Excellent location- uncomfortable beds.
The hotel had an excellent location and it was very charming from the outside as well as in the lobby. The room had a very uncomfortable bed and on the "feature wall", the paint was stripped away and was damp leaving some wet drywall exposed. I touched it to see if it was painted that way and it crumbled on my fingers. There was no A/C and no fan in the room, and as it was very humid both inside and outside that night, I didn't sleep very well! Breakfast was nice- smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on toast was great!

Great location. Nice hotel. Poor staff
Hotel seemed nice. Room could do with updating. Staff weren't great. Not bad but just not particularly good. Location was fantastic.

Dreadful room location
If you are given room 223, be warned. On a hot night where there is no aircon, the windows need to stay open. Just a few feet away is a huge kitchen air extractor which is extremely loud. It goes off around 11.30pm and comes back on at 6.30am. It is impossible to sleep while it's on. The room was only £69, but it should have been £6.90.

POOR FACILITIES - GOOD LOCATION
Hotel tried to over-charge £70 on arrival and on departure charged for drinks we had not had. Rooms have poor sound insulation so disturbed by being able to hear every word of people in next room, and by staff in room above ours finishing shift at 3 am. Rooms have no desk or table or facility for using a laptop. Only chairs in rooms are uncomfortable dining chairs. Only communal places to meet with other guests are a noisy pub (part of hotel) or three sofas on a landing outside bedrooms. There is a lounge which is usually locked or hired out for functions.

Great location, scruffy room
Good looking hotel in great location. reception staff v. good. However, we booked a twin room and were given room 324, 3rd floor at back. Room was small, dingy decor, wonky lamps, facing (10 ft) back window of another building, small TV, no wi-fi, mould above window in bathroom, no shelf at all in bathroom, broken toilet roll holder, extractor fan did not work, light above mirror did not work.Top covers on bed stained. Moved to another room 2nd night, hotel full first night, this room, 324, not fit for visitors.

A pretty colour is not quality.
Have stayed in hundreds of hotels around the world. This hotel is the sort I try to avoid! You pay for the Farrow & Ball wall paint, not for quality. Minuscule bedroom with mattress only 10cm thick and hard as a rock. Pillows were as cheap as chips disguised in decent linen. Wall to next room was un insulated dry-board and I could hear the quests' next door snoring let alone every word they said while they were awake. The bathroom hadn't been updated for a VERY long time and there was paint peeling of the walls. And for £140.00 per night I got a room with a view - of a brick wall only a couple of yards away. £5 extra for parking. It did seem clean though. If the price was much less it would be worth it for some, although I can't sleep on such cheap beds. Will not be staying there again.

Excellent food.
I always choose this hotel when in Harrogate. It has everything I need, and is close to the town centre without being noisy. The hotel overlooks a green, so you are really lucky if you get one of the rooms at the front! My room was a standard room, which was a little on the small side, but very clean and comfortable. The staff were all helpful and friendly, without exception. And the food is great, from breakfast, ( I can recommend the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs!) to dinner in the restaurant. A bit pricey, but well worth it.

Room size disappointing
Our room was quite small and the furniture old and marked. The room was at the rear of the hotel so there was no view. Hotel location is very good, right in the heart of the town. Service was good, and reception very helpful. The restaurant provides an excellent breakfast and the adjoining bar provides a good selection of real ales.Would recommend Luigis italian restaurant round the corner.

Disappointing
We found the reception and restaurant staff efficient, polite and charming but all were let down by the dreadful kitchen staff. There is not one good word to say about the quality, cooking or presentation of the meals. Service from the kitchen was slow, many things on the menu was not available. Even basic ingredients as cauliflower had been removed. There were two fish on offer - the sea bass was taken off which left the lemon sole which was so badly cooked had to be returned twice after which I decided to give up and go without a main course. I had read bad reports about the restaurant before we arrived but one always hopes it won't happen to you, but.........!
