The region
Wheddon Cross is a village in the parish of Cutcombe on Exmoor, based around the crossroads; the roads run from north to south between Minehead and Dulverton, and east to west between Taunton and North Devon. The village is argued to be the highest on Exmoor, standing at 980 feet above sea level, and the highest point on Exmoor, Dunkery Beacon (1704 feet above sea level) is the focal point of the village. Dunkery Beacon is about three miles from the village, there are fantastic panoramic views from Dunkery; wild moorland to the west, the Bristol Channel and Wales to the north, the rolling Brendon Hills to the east and the Quarme Valley to the south.

In recent years the village has become famous for the abundance of snowdrops in the nearby valley which has become known as 'Snowdrop Valley'. The snowdrops bloom around February and a park and ride system operates from the village to enable visitors easy access to the "carpet of snowdrops".

Wheddon Cross is surrounded by beautiful countryside; open moorland, wooded valleys and farmland. An abundance of wildlife can often be seen, including Exmoor ponies and red deer. There are a number of great walks along marked footpaths and bridleways, including the famous Coleridge Way which passes through.

The beautiful local church is St. John's, it dates back to the Norman Conquest and was mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086). St John has a 13th-century tower and has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade II listed building.

Wheddon Cross is a thriving community and offers many local services for a small village. A highly recommended place to stay! The cottage was very well equipped indeed. The quality of everything really stood out for us - a hotel style cottage :-) It's also full of character. Creaky old floors and low ceilings making for a cosy place to be. The location is lovely and quiet but easy to get to and to get out and about from as well.

I really loved my stay at the cottage. Wish I could have stayed longer! I loved the whole place - from the vintage hob and oven to the diddy window in the pantry, the fabulous window seats and the views from the windows. I loved the wonky wooden floors and thought the décor was charming. Very comfy bed too. I adored the picture postcard pretty village and that it was so quiet and peaceful.
