South Kensington has held its place on the map as an area of cultural and scientific importance since the Great Exhibition of 1851, and some of the world's most prestigious museums and universities grandly line up along Exhibition Road, showcasing West London’s distinctive stucco style. With the Natural History Museum, Royal Albert Hall and V&A attracting such a vibrant mix of people, it's easy to forget that this is a residential area as well. Yet just by the Tube station is a continental style square often filled with locals breakfasting in the sun. Tucked behind the museums lie rows of mansion blocks, terraced houses clustering round pretty garden squares and fine examples of villa style housing. Residents tend to be professionals and the area is an unbeatable location for shopping, with two of London’s most iconic department stores nearby. The jewel in South Kensington’s dazzling crown is surely its proximity to the historic and beautiful Hyde Park.
Kensington emotes regal elegance. Old-world buildings seamlessly blend with the glass windows of artisanal cheese shops, pastry bakeries, and international consulates, lending the neighbourhood an air of polished refinement and perfect finishing. Its opulence doesn’t detract from the neighborhood’s inviting nature—Kensington Gardens, Kensington Palace, and the area’s myriad museums are frequented by locals and visitors alike.
South Kensington is one of London’s most affluent areas, that boasts an unbeatable range of free museums and beautiful open spaces, alongside its more up-market attractions. The Natural History Museum, Science Museum, and Royal Albert Hall are within walking distance of each other, connected by Exhibition Road. The Great Exhibition in Hyde Park in 1851 created the foundations for these grand institutions dedicated to the arts and sciences. It was this investment in the area that set in motion a building spurt of large terraced houses which give the district its current appearance as a high-class residential area.
Getting Around:
South Kensington has better transport links than most parts of South West London. The area is served by three tube stations, South Kensington, Gloucester Road, and Earl's Court which are all on the Piccadilly, District and Circle lines. As a result, a journey to Central London via Piccadilly Circus takes just 8 minutes, while East London is just a 24-minute ride away via the Circle Line.
