Rustic Luxurious Lodge in Arizona's White Mountains

Thunderhorse Lodge is a large 7500 square foot lodge located on 20 acre, secluded ranch in the White Mountains of Arizona, with a 4 season climate, snow in the winter and pleasant temps in the summer. The Lodge and surroundings are a perfect getaway from the summer heat of southern Arizona locations and a great fall/winter destination for skiers and hunters. Recently constructed (2013), it is the perfect setting for families, corporate getaways or other groups. Sorry, no wedding ceremonies at the Lodge.
The Lodge is professionally decorated in a rustic western mountain motif, prior guests have remarked that the interior reminds them of a national park lodge. The massive Great Room is perfect for large group gatherings. The large indoor stone fireplace is a great place to gather with family and friends. The Lodge has an enormous fully appointed kitchen with granite countertops, a Thermador refrigerator and freezer, a double oven, 4 burner Thermador gas stove and a convection microwave. There is a wood burning stove for additional warmth and ambiance on cold winter evenings. A favorite of prior guests is to have a cowboy cookout using the authentic Old West style barbecue outside next to the fire pit. The Lodge does have central heat and air conditioning for convenient temperature control.
There are five bedrooms including two master bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. The Jacuzzi in master bedroom one is a perfect place to soak and relax after an active day. All of the bedrooms are large and spacious with ample room to accommodate multiple guests. If an indoor privacy break is needed from the rest of the family/group, there is an upstairs loft where you can settle into an easy chair or sofa and read a book or just gaze out over the meadow. Parking is in front of the Lodge, there is a garage but it contains the owner's personal items and is not available to guests.
For the horse lover, there is a horse corral so you can bring your horses on vacation too. Guests are responsible for feeding their horses, cleaning the stalls and placing manure on the compost pile (wheel barrow and rake provided). Trails start within 1/2 mile into the national forest. The White Mountains has an excellent trail system. No animals permitted in the house.

ACTIVITIES: Activities at the Lodge and Ranch are endless. You can ride horses on the ranch, fish or kayak at the nearby lake, mountain bike or go on a nature hike. Or you can just relax on the veranda and listen to the cool wind blowing through the pines and watch elk and deer graze. For equestrians, you can trailer your horses up to the ranch (with your own private corral) and both you and your horses can have a wonderful vacation. Ride on the ranch or through the nearby national forest. When it’s time to take a break indoors, break out a board game, play indoor shuffleboard or basketball or read a book from our Great Books Classics library.
Thunderhorse Ranch is located in Lakeside, near Show Low and Pinetop. Within a short drive there are nice restaurants, golfing, fishing, bowling, a family fun center, community aquatic center, indoor gun range and movie theaters. There is a quaint farmers market just down the road open on Saturdays all summer long. Sunrise Ski Resort (great skiing in the winter and mountain biking in the summer!) is less than an hour's drive away.
The Lodge is the perfect destination to escape the Arizona summer heat and an ideal place for your fall or winter ski excursion or hunting trip.

Secluded and quiet, very rustic
Beautiful property and views. Private and quiet. We loved the huge family room and kitchen. Be prepared for the dirt road leading to the house. The property could use a deep cleaning and more portable fans to keep it cooler during the day/night.

Unfortunately a bad experience here
My family had reserved this property for Thanksgiving. My husband, unexpectedly, ended up in the hospital. I reached out to the owner as soon as I could on November 14th because my husband was in serious condition. My husband ended up having emergency surgery. I tried to reschedule as my husband was not released from the hospital therefore no way we could go. Henry decided he could not accommodate and reschedule "due to it being so close to the day." I would recommend going elsewhere considering the owners appear to only care about money for themselves. Now my children, who almost lost their dad, will not get a vacation this year. Sincerely, Very Disappointed Family

Outstanding Getaway
This is a beautiful place to stay. It was nice to get that family out away from all the technology. Not having a TV required the kids to find outdoor activities or nice family time while inside. The kitchen is amazing and is plenty big enough to cook for lots of people. The description of the facility is a bit misleading. It states it can sleep 20 people, although that may be true, it does not explain that is acheived by using all couches and extra cots that are provided. Total beds include two kings, two queens in 4 different bedrooms and a full and twin in another bedroom. All other slleping arrangements are couches and cots. Once we arrived we asked the host about the fire place in the master bedroom and it was explained that the fireplace had not worked in quite some time. All in all this was a great get away for us and we would gladly return. Thanks again.

Super cool Lodge
The Lodge is a unique and very cool place to stay. The main floor has plenty of room for everyone to hang out. The shuffleboard was lots of fun - the Foosball table is broken, I'm sure that would have been fun as well. The kitchen is fully stocked with anything you would need. The house sleeps 11 in beds. There is a loveseat that has a sofa bed in it - would work for 2 small children but probably better for one. Although we weren't able to find sheets for that pull out. The outdoor space is great for sitting by the firepit. There are several large benches to enjoy for seating. The grill was neat for cooking dinners. You do need to bring firewood for the firepit and charcoal for the grill. Only reason I'd give it 4 stars rather than 5 is the sleeping situation. We had one person without a bed. Thanks for sharing your home with us - lots of good memories were made!

Great place to gather!
We stayed here as two families of four and the grandparents. We had an amazing time! The game room was wonderful for the kids and adults. We had a campfire outside and roasted s’mores. The kids LOVED getting to visit the horses each day and even got to go on a short ride. The property manager is probably one of the most interesting people you’ll ever meet. He was so nice and welcoming and helped us anytime we had a question. There was a ton of space at this place, so plenty of room for a big group. The kitchen is wonderful! Everything you could ever need was there! We loved this trip and hope to return again!

We rent cabins in the White Mountains often to escape the heat of the valley and this by far has been our favorite spot! There are so many riding trails accessible directly from the property which was a huge plus to our group. We will definitely be back soon!

An Awesome Property
Can't begin to say enough wonderful things about this property and our experience while staying there. From the moment we walked into the Lodge, we were all in awe over the grandeur of the interior. From the Western/Country motif and various chandeliers to the huge modern kitchen with top of the line appliances. The property is engulfed with tall pines and we enjoyed all the shade they gave. This property enabled us to enjoy ourselves beyond belief. A special thanks to Grant, the Lodge Manager, who was so very accomodating and wonderful to our family by providing a tour of the stables and allowing us to pet and experience the horses. Thank you Mark for allowing us this experience, we hope to see everyone again soon. Doug M.

Picture are deceiving
Wound NOT recommend! The property is not well maintained, spiderwebs all over, not a single lamp through the property has all working light bulbs, heater does not work properly. Bring your own firewood, and good luck getting the owner to respond to your calls or text. Three of our cars got stuck on our way to the cabin as the snow was two feet high and the owner refused to plow his road and we had to hire a company to help us recover our cars and Clear the road of snow. We got charged $1,500 for this.

Unpleasant stay. Please return my deposit
First off, Mark (the owner) will take your deposit at all costs. He stole my deposit. Initially we booked it from February 22nd though the 24th. But as you all know, the 22nd was a very snowy day in all Arizona. I called Mark many times but wouldn’t answer and voicemail was full to see if I could cancel and get reimbursed. About 3 hours later I was able to get a hold of Mark and wouldn’t reimbursed even though there was nothing we could do about Mother Nature. We ended up agreeing on checking in on February 23rd and out on 25th. Some family member who were going to help with the overpriced bill couldn’t make it so I ended up paying their share. When we got there, the driveway to his cabin was impassible due to large amount of snow. He didn’t even care to take care of that. Luckily I was able to get a hold of Mark and he had his neighbor plow the snow with a tractor which it took about two hours. By this time, it was dark and getting very cold. Finally around 7 PM we made it inside the cabin. At first glance, the cabin is beautiful, but later found out that most of the doors to bathrooms did not lock. One of the bedroom’s electricity wasn’t working so was very cold. Around mindnight the temperature outside was around 8 degrees. The inside of the cabin was 58 and just would not get hotter then that. All of us were very cold. The downstairs bathroom did not have hot water so everyone had to use the upstairs bathroom to take showers. Over all we made it work. When we left on Monday, we left trash bags inside the house as there were no bins near by to store trash. My family was nice enough to clean the kitchen and everything around. We had to leave a broken down truck because the water pump broke but was left near the main road which was clearly not in Mark’s property. On Wednesday Mark emailed me accusing us of breaking into one of his cabin’s near by and leaving a mess and leaving a broken down truck in his property. He later provided pictures of the supposedly broken in cabin. The pictures showed footprints on melted snow clearly not the same day we were there as he claimed. (Pictures were also inspected and agreed by a private investigator.) The pictures showed a combination lock which clearly someone had the combination. And the trash inside was a lot, like someone was staying there for several days. I pleaded with Mark to call police and investigate but he just kept accusing us of being responsible for that.
