The positives first. Villa Bel Air was the right size and had the right facilities, well situated, for our three-generational holiday on Ile d Ré. The options of inside and outside eating were perfect and we were mostly very lucky with the weather, which enabled us to enjoy the pool. The eclectic furniture and décor are unique! Plenty of bathrooms and WCs
My wife and I were proprietors for many years, of a large, 19th century chambres d’hôte house and I just wanted to let you know our thoughts:-
As I said on departure to Roman, the agent for changeover, the overall impression though, is of a house that is tired in many respects and in need of love.
The kitchen, though large enough, is a bit of a mishmash and the original part distinctly off-putting. The stone sink, though an interesting piece of history, looked a health hazard, so it and the adjacent work surface were not used. The whole house was OK but far from super clean on arrival and it is probably hard to make it so.
The house has clearly seen many extensions/changes over the years, with attendant plumbing idiosyncrasies, but for the first five days of our holiday, before a plumber changed some pipework and the vacuum truck paid a second visit, we had blowback of foul-smelling water in two parts of the kitchen when the showers were used.
