From the East Lodge, you have direct access to Balcarres’ elegant
parklands and ancient woodlands, as well as the beautiful rolling hills that
surround the property. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can climb up to
the Craig, a unique 18th century ruined tower, or even play a round of golf
at the world-class Dumbarnie Links, located on the Estate grounds, while
taking in the dramatic views of the North Sea. There is also an abundance
of scenic walks to enjoy, including a forested den that leads you from the
North Lodge through the heart of the estate along a stunning burn – or if
you’d rather brave the sea air, head to Largo bay and amble along
Balcarres’ pristine 2-mile beach.

Exploring the East Neuk of Fife
Foodies
Foodies
The East Neuk boasts a burgeoning food scene, with highlights including the Bowhouse Market, the Kinneuchar Inn, David Lowry's fresh seafood, and the award-winning Ardross Farm Shop. Local towns and villages, including St Andrews, Elie, Crail and Anstruther, are home to a wide range of restaurants and traditional pubs.
Golfers
For those passionate about golf, the newest addition to Fife’s golfing coast –
the world-class Dumbarnie Links – is not to be missed. Having recently
hosted the 2021 Women’s Scottish Open, Dumbarnie Links is one of the
many internationally renowned golf courses located in this scenic corner of
the world. In addition, The East Lodge is also situated less than 15 minutes’
drive from the renowned home of golf, St Andrews.
Outdoor Adventurers
Discover the charming fishing villages that dot the coastline of the East
Neuk, such as Elie, St Monans, Crail, Pittenweem, Kingsbarns, and
Anstruther, where you can enjoy a beautiful (although perhaps blustery!)
beach walk. If you venture towards Elie, you can also explore the iconic
lighthouse and ancient Lady’s Tower on the edge of town – or, if you are
feeling particularly courageous, try your hand at some invigorating water
sports or the Elie Chain Walk. A unique feature of the Fife Coastal Path, the
chain walk offers the brave explorers among us the chance to scramble
along chains built into a section of the cliffs towards Kincraig Point and
Shell Bay.
Explorers
If you’re seeking cultural stimulation, you can take a short drive to the
medieval town of St Andrews, the seat of Scotland’s oldest university and
site of romantic castle and cathedral ruins, as well as museums,
independent retailers, and stunning architecture. If you’re looking to learn
more about Scotland’s renowned gin and whiskey production, many local
distilleries offer tours, such as Eden Mill and Kingsbarns.
