Escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and make our 4 bedroom, 2-bath cottage your home away from home in any season. Located on the shores of picturesque, tranquil Lake Kamaniskeg in the municipality of Hastings Highlands in the Madawaska Valley, our comfortable, family-oriented cottage is close to the town of Barry’s Bay, 3.5 hours from Toronto, 2 from Ottawa.
The property enjoys beautiful sunrises and views over the lake and is surrounded by forest. Lake Kamaniskeg has 90 km of natural beauty and is perfect for summer boating, swimming, fishing (lake trout, pickerel, small mouth bass and northern pike), kayaking, paddle boarding, canoeing and other water sports. Nature enthusiasts can enjoy walking, birdwatching or hiking to breathtaking lookouts and nearby, there are mountain biking, cross country skiing and OHSC snowmobiling trails.
In winter, enjoy moonlit walks on the frozen lake with the smell of wood smoke in the air and a canopy of stars glittering overhead. Go ice fishing or create a rink on the lake for family skating or hockey fun.
The Madawaska Kanu Centre (www.mkc.ca) is a 5 minute drive where you can whitewater kayak and canoe and public golfing is available at the 18 hole Homestead at Wolf Ridge (21 km) or Whitetail golf clubs (45 km). Algonquin Park’s East Gate is only 60 km where you can take a day trip and enjoy the Algonquin Logging Museum, several lakes from canoe access points or the Leaf Lake ski trail. You can also visit Wilno with its Polish Kashubian Heritage Museum and historic Wilno Tavern and Maynooth, Bancroft and Pembroke – with galleries, antique shops, eateries and more – are all less than an hour’s drive.
The cottage has an open plan kitchen with island, dining and living area with a fieldstone wood-burning fireplace and a 42 inch satellite television on the main level plus a large walkout deck overlooking the lake. Each floor has a full bathroom with shower. There are 4 spacious bedrooms accommodating 8 people: 2 queens, 1 king and 1 bunk bed. All have ceiling fans and two have TVs. Sheets, pillows and blankets are provided - bring your own personal/beach towels.
The fully equipped kitchen includes a convection stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, kettle, toaster, blender, slow cooker, Instant pot, roasting pan, dishes, pots and utensils, as well as baking dishes, hand mixer and spice rack. The kitchen/dining table seats 6 plus there are 3 seats at the kitchen island. Basic soaps and cleaning supplies are provided.
Outside on the wraparound deck, there is a BBQ, table and chairs for 6 and 4 Adirondack style patio chairs. There is also a picnic table near the deck and a lakeside fire pit for roasting marshmallows and star gazing. The lake has a flat gradual entry with a sandy bottom for easy access and safe, child friendly swimming.
Other amenities: ample parking, firewood, baseboard heating, internet, Wi-Fi, hair dryer, washer/dryer, iron and board, cable televisions(3), puzzles and board games, life jackets, canoe (1), kayaks (2), water toys, lakeside lounge furniture and space for one boat at the dock – there are boat launches in Barry’s Bay and Combermere and at Hinterland Beach which also has a beautiful, sandy public beach.
The cottage is a 10 minute drive from Barry’s Bay which has numerous amenities: hospital, Metro and Valu-mart grocery stores, pharmacy, Dollar Store, Home Hardware, bank/credit union (2), post office, gas stations (3), restaurants, Dairy Freeze & Grill, Tim Horton’s and other coffee shops, hair salons, pet shops, veterinarian clinic, the unique Grumbling Grannies, Mad Outdoors, Stedmans and other stores.
Between May 24th and Thanksgiving, there are 2 farmer/artisan markets: one in Barry’s Bay on Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the other on Saturdays in nearby Combermere, from 8 a.m. to noon. Both offer fruits, vegetables, meat, crafts, flowers, baked goods and homemade take home food. You can also access Combermere by water and dock across from the General Store where you can buy Kawartha ice cream or eat at the Bent Anchor which also has a dock for boats.
