This, our third holiday at Casa Barbara - a traditional Moorish house situated in the tiny "Pueblos Blancos" of Ferreirola, tucked away on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada - as before, did not disappoint.
The warmest of welcomes from Barbara our incredibly helpful and friendly host, the well equipped and spotless kitchen, the pretty balcony overlooking the mountains, the comfy bed, the only sounds the buzzing of lazy bees and darting swifts, you can feel your muscles start to unwind as soon as you arrive.
It's perfect if you appreciate peace and tranquility, walking in the mountains, breathtaking scenery and soaking up the atmosphere of rural Spain.
There are no bars or restaurants in Ferreirola, but a short walk to Mecina Fondales (the next group of villages along) and you'll find a few places to eat, including an excellent vegetarian restaurant. Go a little further afield to some of the other villages in La Taha and you'll find many more restaurants. However, if you decide to "eat in", you will have the "best table in the house" on your very own balcony.
If you feel like enjoying nothing more than a cool drink and a good book, Barbara has thoughtfully provided well stocked bookshelves which include guides to the vast network of walks and maps of the surrounding area, and there's a rooftop terrace with stunning views, perfect for relaxing, but be careful of the low beam as you make your way up!
If you enjoy nightlife, coach tours, beaches or theme parks then this is probably not for you, here you must make your own entertainment. For me, the worst thing about staying at Casa Barbara is going home, it gets that bit harder every time. We'll definitely be returning next year.
