The McCarty House - Mid Century Modern Gem!

Rarely is a home of historic architectural significance available for use as a vacation rental in most any destination, and that is particularly true in Gatlinburg and Pittman Center. Designed by Bruce McCarty, well known for many public and private buildings in Knoxville, Tennessee, this gem of a home displays his passion for integrating modern design with natural landscape. Using local materials, the home appears to be sculpted from the site using stone, wood and glass.

This is a space of peace, tranquility and timeless beauty that captures the mid-century modern esthetic in an organic, livable form!

✨ PROPERTY HIGHLIGHTS ✨
Built over 60 years ago, it exudes this era of design with unique charm and personality. The home has been thoughtfully restored through an extensive renovation that carefully integrates modern updates while respecting the architect's vision.

The kitchen is equipped with extremely high standards including everything you need for cooking and entertaining. New ceramic dishes, beautiful glassware, and high-end small appliances, like a standard coffee maker, are housed within the expertly restored original cabinets. Modern lighting has been added, as well as honed granite counter tops. New cork flooring and large appliances finish it off. The newly added kitchen bar is crafted from repurposed chestnut lumber salvaged from Knoxville's oldest standing home.

A two-person walk-in tile shower has been added in the thoroughly updated lower bath. Its design is inspired by the Great Smoky Mountains woodland oasis known as "Midnight Hole,” named for its deep blue-green water.

We’ve added a covered stone patio out front for lounging and as a stylish platform for the new 4-person hot tub spa. The cozy den furnishings paired with a high definition 65" TV make a perfect place to watch sporting events and movies with family and friends. High speed internet allows easy streaming of your favorite shows. The original handcrafted wood-burning fireplace proudly anchors the living room, which has been furnished for comfortable group gatherings.
Upstairs you'll find two bedrooms, a full bath, and sleeping loft. Each bedroom has a private balcony with rocking chairs, dresser, closet, cloud-like bamboo memory foam king mattresses, and as in the rest of the home, they're furnished with period or reproduction MCM pieces. The loft is appointed with a twin sized day bed, desk, dresser, and closet. It's perfect for remote working or for an extra sleeping space.

The McCarty House was originally designed by Bruce McCarty for his mother, Mrs. E.H. McCarty, as their family summer home. It is still used for that purpose today by our family. We love and enjoy it as our cherished retreat. It is our honor to share it with you! Guests will have unlimited access to the host before, during, and after their stay.

Each guest will have full access to the entire property

I plan to interact with the guests to ensure they have a five star stay!

The location is arguably the best in Gatlinburg. It's in the heart of the Arts & Crafts district and close to quaint dining and authentic art galleries. It's only 1 mile to the Great Smoky Mountain Greenbrier Cove entrance, known for the epic wildflowers of Porter's Creek trail, magnificent Ramsey Cascades waterfall, and the majestic Middle Prong of the Little Pigeon River.

Gorgeous Cabin!
This place was gorgeous! I felt like I was staying in a mid-century treehouse. The back of the cabin is all floor to ceiling windows. A great option if you are looking to visit Gatlinburg while also staying in a stylish place!

Fantastic, secluded and charmingly retro.
I love this cabin! My fiance and I were married along the Roaring Forks river during our stay and this was the perfect cabin for the occasion. The huge windows and natural stone was amazing. And it has the coziest feel. The area was perfect, it's set right in the middle of everything but still feels as if you're on a secluded mountain. We visited Agnes Appalachian Gems at the end of the driveway and got coffee and treats at the Painted Bear coffee shop almost day that was just a mile down the Rd. And definitely recommend eating at the Peddler as recommended in the cabins welcoming book.

Incredible cabin, great location
My wife and I spent our honeymoon hiking the Great Smoky Mountains NP and were thrilled to find such an architecturally interesting spot in the area. The cabin is a unique treasure and maintained and furnished with love (and good taste). On top of that, the space is clean, comfortable and feels private despite being in fairly close proximity to all the action in DT Gatlinburg. We both agree this is probably the coolest rental we've ever stayed at (and we've been to many!).

Everything about the McCarty house is idyllic. Natural wood, marble, and stone fill the interior making this house feel like a true home. I would recommend this property to family and friends. The location is perfect to the National Park and far enough away from the noise of Gatlinburg, but also convenient if that’s what’s you’re in to. Will be back in the warmer months! The fireplace really set the mood for our stay, we enjoyed it throughly. This is a true mountain escape, architect of this home sure knew exactly what he was doing when he designed this home. I am so impressed!

Natural setting
We loved this home in its natural setting not far from good hiking. We loved the hot tub and the family room for board games. The master bed mattress may need replaced soon. Take a picnic to Chimneys Picnic area- just beautiful! The easy Cosby Nature Trail was fun, not crowded and absolutely gorgeous even on a rainy day. For a moderate hike, we loved Porters Creek- away from the crowds.

Beautiful and Unique Home
This home is graced with stone and wood throughout with a beautiful wall of glass surrounded by forest. It was so peaceful with the wood burning fireplace and secluded nature view. It is just as the photos shown. I loved the uniqueness and beauty of it. Upscale architecture. Mid century modern. I recommend to those who are seeking a different experience away from the typical "bear" motif cabin.

Never again, do not recommend.
There are cobwebs everywhere inside, large spiders as well. Literally worms inside throughout. However, our first night we pulled out a baking pan (the only one there) for dinner and it had a rat glue trap stuck to it. The manager just blew off my concern. We have a timeshare in Gatlinburg, we rent cabins often, and we have never experienced something like this. Yes, it’s nature, but most hire professionals to exterminate routinely. The amount of money paid for this type of stay was ridiculous.

A True Cabin in the Woods!
We stayed here becuase of the unique description of the home and its history. The pictures look just like the home. We are not accustomed to living in the woods but it was a great experince for my family. It is important to know there is a steep winding driveway to get to the top where the home is. The home had floor to ceiling windows and was really pretty duing the day. At night the home is very dark. The home owner has attempted to brighten up the home with lamps and such but it is still dark in the bedrooms and bathrooms. There are 2 bedrooms with doors and a bedroom in the hallway with pull-to privacy screen. Plenty of towels. Plenty of blankets. Plenty of space to lounge inside and out. 1 large TV in the home. Great double shower head downstairs The outlets to charge your devices are not convenient... so bring extra long cords. The home is in the woods and naturally had quite a few cobwebs throughout the entire home. Nicely remodeled cabin!

Mice and Spiders Oh My!
Well, we so wanted to love this home especially since it was our Honeymoon. But there were way to many cons, unless you like spending time in a dungeon with spiders, mice and mice droppings! The upstairs water pressure was bad and the commode was loose and leaking. There were no curtains or blinds in the home, but the worst was the ground level bathroom and yes there are neighbors in the vicinity! There is no privacy or protection from animals (bears) while trying to relax in the hot tub which is off the driveway as you’re walking into the house. I stood guard so at least one of us could sit a spell in the hot tub. Also all of the area rugs are tripping hazards, they are wrinkled and loose. We contacted the owner the next morning, never heard anything back, we decided to find other lodging for the next 2 nights. It was already late morning and our wedding was at 6pm. Luckily we found the last room at the Margaritaville Inn. They let us check in early so we could get ready for our wedding. I text to leave a message about the situation and finally he called and said he would send someone out to see it. We ask for at least a refund for the 2 nights we didn’t stay due to the unsanitary conditions, it’s been 2 weeks and we’ve only heard from him saying “I’m waiting on the owners to respond”……we thought we was the owner? I have contacted him at least 2 times before writing this review hoping at least I could add a positive note saying he was sorry and would make things right, hasn’t happened as of yet! Renter Beware.

Weekend getaway; great stay!
Secluded designer home, on a hill in the woods east of Gatlinburg. It was a cozy space, with enough room to spread out for a young family (even two small ones) or for a couple retreat. Very comfortable beds, a nice back deck, and small hot tub. Very clean and well furnished. Lots of natural light, but enough woods to keep the sun from streaming in too brightly. Bring an SUV or high clearance vehicle to get up the drive.

Seclusion and privacy just minutes from downtown Gatlinburg
We have stayed here three other times when it belonged to another owner. Always enjoyed the privacy and relative solitude but - still close to Gatlinburg. Now we like it even more so because of the many improvements and upgrades that have been made, while still preserving the character and charm of the property. The biggest improvement is paving that last steep hill up to the house! The hot tub is also a great addition. Will definitely be back for a future visit.
