About a holiday in Fowey...
Welcome to this ancient charming harbour town, located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Positioned on the western side of a deep estuary, where the Fowey River meets the sea, this town is a sailor's paradise. Yachts sail back and forth across the water while seagulls call overhead, creating a picturesque scene that will take your breath away.
As you walk through the narrow streets, you'll experience a vibrant maritime history. It's a friendly and lively atmosphere that's sure to leave you feeling energised and inspired. Independent shops selling unique gifts, art, clothing, and books compete with cafes and pubs for your attention. And if you're lucky, you might catch occasional glimpses of the river through small alleys.
Take a stroll along the Esplanade where Monkey Magic is located, passing the grand parade of Edwardian and Victorian houses, to the beach at Readymoney Cove overlooked by the medieval St Catherine’s Castle guarding the harbour entrance. On the other side of the water, we'll find the charming village of Polruan, which is believed to be much older than Fowey. Its medieval blockhouse once housed a chain that could be pulled up to prevent boats from entering the harbour.
Daphne du Maurier lived in the lovely seaside town of Fowey on the stunning south coast of Cornwall. She first resided in the charming Ferryside, located opposite the town at Bodinnick, before moving to the picturesque Menabilly. Menabilly was later immortalised as Manderley in the book 'Rebecca'.
When you visit Fowey, we highly recommend spending some time on the river. The easiest and most enjoyable way to do this is to take the passenger ferry across the harbour to Polruan. The ferry weaves in and out of boats of all shapes and sizes, making for a delightful experience. Pleasure boats depart regularly from the town quay steps for longer trips, taking you up the river on a guided tour. Large ships are loaded with the white powder mined not far above St Austell at the China clay docks, which are out of sight of most visitors.
If you're feeling adventurous, you can take a guided seafari, canoe, kayak or SUP trip on the water. This is such a great way to observe the plentiful river wildlife and wooded streams! It's a thrilling adventure, even for beginners. Let the tide carry you up the river, stopping at charming villages like Lerryn or Golant. Alternatively, continue to St Winnow, where a solitary church sits on the water's edge. On a very high tide, you may even reach Lostwithiel, Cornwall's ancient capital.
There are plenty of stunning walks. If you're looking for a fun day out, why not take the ferry across to Bodinnick and explore the Hall Walk? This scenic route meanders through the beautiful woodland above the river all the way to Polruan. And don't worry about getting back to Fowey - there's another ferry that will bring you back. If you have some extra time, consider taking a slight diversion to visit Lanteglos Church. It's a beautiful spot and has some historical significance - it's where Daphne du Maurier got married.
