Live In a Traditional Irish Pub

At Herlihy’s, there is an opportunity to play “mine host” in your own pub.

Yes! You will live quite literally in the pub. Herlihy’s Bar ceased trading as a licensed premises in 2017.

Since then the bar and ancillary areas have been re-commissioned into wheelchair friendly self-catering accommodation.

The bar counter is now home to a bespoke fitted kitchen, featuring all “mod cons”, the bar back remains in situ and the bar floor area has been transformed into living/dining space complete with up-cycled bar furniture and a sofa bed. In contrast to the traditional bar ambience, the remainder of the unit is ultramodern and encompasses a double bedroom, bathroom, complete with wet area and utility room. A private wheelchair accessible entrance leads into a hallway and a patio-door gives direct access from the bedroom to a beautiful garden (where one can barbecue weather permitting!), terrace and car park.

There is a lovely atmospheric ambience to the accommodation, making it perfect as a cosy welcoming venue for a totally relaxing break. It is the perfect location for a Kerry holiday just 1.5 km from Kerry Airport and 15 km from Killarney town centre. Plus a first rate taxi service. Being in the village, there is a supermarket, pharmacy, post office, takeaway and bar/restaurant on the doorstep.

Proprietor, Marie (whose family have owned the property since 1912) is a professional archaeologist, with a deep love of Ireland's rich and varied culture and heritage. She was the recipient of the 2015 Kerry Heritage Award. Marie is editor of The Kerry Magazine and current president of the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society. Marie continues to live in the building and is happy to engage with guests and offer advice on what to see and do in the Kerry. She has a family of two cats, who can be guaranteed to socialise with her guests should the opportunity arise.

The magnificent Irish coastline of West Kerry, the Wild Atlasntic Way and Dingle are accessible by car in 30 minutes. Farranfore is also the ideal point of departure for a trip around the Ring of Kerry. The Counties many golf courses (Killarney, Killorglin, Dooks, Barrow, Castleisland and Ballybunnion) are easily accessible from Farranfore. For those just wanting to get away from it all, there are some lovely rural roads to be explored in the vicinity of the village. Herlihy's Half Way House, provides the ideal base for those wishing to experience the natural beauty of Killarney, with its spectacular mountain and lake scenery. The town itself is picturesque and offers an exhaustive selection of bars, hotels, restaurants and shopping experiences. Tralee the County Town is world renowned as home to the Rose of Tralee International Festival. It is also home to our national Folk Theatre, Siamsa Tíre. The town also boasts an aquadome and wetlands. Kerry's County Museum is to be found in Tralee town centre. Whilst on the outskirts of the town is Manor Shopping Centre. Castleisland a traditional Irish market town and Killorglin (home to Puck Fair) are both just down the road from Farrranfore.

The best hub to see the glory of Kerry
Herlihy’s Halfway House is the perfect little place for all your adventures in County Kerry. Host Marie’s delightful former family pub is a fantastic setting to come back to after a visit to Tralee, Killarney or a trip around the spectacular Ring of Kerry. Marie is simply the best host, making us so welcome, and her knowledge of the local community, culture and best spots is remarkable. We’ve loved our visit and will be back soon.

We loved being able to stay in an old pub and so neat to see all the history of our host’s family. Very comfortable and great location to see many things. How often do you get a pub all to yourself?!

Loved it!
We had originally only planned 2 days at this location, but it has such a convenient location to explore the SW part of Ireland by car, we ended coming back and booking for 3 more days! Marie is wonderful hostess! She was a great source of information about the area and her beautiful country.

Great base from which to explore SW Ireland!
It was first fun to stay in a place that was once a pub! Beautifully decorated and very well situated. We rented a car and we found it to be very nicely located to explore and have a place to return each evening. Marie was a delight and patient as we learned about plumbing fixtures functions we had not been familiar with. We had a lovely kitchen to cook our breakfast and with a store right across the street, it was quite convenient. There was parking off the road. Marie also let us know the train was within walking distance if we chose not to drive. Thank you again Marie!

Relaxing in a pub
Marie was an amazing host. She provided daily assistance with sightseeing adventures. She is a wealth of knowledge! The house was extremely comfortable and close to all the necessities with a grocery store across the street and a pub and kebab place a few houses down. We ended up staying a couple days longer because we had such a great time!

Unique lodging
Cute and quirky former pub is now a great apartment. Beautifully decorated bedroom with great closet and drawers to store clothes. The apartment is spacious and clean with basic kitchen supplies to make a meal. There is a small grocery store directly across the street and the train station is just a couple of blocks away. The host, Marie, is on site and is very welcoming and helpful.

So Irish
We loved the idea of staying in a pub while visiting Ireland and this lived up to our expectations. Marie couldn't be a better hostess. The apartment was extremely clean and there is plenty to do in the area without being in the center of Killarney.

Charming 'Pub' Stay
Marie really had a vision for this place and it paid off -- she transformed a former family-owned pub into an inviting apartment. The place was spotless and even had a beautiful garden/patio area. The town on Farranfore doesn't have a lot to offer but it was centrally located for daily road trips, which is why we chose it. Marie's place is in the center of this busy hub (roads on 2 sides of the property) so it was a bit loud during the day but we were out anyway so it didn't matter much. Everything quieted down at night. Marie was really the star of this whole show. She is a delight and was so informative about where to go and ideas of things to do. She sent us to a delicious restaurant with spectacular views (Brasserie at the Europe) and it made for a very memorable evening. She also came to our assistance in a time of crisis -- we 'lost' one of our passports which showed up under the bed at the pub and she was nice enough to mail it to us and avert at least part of the disaster that ensued when we began canceling the next leg of our vacation. Thank you, Marie!! Herlihy's kicked off our first 5 days in Ireland with a happy bang!

Loved living in a Pub!
What an amazing experience living in a Pub for a week! The location is perfect to use as a base for much of Southwest Ireland - and has a magic Centra shop just across the road for everything you might need. But the real gem is Marie our host - so helpful and informative and a phenomenal conversationalist - gave us great tips and went out of her way to make our stay memorable and worry-free.

Cheers
Staying in a former pub was really something special! Marie is a great and friendly host, reacting very fast on WhatsApp questions, having good tipps as well, good internet. Close to Dingle and RingOfKerry and a store direcly across the street. The street and the craws where a bit loud and the bed a little small - everything else was fine. Unfortunately there is no nice pub in walking distance for food and a beer.

Also - unbedingt empfehlenswert!
