffic, and we almost felt like we had the lake to ourselves. Very Nice! The kitchen was well stocked with all the necessary pots, pans, and utensils, and has a large, beautiful table in the open dining area. It was very easy to prepare meals for the whole group. As far as the huge screened porch that overlooks the lake, words cannot do it justice. You just have to see it to believe it...such great lake views and so comfortable! In conclusion, all I can say is Tyler and Ashley have a real gem here. The Wind Family Compound was a prayer answered for our family...and a few friends...to enjoy a wonderful weekend! Clean, spacious, with all the amenities you would love to have at your disposal for a fantastic vacation. We can't wait to find an excuse to get back!

House wasn't clean upon arrival. Cleaning crew came back--stayed until 7 pm. Sent the below feedback night returned home (06/22). No reply until 11 July--then owners alleged damage to 7 towels. We stated that we didn't do damage and asked for full deposit. Received partial deposit on 21 Jul. 26 Jul, owner said that we had audacity to complain (ref feedback below) given $6K+ rate. R&R undone & additional $$/time lost for us. Excerpt of feedback to owners on 23 Jun We had a great time. I hope cleaning service found house in better shape than we found it. Feedback: - Lights on dock: No lights operable... Difficult to locate dock when arriving by boat after dusk. - Cobwebs: Recommend cleaning service clean-up cobwebs--appeared to be in-place for awhile around light fixtures... - Temperature control: Very cold in lower level; tried adjustments, but nothing worked... - Chairs on dock: Very comfortable... One is in need of repair -- screws coming detached from right side handle. - Gas Grill: Aware of policy that 2 tanks may be full, but wanted to let you know we had 1 full tank. The grill was clean, but gas burners were so full of soot that it flamed up while cooking and we ruined half our meal. We spent a couple of hours cleaning it. - Charcoal grill: Nice addition to the gas grill. Recommend supplying a small garden shovel to aid the renters in cleaning out charcoal. - Washer/dryer in garage: We left that one alone. No one came to repair as we recalled you mentioning. Not sure if wet laundry that was there last Sunday remained. - Canoes, kayak, paddleboat, rafts: Great touch -- enjoyed all throughout the week. - Sheets: Recommend having cleaning crew make-up the beds for the renters. We were with cleaning crew until 7 p.m. Sunday trying to get mismatched sheets, among other things, worked out. - Towels: Recommend having towels, handtowels, etc., for each bathroom for at least 3 days. This would be a nice touch. - Fridge in garage: Much needed. Freezer worked well; fridge section worked poorly. - Gas Grill: One of wheels not attached. Fell off when tried to move it. - Steps to main dock: Recommend installing handrail... - Game room: Fun w/ping pong, pool, fuseball, cornhole. Air hockey hand controller broken upon arrival. - Screened patio: Felt like pic on website made deck look larger than actual size. Gameroom bath: No garbage can in bathroom.
