Upon arrival the place seemed ok. Dirty carpets are not completely unexpected in a dog friendly place. First morning we realized the coffee maker was broken, the hot water maker for tea was broken, we were left 1 trash bag, a dirty old sponge and the "mats" in the bathroom had never been cleaned. The real fun started when the ants started invading in the kitchen through the rotten windowsill. I called the owner and he mentioned that he thought he had taken care of the problem from another renters complaint in March (we are now in mid April) but obviously not. He said that the other renter complained of ants in the kitchen and bedrooms (literally in the bed) and bath downstairs but his housekeeper didn't find any so obviously they were wrong. The only option given was to leave for the day with the kids and the dog while they sprayed. I said I was disappointed that we were not made aware of the issue in advance of rental and the owner was so rude and told us we could just leave and he would not charge the rest of the days. Of course that leaves my entire family to find another location to move to, pack up our stuff, spend additional money and waste our expensive family vacation because he had not properly maintained his property. He dared to tell me that in the mountains I should expect ants and spiders like I was a moron who had never spent time in Mammoth or traveling which I assure you is not the case. He mentioned again and again that he would have to take it up with his HOA as far as payment and maintenance, etc, which as a renter on a family vacation for a week is the last thing I should care about. I did contact HomeAway directly and they said that unless the owner asked us directly to leave there is absolutely nothing they could or would do. It was really the aggressive, arrogant, patronizing, condescending way that he spoke and dealt with me that was the real problem. My family ended up buying a bunch of ant traps and RAID rather than allow our trip to be ruined but really once you have to deal with that nonsense it most certainly takes away from the experience. Good luck with this guy and his lazy rental.
