Hostel was not staffed 24/7. Arrived at 18.30 to locked door with instructions pinned to door on how to gain access; same for second night. No breakfast was available on either day.
Excellent budget stay. I was the only person in an 8-bed dorm, and was one of only two people using the communal facilities on the night of my visit. Excellent hostel facilities and good systems in place.
I was only there a night but used kitchen facilities shower etc all seemed clean and working. I really feel the cold so delighted to find heater in my room if I needed it. Denise was welcoming when I arrived and checked in the next morning with everyone in dining room to check things ok .
Efficient check in process. We had a lovely big room. Good showers. Town centre location. Supermarket opposite the hostel and lots of places to get food. Good bike storage facilities. We really enjoyed our stay here. Thank you
Last minute change of plan from camping due to the weather, myself and the family were highly supprised. It was a lovely place to say and Debbie was great.
Great hostel- very friendly helpful staff. It suited us as a family very well, we stayed for 3 nights in August. The large communal room was great, with room to play board games (provided or our own). The hostel was very popular with walkers, it would also be great for youth/ kids' groups. We would choose this hostel again.
This is a very large, functional ex-chapel, situated perfectly for fast food or groceries, and lends itself very well to being a hostel. The kitchen is well equipped. It is tired in decor, but it’s more than comfortable, and its price adequately reflects this. It even has its own drying room for the wet days. Very friendly and helpful duty staff member.

Kirby Stephen Hostel
Return to a hostel we went to after first being converted from a chapel, and was then part of the YHA. Showing its age a bit now, but still an enjoyable stay.
When I arrived at 8:15pm there was a note saying I should call a mobile number. I rang 5 times over a two hour period and left voicemails but I didn't get a text with the door code until after 10pm. I had to sit outside in the dark and entertain myself in this time. Phone signal isn't a problem in Kirkby Stephen, I had full 4G signal so this was totally inexcusable and it wasn't even like I arrived especially late. This was the worst service I've ever had at a hostel and I've stayed in lots.
If you get allowed inside it's quite nice. It's an old church which is interesting. Shame about the terrible service.

Great location, great value!
A great place to stay if your on a budget. Denise the owner couldn't be more helpful, she even sorted us a safe place to park our motorbikes overnight. I will certainly stay again in the future.
