"I went for two night stay and I was very lucky with the weather. At times it felt like summer and I was able to sit and wait for squirrels in the nearby reserve. The hotel was comfortable. I had a very nice room which was slightly old-fashioned, but then that’s how the Shap Wells hotel is. It has a very quirky lift which, when you reach the first floor, it opens at the side. Downstairs, there’s a smaller room where we had breakfast and dinner, but there’s also a couple of other areas as the hotel does cater for quite a lot of people. There’s a bar and a few odds and ends like chocolate and cans of drink that are sold at reception. The staff were very friendly and helpful. A couple came into dinner and sat behind me coughing and sniffing and I was very worried because I’m going in for an operation in two weeks and didn’t want a cold. I was accommodated by the young lady in charge of the dining room and moved to the bar area so I could eat my extremely nice sticky toffee pudding away from the germs. This hotel is pretty isolated, even though it’s not very far off the M6 but it’s well worth a visit and it’s so nice to have the squirrel reserve just across the road. Highly recommended."

"We had a delightful time at the Troutbrook Inn. All the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, plus they were certainly dog friendly. As this was my first time travelling with my dogs this was so reassuring. Would certainly book again if making a return visit to the area. "

"Lovely stay at The Crown Inn - great welcome and all round excellent service from the team, very comfortable, clean and beautifully presented bedroom, great atmosphere in the bar , delicious food - spacious outside seating area overlooking the river - would not hesitate to return."

"Only slight criticism is id like bacon and proper sausages for breakfast, however location was good. Free parking. We got some fresh cookies on arrival which were amazing. Id definitely stay here again if im ever in penrith. Mark was an amazing host. "

"Hotel was absolutely amazing and the staff couldn’t do enough for you, our room (26) was perfect, balcony that looked out onto the castle and the music in the drawing room made a perfect castle atmosphere, breakfast was lovely and the staff even do a guided tour of the place with history information and even a video when you get onto the castle roof, would definitely stay again."

"Excellent hotel and apartments, We stayed in the apartments on the hotel grounds this were to a very high standard with everything you needed. My daughter and myself enjoyed our stay in one of the 2 bedroom one's each room offering a super king size bed and ensuite, TV's in each room, comfortable lounge area and well equipped kitchen, the hotel bar and restaurant is only a short walk across the car park with a great choice of lunch and evening meals available. The staff are super friendly and helpful"

"Ideal cottage for 2. Very warm (we had a winter break) and cosy. Red squirrels in the copse next door and a fabulous view of Blencathra. Dog friendly with a fully enclosed garden. We will be back. "
