While the managers property was comfortable and large enough for our extended family's holiday gathering, there were some major safety red flags during our stay that must be shared with potential guests. On the first evening of our stay, the power to the entire community went out and, while out of control of the hosts, the power outage led to unfortunate, yet preventable, huge issues during the remainder of our stay. While a generator was available to provide electricity in the case of a power outage, it only provided enough power for less than half the power needs of the house so we were without heat, more than half the outlets didn't work, and a non-working oven, stove, one of the refrigerators, and dishwasher. The host did come by twice and was unable to fix the power issue and didn't contact an electrician but required us to call and speak with their electrician who also couldn't find a reason for the generator power failure. A few nights into our stay, the one functioning carbon monoxide detector went off detecting CO in the home. After changing out the batteries of that unit and putting batteries into all other smoke and CO detectors in the home - as most other detectors either didn't have batteries, had dead batteries or were hard-wired and not working due to the power outage - two carbon monoxide detectors went off again and all of our family members had to immediately evacuate for the remainder of our stay for the health and safety of all. The fire department was notified and determined it was not a safe space to remain with the location of the generator in proximity to the home. After losing thousands of dollars because of our emergency evacuation, cutting the trip short and having to find other accommodations, having to dispose of bags and bags of spoiled food because it sat in an unpowered refrigerator overnight, and multiple trips from the Bay Area and Northern California to retrieve personal belongings the following day after the all-clear from the fire department, the hosts refused any refund until after we contacted VRBO and, even then, refused a full refund.
