Colorful, Cozy Cottage on Pearl Lake

Tall Pines is comprised of two private living spaces (all yours!). A cottage with 4 sleeping areas and a separate loft with two bedrooms. Located in the midst of a 22-acre hardwood forest. Pearl Lake, an 800-acre spring-fed lake, is a virtual wildlife preserve, with bald eagles, blue heron, and loons nesting here. The swimming, kayaking, fishing, and hiking are excellent. Some boats are available including two paddle boats and kayak. We have a small beach area, smaller than usual due to exceptionally high lake water this year. New air conditioning unit. Comfortable living rooms with big-screen TV. Dining area and well-equipped kitchen with dishwasher. Linens, towels, and other amenities are provided. A large deck surrounds the cottage, great for dining outside and catching beautiful sunsets.

The main cottage has an open floor plan. There is a queen-size bed in an alcove, with a screen separating it from the living room. There is a king-size trundle bed on the four seasons porch. There are two bedrooms, one with queen-size and one with double bed downstairs, and two full baths with showers. The separate loft has two bedrooms with queen-size beds, a kitchenette, and a large sitting area with TV, an excellent haven for grandparents, and a quiet space for young children to nap.

Pet-friendly!

Amenities: TV, dishwasher, washer and dryer, paddle boats, two kayaks.

Activities: Swimming, boating, fishing, shopping at the renowned specialty stores in Traverse City. Golf, horseback riding and exploring Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore.

Area: Pearl Lake is 20 miles from Traverse City and 16 miles from Interlochen. There is a well-equipped grocery/general store in Lake Ann, 2-1/2 miles away.

A Great Home-Base Near Sleeping Bear Dunes!
We always travel to Michigan from Minnesota in a large group to visit extended family annually. We typically book a VRBO near the Frankfort area but also have family in Lake Ann so figured we would change it up this year. Maggie & Sam Hanes' property on Pearl Lake is perfect for those looking for large-group accomodations. The hosts promptly replied to all email communications and were reasonable in their property rules and expectations. It was awesome to have such a great view and a lot of privacy with no issues parking. The location is great for enjoying Sleeping Bear Dunes and Lake Michigan beaches. Also, the lake is beautiful but is more of a fishing lake or a lake to enjoy nature rather than a swimming lake. Be wary of swimmer's itch! Small cars may have difficulty getting down the road to the property, especially in the winter. Also, there is little to no cell phone coverage at the property, and we did not have access to wifi during our stay.

Tall Pines - Good Place for a Stay
Overall, we were happy. It's on a beautiful lake and the listing was accurate. There were enough rooms that our party (8 adults + 1 infant) was comfortable. The boats were a nice touch and we took those out several time. The location is great, close to Sleeping Bear Dunes and Traverse City. I would only give 3.5 or 4 stars out of 5 reasons. First, the place could be cleaner. One of the beds is on the covered porch and it should have been nice to sleep there, but the windows were extremely dirty. The outdoors patio tables were grimy too, even on arrival. Second, while the property owner was extremely communicative upon arrival, I had a few questions in the months before our rental and they sometimes took ~1 week or more to respond. Third, there is a tight, spiral staircase that definitely would not have been approved if this house was built today to get to the two bedroom basement. We called it the "spiral staircase of death." My husband fell down it once and I hit my head on it another time. Fourth, we were only given 1 set of keys for the house. Since the house that advertises fitting 10+ people, you definitely need more than 1 set of keys for when different groups in your party come and go separately. Fifth, the owners wanted me to send a check for $500 for a deposit outside VRBO, which they said they'd destroy if all was well after check out. We worked it out, but I really didn't appreciate being asked to make a payment outside VRBO.

Get family trip …just needs a few tweaks:)
We are a multiple family group- traveling with our elderly parents. We had a very memorable time while staying here and it held our families comfortably! The VIEW was AMAZING and the LOCATION was quiet and very relaxing. Close to Glen Arbor where we spent a day or 2 kayaking the Crystal River(highly recommend) and renting a pontoon for a day on the Caribbean blue waters of Glen Lake (rental from Glen Craft Marine great experience and HIGHLY RECOMMEND) . We anchored on a sandbar and swam all day- GREAT FOR ALL AGES 5years to 77years old!!! Traverse City was close too- just a little busy for us🙂and Sleeping Bear Dunes was super close also- nothing we went to was more than a 1/2 hour trip - at the most!! We loved our visit to Leland and we also spent a couple days at Empire Beach- great swimming there. Clear water, great rocks, and easy access -car lot to waters edge. Plan on eating at Shipwreck while you are there…DELCIOUS, huge sandwiches with fast, GREAT service!! DISAPPOINTED that the swimming beach and dock area at the cabin was not what we had expected. It is more of a deck by the water- and the beach was “too natural” for a great swim(a bit envious of the beach across the lake and just down from us). The kids definitely could not jump off the deck into the lake BUT you will still have a great time here - if you can make those adjustments to your itenerary Sam was very responsive and receptive to all our suggestions- great host! We LOVED our time here.

Great accommodations and property
Kids loved the dock, jumping and fishing off it. The kayaks and peddle boat were also a huge hit, for all of us. We loved the space the property gave us, especially the sunroom. Traverse City is only a 20 min drive from the cottage. The only issue we had is the fridge in main cottage broke and it was an inconvenience to carry the perishable items back and forth to the other fridge. Mark replaced the main cottage after a day and everything was back to normal. Mark and Val were very attentive to our needs and very kind, we look forward to booking Tall Pines again soon!

TC 2023
Mark and Val were exceptional hosts. They were responsive to any questions/needs our group had. The lake was beautiful and serene. We had plenty of space for our group with the 2 cabins. We realize being on a lake comes with spiders but some overall deep cleaning of cobwebs/spiderwebs is needed behind beds, dressers & in cupboards. Overall we had an excellent time. The beach area was nice and plenty of equipment to use.

Perfect Michigan Getaway
You could not ask for a prettier and more peaceful setting on Pearl Lake- wonderful views of the lake from the living room, deck and apartment. We enjoyed eating on the deck (three tables to accommodate us all) and relaxing on the other deck down the steps to the lake as well as the little beach a few steps away. We used the kayak and canoe every day. The main house is a bit quirky but spacious and comfortable. The apartment above the garage a few steps away was perfect for our daughter, son-in-law, and two little girls. We would definitely rent Tall Pines again for a summer vacation.

Two separate buildings.
There are actually two separate buildings, it still worked for us, but the description doesn’t really state that. There is not a beach right in front of the cottage as it looks in the picture, it is off to the side of the cottage and can not be seen from the cottage, the beach slopes quite a bit. The children still enjoyed themselves, but it could be a little challenging for older guest.

Memories of a lifetime
There was 13 of us total between adults and young kids. The adults have vacationed together for 20 plus years and this place reminded us exactly of where we use to vacation too. The quiet, the impeccable sunrise and sunsets and being in Northern Michigan was something we will cherish forever. Val and Mark were incredible hosts and responded promptly if we had a question.

Great family vacation!
My siblings and I and our spouses and kids stayed here for a week and a great time!! We spent several days around Pearl Lake, using the multiple boats available and fishing. We also took day trips to Empire Beach, Sleeping Bear dunes, and Traverse City. A great mix of things to do - something for everyone! The cabin was well cared for, the only downside was no WiFi.

We had a wonderful week and perfect weather for northern Michigan. The area is very quiet and secluded and the lake and wild life are very nice. The accommodations were very nice, although we were a bit surprised that there were two separate buildings and only 3 of the 6 sleeping areas actually had a door and had some privacy.

Our stay at Lake Ann
First off, Val and Mark, the owners, were very nice. They were very responsive to questions we had during our stay. They also live on the property. This rental consists of a Main House and a detached Carriage House. The Main House, though older, was clean, neat, and nicely decorated. The kitchen was well stocked with a variety of pots, pans, dishes, utensils, and glass wear. It also had a dishwasher though we did not use it. The Carriage House appeared to be recently updated with 2 bedrooms, a full kitchen, and a bathroom. Our group only used it for sleeping. Property has two very used gas grills and one open air charcoal grill. The gas grills could use some love. One had an entire diffuser missing and you could not use the right side of the grill. Our main reason for choosing this property was because it allows dogs. In the contract we signed and sent back, it states that you may leave your pet unattended on the property but that it must be crated. When we arrived (without our dog, plans changed) it stated in a Things To Know book that No pet could be left unattended at the property, not even crated, because they could howl and disturb the neighbors. It stated that If you leave the property the dog must go with you. We would have been in for a surprise had we brought our dog. Lastly, it was required that all towels, sheets, and pillowcases be washed, dried, folded, and placed on the foot of the beds prior to checking out. With Checkout Time being 10am, we had to get up extra early to leave time to cook breakfast, wash and dry dishes, shower and still leave enough time to get all the required laundry washed, dried, and folded.

Lovely Lake Pearl
Had a great vacation in Lake Ann. The location is great, well situated for activities in the area. We had two families of 4, the adults utilized the two bedroom modern apartment above the garage a short distance form the cottage. The four kids each had a bed in a separate space in the cottage. The layout has one bed to the side of the family room, one on the sunporch and two in the basement with one being private. The basement bathroom has the shower in the hallway so the kids all had to shower in the upstairs bath. The cottage had a fully stocked kitchen, tons of towels, satellite TV, lots of outdoor space to eat, sit and relax. The listing did say internet, we were surprised when the contract said no WiFi. Once noted the listing was updated to reflect that. We did have cell phone reception. Despite the high water levels there was a nice beach area between the cottage and neighboring house with lounge chairs, fire pit and wood, paddle boats, row boat, canoe, and dock the kids enjoyed jumping off. Our dog had the best time swimming, and enjoying the outdoors. The layout worked for us and overall we all enjoyed our stay at the lake and would return.

Great place for large number of guests
Accommodations were excellent: linens, towels, beds, bathrooms, bedrooms, gathering rooms and kitchens all met and/or exceeded our expectations. Outdoor deck, patio furniture, lakeside decks and docks, and beachfront with fire pit and watercraft were also excellent features. Price was extremely fair for what you get. The lake view of Pearl is spectacular, and the lake itself (~325 Acres) is mostly state forest and conservancy land so very little lake traffic: very secluded place. Perfect for kayaking/canoeing and exploring. Several hiking options are right outside your door. Location is great: you are only minutes away from Lake Michigan beaches, Traverse City, Frankfort, Empire, Glen Arbor, Leland, many gold courses, many hike/bike trails, many more wineries, distilleries and breweries, and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lake Shore. Highly Recommended
