The village of Bowmore is an excellent central base for visiting the wonderful and unique Isle of Islay, and is almost equidistant from the two ferry ports of Port Ellen and Port Askaig, both around 10 miles’ drive. Bowmore has a charming, small village character, with plenty of amenities and a good variety of shops, restaurants, banks, Post Office and a swimming pool with fitness centre. It sits on the shore of beautiful Loch Indaal, where you can watch the wildlife on the sandflats at the head of the loch. Bowmore was Scotland’s first planned village where the streets are laid out on a grid pattern.
There are many small villages within a short driving distance, with Port Ellen being the principal fishing port and ferry terminal on the island with shopping facilities, restaurants, Post Office and pontoons available for yachts. The world famous, challenging golf links at Machrie are about 5 miles away, nestled alongside 7 miles of pristine beach. At the ferry port of Port Askaig, you can catch a ferry to the Isle of Jura, which also has a world class reputation for whisky and beautiful scenery.
Islay is the southernmost island of the Inner Hebrides of Scotland where you’ll receive the warmest of island welcomes. Known as ’The Queen of the Hebrides’, it sits in the mild, gulf-stream warmed Atlantic, and can be easily accessed by ferry from Kennacraig in Kintyre or from Oban. The island is quite large and has mass appeal as it is a paradise for birdwatchers, ramblers, fishermen, golfers, artists and lovers of fine food. There are nine working whisky distilleries, stunning scenery, amazing wildlife, silver sand beaches, high sea cliffs, heather-clad hills and big, open skies, plus more besides! Islay offers a range of walks from easy family routes to more challenging hill climbs. The relatively flat landscape of Islay lends itself to exploring by bike and is an excellent place for all the family to cycle. Ideal for birdwatching, there are two large RSPB reserves where you may be lucky enough to see or hear corncrake, chough and golden eagles.
