Situated in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, one of England's oldest towns, there is a rich history dating back to the Iron Age. It became an important religious and cultural center during the Anglo-Saxon period, with the founding of Malmesbury Abbey in the 7th century by Aldhelm, a scholar and churchman.
The town played a significant role during the Norman conquest and the medieval period, with Malmesbury Abbey becoming a major center of learning. Much of the Abbey was destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century, but parts remain, including the impressive Abbey Church.
One of Malmesbury’s most famous historical figures is Eilmer (the name sake of our lovely home), a Benedictine monk from the 11th century who is said to have attempted human flight. Inspired by the legend of Icarus, Eilmer built himself a set of wings and leapt from the Abbey tower. He reportedly glided for a short distance before crashing, breaking both his legs. He survived and later claimed that he could have succeeded had he added a tail to his design!
Today, Malmesbury retains its historic charm, with its medieval streets, the surviving parts of the Abbey, and links to notable figures like King Athelstan, the first king of a unified England, who is believed to be buried there.
