La Bohème RETREAT - UNPLUG, UNWIND & UPLIFT your spirits!

NO WIFI or TV. For those seeking to truly rest, relax, rejuvenate and contemplate their journey on earth. Our retreat space speaks to the more adventurous traveler and is especially popular with younger folks who wish to step back in time for an authentic, retro-60's, boho experience. Please thoroughly read description to determine if La Bohème studio is a good fit for you. Not suitable for children or those seeking luxury accommodation.

Creative objets d'art and romantic lighting creates a very cozy, dark atmosphere (a petite solarium off the living room brings some natural light.) Two walls are covered in vintage, sculpted carpeting. Charming outdoor covered deck and garden areas allow for dining al fresco.

Steps away from the working waterfront and ideally situated in the heart of E. Gloucester between two beautiful beaches (Good Harbor and Niles). Walking distance to downtown 20 min, waterfront restaurants, Rocky Neck Art Colony, North Shore Art Assoc. and Gloucester Stage Co. Close to train (1 mile). Right in the middle of all the action while quiet and privately tucked away.

LIVING ROOM - Couch, oversized-chair, lots of books. 2 fans keep the studio nicely cooled. No TV or WIFI.

SLEEPING AREA is located at back of living room in secluded corner with a full-size (double) bed and comfy memory foam mattress.

PETITE SOLARIUM - Small room off living room with twin bed. Strong morning light from slanted roof with large glass-like ceiling (for early risers).

KITCHEN - Small, fully equipped with coffeemaker, gas range, fridge, toaster, washer/dryer and seating for 2.

UNIQUE BATH - European flair bathroom boasts a large, old-fashioned claw-foot tub with a hand-held shower and skylight above tub (NO STAND-UP SHOWER, must sit in tub and use hand-held).

OUTDOOR COVERED DECK for dining al fresco. Seating for 2.
PRIVATE GARDEN - Lovely shaded garden with wrought iron patio set.
OWNER/HOST - Richard Emmanuel lives on the property and is available at all times.

Cute and quaint!
This is a very unique space. I brought my teenage daughter and mother here to try something different and be close to Salem for Halloween. The location was great, close to Salem and Beverly which we visited as well. The property does not have WiFi but it did disclose that before we rented. It does have a TV which we used for streaming. The large bed was comfortable but the daybed in the window room was very hard and not a comfortable sleep. The kitchen had everything we needed but the bathroom was very tidy by and the tub was very difficult for my elderly mother to get in and out. However, this would be a very lovely getaway property fora couple looking for a quiet space away from home. I will definitely recommend just not for elderly people! Lol

Refreshing and felt like home
My boyfriend and I stayed here over this past labor day weekend and really enjoyed ourselves. The other properties we had looked at in Gloucester/Cape Ann seemed too sterile to be able to make any lasting memories in, whereas this stay was rich with character. I could easily go my life forgetting what the other places had looked like but will never forget the feeling of this studio. It was incredibly easy to romanticize everything you’re doing in this space and that was a lot of fun. The bathtub was a discussion to be had for us about our levels of comfort, but we ended up embracing it all the same, and having a great time doing so. You can tell there’s a lot of personal histories in this property and I really loved that we got to add it as a place in our own relationship’s history. If you like a place with a bit of quirk and moody character, I highly recommend staying here.

Serious Issues
*Do Not recommend *Would Not book again. We booked the 6th-10th of Aug, 2024. We arrived Aug 6th. My daughter immediately suffered an injury on site. I drove her to the ER. I called Richard (host) at the time, and VRBO when we returned from the ER. We left the premises the following morning, August 7th. Linda (co-host) asked me to cancel the active booking so she wouldn’t be penalized for canceling and so she could rent the space for those dates. VRBO said they had to cancel; it was not possible from my end. Richard wanted to send a refund check. A refund was posted to my account later. But, I did have to book 2 other properties to replace this one and pay for them before the refund hit, using my vacay funds. It was a nightmare. That’s not all: the property is not well maintained. The main bedside table is cracked in half. The refrigerator spills water onto the kitchen floor. It wet my socks. All the windows remain open and unlocked because there is no AC, fans have to circulate the air. (Safe?) If it’s muggy outside, it’s muggy inside. Kitchen window does not have a screen so mosquitos got in (Safe?) The threshold between the 2nd bedroom and living room has a space in the floor large enough to fit your foot (Safe?) Parking spot is at the base of an uphill driveway off the street - you must back into traffic or into the space. The accident resulted from mossy steps. *My daughter got a concussion.* Richard blamed her Doc Martens. Richard sanded the steps after the fall.

We stayed here to see Boston and Salem for Halloween/ a delayed honeymoon trip. The property was beautiful and the host was very kind and accommodating! We loved the welcome packet with local recommendations and information about the host and his very interesting work with The Church. Highly recommend staying here!

As described
The description was definitely accurate...except for the step up to the toilet & tub. We arrived at night so it was quite hard to figure out where to park, however it was well lit up to the door. Our overall experience was a pleasant one and we loved the bohemian flair!

Great adventure
This location was perfect for a base camp to explore New England. We left early each day , visited Salem, Brattleboro, Rockport, Portsmouth, and Portland. Then returned each evening to engage in the most amazing discussions with host Rev. Richard Emmanual. If you do not take the time to meet him , you are truely missing out. Enjoy life's walkabout.

Short, sweet, pleasant stay
What a splendid spot! Very quirky little place approximately equidistant from downtown and beaches. We slept well, loved looking at the various bits of art scattered around the place, and enjoyed the actual drip coffeemaker! (Death to all Keurig machines!) Thanks for a great stay.

Nice studio
Check-in was a little bumpy but we got everything figured out. The space itself is in an easy location and quite convenient if you're visiting Salem, gives you a chance to get away from the madness. It was pretty quiet besides the main road out front could be a bit noisy but nothing that bad and the neighbor next door is quite talkative lol the place was cozy, lots of detail and unique art. I do think it needs a good dusting (the fan, and knick knacks were pretty dusty)but everything else like surfaces, bedding and carpets were good and clean. It got a bit stuffy at night, heat wise but we just opened the door and turned on the fan. I think a little bit softer, comfortable bedding, a good dusting and a little better communication on checking in would make this a 5 star property. We enjoyed our stay and would def stay again.

Quaint, Eclectic, and Perfect!
You can't go wrong when choosing this location. It was clean and in a great location. The furnishings and décor were beautiful and unique. The tub with handheld shower took some getting used to, but it was a nice change and only added to the experience of the house. The notes left by the owner and cleaning staff were nice and made for a smooth check-in and checkout. Communication with Richard was great (we were running late on arrival). We especially enjoyed the list of activities and eateries that was provided. Overall, I would recommend this location to everyone visiting Essex County because it's close to so many things (beaches, regional attractions, Salem, etc.) and adds variety to your adventure in the area.

A quirky place with someOssues
The place is filled with unusual decor that appeals to some. There were several issues: 1) a musty smell that could not be mitigated because most windows did.not open; a bathroom on two levels withal shower fixtute only suitable for sponge baths, and 3) very weak internet service

Richard & Linda were very kind, accommodating & informative. We enjoyed our visits with Richard. He met us upon arrival & bid us farewell at departure and even lit a candle for us. We were there during an early heat wave, and the fans really helped! We loved the outdoor spaces. Thank you for your gracious hospitality!

Great Getaway!
What an inspirational living space! So many things to look at. The space is efficient and cozy. Ice in the fridge ready to go. Great list of local recommendations. Kitchen was well equipped and allowed us to prepare a few meals and snacks. The space can heat up in hot weather, but there are fans and many windows. The bed is wonderfully squishy, but some may prefer more lumbar support.

Cozy retreat
This was perfect for our summer beach / writing retreat! It did get pretty stuffy inside at times, as the weekend was exceptionally warm. But we spent a lot of time outdoors, using the front porch table and such. The deep bathtub was also a treat! Warning that the WiFi is indeed spotty, so if you’re doing something that really requires it, something else might be better. But in general, his place is great to unplug and unwind. Thanks again!

Homey & Comfortable
This place is truly a retreat! Very quiet and peaceful. It is billed as a studio, however, has a sitting room, bathroom, bedroom area and kitchen. The porch is a nice place to sit and take in the cool fresh air. Just an all-around nice place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of city life. Just wish I could have stayed longer!
