The impressive gateway of the church stands as testament to the power the Jesuit missions held over the local populations. This red sandstone gateway once stood 30ft tall (10m) as it welcomed the native Christian population into it's cavernous interior.

San Ignacio Mini was a Jesuit mission established in 1610 with the aim of converting the local Guaraní natives. The mission moved to this location in 1666 and a large complex was erected to house and protect up to 4000 converts. The complex was built in Spanish baroque style around a central courtyard and included a large church, school, hospital, cemetery, dormitories and workshops.

The mission was largely abandoned when the Jesuits were expelled by Spanish decree in 1767, and was then destroyed by Paraguayan decree some 50 years later. The remains of the mission were rediscovered in 1897 and are now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

"This hotel was in a good location for restaurants. The room had plenty of space with very good beds (firm) and pillows for a good night's rest. The pool area was very busy and a great place to hang out after you've seen the falls. It also had a good restaurant and a spa area with reasonable massages that we did not get to experience."

"The a/c was leaking onto this light fixture, the room was nice loved the balcony looking into the lush vegetation. The restaurant was fantastic, breakfast was another story, you couldn’t serve yourself (buffet style) the cereal etc side you could but not the fruits cheese or ham side. The only eggs served are scrambled. The hostess the first day was not very friendly but day 2 and 3 this younger much friendlier hostess took great care of us!! "

"I had to double check what I was paying when I checked in here. It felt like I was staying in luxury that I normally cannot afford, yet this was so very affordable! The rooms are clean, we were in a studio and it was very large. The bathroom was very impressive and the patio in the back was large and comfortable. The pool area is great with a great bartending staff. The restaurant serves delicious food and the breakfast was better than I’m used to in a hotel. I would absolutely stay here again. "

"This is a very nice Mercure Hotel. It is a 15 minute ride to town; however, the taxi ride cost is only approximately $6 US dollars. The breakfast cost is $25 USD; however, it is excellent and plentiful. The service at the hotel, from the reception desk to housekeeping is excellent. Internet reception is very good. We did not use the pool nor the spa, so I can’t comment. "

"The breakfast buffet was just ok but it was fast and included into the room price. The caiparinas and mojitos at the bar were strong. The room had great water pressure. The conditions of the room were notably good however the WiFi signal couldn’t pass through the thick wall so no Netflix or YouTube or any channels were available. The TV was just an ornament. We didn’t find that out until the night after we checked in so we just accepted it as we didn’t want to move to another room. They don’t...
