Abigail's Cottage | Pet Friendly

This little 1950's cottage is charmingly tucked into the trees of this large city lot located only a block from Main Street. The front porch has one rocker and a swing to enjoy the crisp cool mornings.

This special home offers many comforts. Decorated with a wonderful exquisite flair Abigail's Cottage is both comfortable and elegant. Inside the living room has a comfy sofa and two chairs placed to enjoy the large cable television (DVD/VCR) or enjoy music from the stereo/CD player tucked into the armoire. There is also wifi (instructions are in the armoire). It is perfect for that welcoming retreat from a day of shopping and touring. Open to the living room is a wonderful kitchen completely equipped for cooking. There is a stove, microwave, large refrigerator, dishwasher, toaster and coffeemaker plus a table with four chairs.

Abigail's sleeps up to four people. The front bedroom is tastefully decorated with blue accents and a combination of white and coral walls and has a queen bed. The bedroom in the back of the house has an iron queen bed topped with a quilt adorned with green and natural colors. The bath, which is located in the small hall has a claw foot tub with an overhead shower.

The home is pet friendly and will accept up to four dogs. However, there is a pet fee of $11/dog/night. Perfect For What It Is
It needs improvement, but for us, it was ok. It was quaint and perfect for the two of us and our pet. The neighborhood was close to everything we needed. We could walk to main street but it was on the far end of the street and not at the center of town. That was still ok for us but some may want to be more centrally located. We knew this would be an older home as many are in the area, and the reviews about the tub are accurate. The parking was fine, and the check-in on Main Street was quick. You have to know that the decor and house are older when you go in. I prefer some imperfections over a hotel. The house had that older Fredricksberg character. We would stay there again but if you have more than 2 or three, get a place with more than one bathroom. Know that there is no access to washer and dryer. I assume that was behind the locked door at the end of the hall? We felt safe and slept well. I would suggest upgrading to a k cup coffee maker, but I appreciated that there was a new sealed container of coffee at the house. We did not use the hot tub, but it looked clean. The outside and yard could be taken care of more and the mattresses could use an upgrade or at least a topper. The house seemed clean but just dated and well used. It was priced lower than some, so we knew we would be okay with it.

Not bad
I emailed about a late check out with no response. You have to go to a business on a very busy street with no parking to pick up and drop off the keys. The house itself was not bad…except for the bathtub! Please renovate or replace the bathtub! Taking a shower was a horrible experience. The shower curtains attack you, water sprays everywhere around the outside tub, and getting in and out can be dangerous. Think of adding a last minute shower head to a claw tub that is raised off the ground on stilts…. It just doesn’t make sense. Pros: beds are comfy, plenty of pillows and linens, quiet and safe street, and H-E-B to get groceries was a very short drive. Cons: Check in and out process of getting the keys is a bit annoying, BATHTUB, driveway to get in and out is very skinny with no room to turn around (but I have a big vehicle), we found out the last day where the fan switch was for the front bedroom (it’s hidden behind the huge armoire), location is at the very end of Main Street so we really couldn’t walk to any of the places we wanted to go.

Grandma & Abby (granddaughter)Trip
Cottage was the perfect place for Grandma and teen granddaughter to hang out in Fredericksburg together. Everything was just as advertised. We loved being able to have easy access to everything in Fredericksburg for shopping, restaurants, etc. and out at Market Days. Easy access and had everything we could have wanted to spend a long weekend to share together and make lifelong memories. Great communications throughout the entire process.

So much potential
We had three adults staying. Me (57), sister (60) and Mother (79) for a birthday weekend for Mom. The cottage has so much potential. First, the place needs a good cleaning. The dust was visible on furniture, ceiling fans and floors. The carpet in the front bedroom needs to be cleaned. The light fixture in the kitchen had a layer of dust and even cobwebs on it. The ceiling fan in the front bedroom didn't operate, the floor around the tub is pretty dirty. There was a lot of general clutter. The hot tub didn't really have any privacy and the landscaping in the front is overgrown and messy. I don't know if you use a third party for housekeeping, but they might use some supervision. We also saw signs of mice. The items above the kitchen cabinets are dirty. Also, there was a ton of throw pillows in the back bedroom closet but not any extra blankets or throw blankets. There is a lamp in the living room with a cord stretched across the corner that could be a hazard if small children or pets stay, maybe add an extension cord. We loved the cottage don't get me wrong but see how it could be soooo much better. I'm not putting this on a public review because I feel these things should be shared in private.

Not as expected
The pictures were better than the actual house. The back door did not lock, the bath tub/shower was very difficult to manuver especially for older guests. TV did not work. This little Old house could be much better if it was safer and taken better care of. I think there might be a short in the back outside light, Won't be back. Location was good.

Good location
We enjoyed the location, but the bathing situation was not desirable. While a claw foot tub is cute, it doesn’t work well for a shower.

Filthy and Stained, DO NOT Stay Here
I was shocked to arrive and see all of the carpets stained and filthy - nasty stains EVERYWHERE. The bed was carelessly made, old comforter and decrepit bedding. Cords all over the home in the bedrooms strung about. Dust on every possible inch of the home. Bathroom is repulsive, there's a filthy toilet cover from about 1989 on the toilet lid and below it, another filthy toilet carpet that's stained from years of....well, you can imagine. The refrigerator top rack moves up and down as it's not secured by the proper shelving underneath. The back yard by the hot tub is filthy, covered in bird droppings and there's a bunch of refuse behind the home that represents a true hazard. The check in process is very antiquated. Must msg host in order to get directions (they responded 15 min late at 3:15, check in is at 3pm so that should have been sent earlier). You have to go to the property manager's (using this term loosely) office down the street and check out an old school key which you are expected to return the next morning. This is not an acceptable practice anymore - should be e-lock or lockbox. When I complained to the property manager about the condition of this home and how gross it was, she responded by saying, and I quote: 'we are not responsible for the wear on the property. But, I will be happy to relay the message to the owner. I'm sorry it does not meet your expectations.' I didn't stay there, I left and they denied me a refund. Sent pics of filthy home to VRBO.

Just okay, but good location
We have stayed at many vrbos in Fredericksburg as we have family in the area and visit frequently. This was our first time at Abigail's. At first glance, it is in a great location that is walkable to town, but there are a few things to be aware of. First, the TV is unwatchable on some stations due to static and fluctuations. It is also only cable and basic channels with no internet tv option. The bathtub/shower combo is a claw tub, that is quite quaint, but do take care getting in and out of the tub and know that if you are larger than 120 lbs, the shower curtains will be touching you on all sides. The hot tub is a nice tough, though, we did not use it. We had hoped to grill out dinners, but found a bird nest inside the grill with a dead bird that apparently was trapped inside. The beds are queen size and quite cozy, and they do squeak quite a bit when getting in/out. Ultimately, it's a quaint very-Fredericksburg cottage, but we will not be staying again. I think the property managers could take a bit more care and vastly improve it.

Good property, could be great
There’s a lot of potential for this property but i feel like it may not be properly taken care of. Cute house with an amazing location. However, there was tons of dust under all the furniture. Also there was no front porch swing or rocking chair like in the pictures. Pictures indicate a spa in the backyard, when we arrived it was not working and looked like someone had been working on it maybe? There was just some stuff left out. They need to replace it because it was definitely not usable and looked like it was never cleaned or cycled correctly. We loved that the property was pet friendly BUT we couldn’t walk our dog around the back yard at all because they had a tree that had shed a ton of very sharp needles/spurs. He ended up with his paws covered in spurs and we ended up with them all stuck in the bottom of our shoes. Would have at least liked a warning since it’s suppose to be pet friendly. If they cleaned up the backyard, replaced the hot tub, and cleaned the property better it would be a 10/10, but i don’t think in its current stay i’d stay again. Maybe they take better care of it in “on season”?

Dissapointing
Upon walking in the house everything looked great. We arrived after the sun had gone down. One thing we were looking forward to and one of the reasons for picking the house was because it had a hot tub. When we unpacked our car we wanted to make sure the hot tub was hot so we followed the directions that were given on how to operate it. Even though there were light strands on the pergola we couldn't find how to turn them on. We were left to use flashlights. We could not get the hot tub to work, well thank goodness we didn't get in that night. The next day we were eager to find out how to use the hot tub now that we had daylight. I opened the lid and was disgusted at what I saw. The mold was so thick that there is no way anyone has used that in a very long time. It was so gross. The night we arrived we also thought we would use the electrical fireplace and that didn't work either. Then I started noticing things around the house. For one the dust was think on most surfaces that my phone camera even got a great pic of it as well. Window sills were just as dusty. We were also told that it was walking distance to Main which I guess it was however not the part of Main you want to walk to. I have stayed in FBG plenty of times in VRBO's and this was the worst.
