The perfect getaway to relax and enjoy nature
My husband and I, and our dog, spent a "working weekend" at this cabin. It is located in a beautiful little valley off the Mississippi River. The property has a wonderful trail system that winds through woods, fields, and a stream. There is also a state natural area directly across the road, which we explored. The cabin itself has a wood burning stove, well stocked kitchen, jacuzzi bath, and is decorated in a lovely homey way. It was so relaxing. Even with snow and overcast skies, we really enjoyed this late October getaway. Charlene and John are pros; everything was clean and well organized, and they are super responsive owners. We hope to come again, and see what the place is like in each season.

Our family of 6 plus 2 dogs loved this cottage.
We were there when it was snowing and later in the weekend when it was sunshiny and warm. We lit a fire in the wood burning stove and walked outside and enjoyed the labyrinth. We heard the coyotes yip and watched the hawks fly over the bluff. We braked for turkeys and deer. We also made the short trek into Red Wing for serious shopping and spent time at Lena’s. In short we loved it all!

A perfect retreat
Charlene and John are delightful hosts who have created an eco-friendly and peaceful retreat in the cottage that shares grounds with the main retreat center. The location is totally quiet apart from the sound of birds and other wildlife. There are panoramic views of gentle woodland and meadowland and a creek on the expansive grounds. We were a bit too early in the season to take full advantage of the private walks as the owners were still working on some of the preparation after a harsh winter, although we enjoyed the labryinth and a hillside walk that they had conveniently marked out for visitors. Charlene makes some of her own aromatherapy lotions and sprays and provides these in the bathrooms at the cottage. Other thoughtful features include a supply of organic teas in the kitchen, interesting books and DVDs, and a gas grill. We took advantage of a massage and Energy Therapy during our visit and brunch one day over at the main building. Our party was 3 adults (we travelled with our adult son) and we each appreciated the tranquility and restfulness of the accommodation and the area in general. Hope to return in the not too distant future.

Loved it!
We were coming in to the area to check out the ice palace with the St Paul Winter Carnival. My family & I aren't big city folks, so when I saw this was an hour out of St Paul was immediately interested. Let me just say the drive there was breathtaking & once there, we weren't disappointed. As the pictures show it is nestled amongst the hills. Serene & lovely. Their post mentioned there were trails, although ungroomed, we brought our XCountry skis with & made our own path on the trails. Here again, very lovely with a babbling brook to boot. The cabin was quaint, actually bigger than I thought it would be. Had all the amenities we ever need. Absolutely loved the little wood stove & cozying up to that. Very interesting selection of books. Took the time to scan through several & walked away with a little more knowledge. In researching things to do in the area, my hubby came upon Nugget Lake Park which was within a 12 mile drive. There is quite a network of groomed trails there for skiing. Also a hill for tubing/sliding & a road that goes out on the ice if your interested in doing a little ice fishing. The drive to Nugget Lake will also not disappoint. If your interested in massage, yoga or a Japanese Steam tub (think that's what it is called) looks like that could also be an option with prior arrangement. If you're looking for a relaxing quiet retreat, this place should be on your radar. Thank you for being part of our memorable weekend.

Thanksgiving Weekend in Maiden Rock
Being from the area growing up, we decided to try something different for Thanksgiving. We stayed at John and Charlene's Cottage and had an absolute wonderful time. Great accommodations and the hosts were very polite and helpful. We have hunting land about 20 minutes from Maiden Rock so my son's and I also had some time to hunt. If available again next year, we will hope to do the same stay! One of our sons is getting married in May, so to accommodate, we will have to get him and his bride a room at the bed n' breakfast also. Thanks for the great weekend. Mike & Lucy Myers

Lovely setting and lovely cottage.
I highly recommend this cottage and really appreciate the fact that I was able to get an in-house massage ordered up. My dad and I will be back.

Serenity in a quaint cottage
Enjoyed our weekend stay in the cottage; the accommodations were clean and comfortable from living room to bedrooms. The kitchen is well supplied for an occasional meal. Several shelves of books for browsing and games were also available. The surroundings are peaceful and lovely, we walked the road as well as the mowed paths around the property and saw many birds and wildlife all around. Sitting on the porch of the cottage we were treated to hummingbirds sipping from the honeysuckle vine growing nearby. A lovely retreat!

perfect place to escape
Spent an entirely peaceful week here with my children, age 13 and 16. Just enough space for each of us to have some privacy. Loved the setting! We swam in the Rush River, rode bicycles, took pretty walks. Watched deer step through the front yard, heard Whippoorwills in the evening, saw Eagles, bonded with Sophia the kitty. Gorgeous scenery. Found amazing restaurants - especially the Harbor View in Pepin and the Smiling Pelican bakery in Maiden Rock. Even my son indulged in the jetted tub. Nice attention to detail in the cottage. Great selection of books and movies. Had fun exploring surrounding small towns. We will definitely be returning.

Perfect Getaway!
My husband and I decided to celebrate our 1 year wedding anniversary by booking a weekend in the cottage at Journey Inn, and it couldn't have been more perfect! The cottage was cozy and beautiful and we instantly felt relaxed and peaceful upon our arrival. Charlene and John were wonderful hosts, giving us excellent recommendations for dinner and even bringing over a basket of DVD's for us to hunker down with. On day two of our stay Charlene gave my husband and I the most wonderful massages in the cottage. There's nothing like waking up surrounded by a beautiful landscape, having morning coffee, and then having excellent massages all in the comfort of the cottage! It was a wonderful way to take time out from our busy lives to celebrate each other, and we're planning on making it a yearly tradition! Thank you Charlene and John for creating such a lovely getaway!! Heather & Dave Smith-Dickerson

Paradise in the country. My wife and I have stayed at Journey Inn on several occassions and always return home feeling refreshed and rejuvinated. We enjoy the quiet, the beautiful accomadations, the delicious food, the comfy bed. We can always count on a good night's sleep. The grounds are amazing: paths through the woods, open fields, a labarynth and eagles overhead. We plan on returning in the future, often. Thank you John and Charlene for creating this wonderful space.

Relaxing, Cozy Retreat
On our fourth visit to the Journey Inn, we stayed in the Cottage for a long, quiet weekend. The wood burning stove kept the cottage warm and toasty as we enjoyed the gorgeous view of the snow and trees. The kitchen is well stocked for those of us who love to cook, and we enjoyed a relaxing weekend of reading, cooking, and taking long walks. The bed was very comfortable, with luxurious sheets, blankets and duvet to snuggle into both for a good night sleep and an afternoon nap. Everything was clean and comfortable. Charlene and John are gracious, kind hosts who are always helpful in making recommendations or answering questions. We look forward our next visit!

4/10 Poor

Uncomfortable very uncomfortable
Abt the cottage: The couch is a double futon. Arms chairs in the living room are wicker. BEDS: futons, not spring mattresses. There are no comfortable spots to sit, lay down, relax. Good kitchen, excellent jacuzzi, spacious. It is not really secluded.
