Kauai Inn is a charming older hotel with friendly and efficient staff & quiet rural/residential neighborhood feeling. Located in a narrow canyon, the hotel is about a 20 minute walk (1 mile) to the shoreline, beach, shopping and dining area of Kalapaki Beach & Nawiliwili harbor, with its cruise ship dock. Here, you get the traditional Kauai Island experience compared with more developed touristy neighborhoods, so you will see feral chickens and peacocks wandering around everywhere outside your room. The hotel has older plumbing fixtures, but for us everything worked fine. Guest laundry is available. After dark, the pool area often has live music. Room security is not a modern digital key card, but a simple brass room key, and you might need to jiggle the lock sometimes, but that's part of the charm. The pool is small but well-maintained. Our room was compact but adequate for our needs, with both microwave and fridge, in addition to all the usual amenities. Staff was always available to help us or answer questions, and they are happy to loan you (free) a portable beach chair or umbrella, if you like. As of 12/2024, the small shoreline road connecting this neighborhood has a bridge over a small local stream. The bridge has fallen into disrepair, so cars are blocked, but you can still walk or bicycle, no problem. If you want to drive to Kalapaki Beach for some reason, the necessary detour route (5 miles) is easy, if not obvious. 9.5/10 for charm, price and location.
