Country Hideaways | Briar Cottage | Middleham

Briar Cottage, dating from the 18th century, has been renovated to reveal some of its original features and is part of a small, interesting, terrace which sits on the fringe of the cobbles looking out towards the torn ramparts of Middleham Castle. In the quiet, upper market place there are small formal gardens and ancient cobbled areas which compliment the pretty traditional stone cottages.

Entry, at the front of the cottage, is to a bright lounge with Victorian fireplace and a dining room area with slate tiled floor which views out into the flagged courtyard. From the dining area there is a pretty, well equipped, fully fitted, shaker style kitchen and slate floor. To the side of the entrance lounge there is another cosy lounge which has a stone arched fireplace with multi-fuel stove.

A stairway rises from the lounge to a small landing serving three bedrooms and a and a shower room with electric shower, washbasin and toilet.. One bedroom has a double bed, one has twin beds and the other has a single day bed. The double and twin rooms view out over the cobbles towards the castle.

A stable door leads from the dining room to a courtyard with border gardens and a flagged patio area. This courtyard area can also be reached from the market place through a private alleyway, with a door, leading between the adjacent cottages.

Briar Cottage has been renovated to reveal wooden lintels above the windows and stone work. The use of half-glass doors allows natural light to warm and brighten all the rooms. A cosy cottage, full of character, provides a good high standard of accommodation.

Lovely cosy cottage, very well appointed with quality furnishings throughout. Great location for country walks from the door and with local shop, pubs, tearoom and restaurant all a short walk away.

Perfect place
The cottage was picturesque, and we'll furnished. Wonderfully comfortable beds. Overall the squeaky clean cottage, & the lovely sitting out areas, both front & back were well tended. We will certainly be back!

Cosy, well equipped centrally located cottage overlooking Middleham Castle
Our family of 4 and medium sized dog stayed here over October half term for 4 nights. We loved the location, centrally located in this lovely market town with so many beautiful sights to visit and walks from the doorstep. Pubs and shops within walking distance and a well equipped cottage with most appliances (just missing a dishwasher) and parking spot outside the door. We had a wonderful stay and hope to return one day.

Lovely cottage in a pretty village
We had a great stay, very clean. Although the outdoor space is enclosed parts are accessed by other properties, luckily nobody else appeared to have their pooch with them. Also the property didn't have a bath as is described, and I was slightly disappointed by this. Nice holiday.

Amazing cottage with imposing view
This was our second visit to Briar Cottage which is a well appointed impeccably clean property that provides everything you need. The interior is beautiful with lots of references to the village and its history. The view is incredible and we love the fact that on arrival you don’t need to get back in the car until it’s time to come home ! Perfect in every way!

Cosy comfortable cottage in the centre of Middleham
Lovely cottage for a break in the Yorkshire Dales. Middleham is an interesting village and the cottage is well equipped and laid out for a lovely short break. We loved the kitchen with everything we need to genuinely self cater. Loads of walks straight from the door and easy access to the beautiful Dales all around. A bit of a gem!

Lovely cosy cottage
We have stayed here many times and at different times of the year. Autumn months are our favourite when we can make use of the lovely open fire. Especially good this time to be able to watch a good selection of films in the evening on the upgraded TV. Spring/summer it's lovely to either sit outside at the back of the cottage in the lovely quiet courtyard or at the front watching the racehorses trotting by with the castle as a backdrop.

Gem of a cottage
The cottage is delightful, in an outstanding location just below Middleham Castle. Middleham is an excellent place to stay, with its friendly local pubs, shop and chippy, and stunning views all around. It is also handy to be close to Leyburn, where there are more shops, cafes and pubs. The cottage itself is a gem of a place. Really spacious, thoughtfully decorated and extremely comfortable. The little patio out the back is very private and quiet. And the parking outside the front door on the cobbled area is also very good. All in all, a brilliant cottage in a fab place. A tremendous base for walking and sightseeing across Wensleydale.

Lovely cottage in historic setting
Briar Cottage is a lovely relaxing place to stay. The cottage is clearly much loved and has been well looked after. Great facilities, very spacious for the two of us , ideally located on a street leading up from the centre of Middleham. Parking was straightforward immediately outside the cottage. there were several great walks directly from the cottage , down towards Coverdale and East Witton or up towards Penhill Beacon. Middleham is a great centre with its historic castle and it is a thriving centre for racehorse training. The village has a general store, tea room , two pubs and a hotel/ restaurant all within a short walk of the cottage.

A lovely cottage in the heart of Middleham
3 adults staying for a short break. Comfy beds, everything we needed (dishwasher would have been great but no idea where it could have fitted in). It’s a compact cottage but we didn’t feel we were getting in easy other’s way. The location was so good as we looked out over the castle and it was only a short walk to several good pubs -we had an excellent Sunday lunch at The Tack Room and staff were so friendly -plus great beer-in the Richard 111 pub. Loved watching the horses going past on their way to and from the gallops. Lots of lovely walking done as the weather was kind to us. We would stay here again without a doubt.
