Romantic Tropical Hideaway - Birds & Bees Cottage

Birds & Bees Cottage, as the name implies is a romantic stone cottage with shingle roof trimmed with white gingerbread. It has a king sized 4 poster bed draped in netting, antique furniture, a huge 30' x 8' verandah with a hammock for those afternoon naps. Lovely views across the tropical garden filled with an assortment of flowers and trees with many birds flitting through. There is a palm fringed pool shared with Sapodilla cottage also in the 2 acre garden. Both cottages are very private and peaceful and well separated from each other. I ask a minimum of 5 nights.

This is our 2nd time at Birds and Bees. I think my granddaughter said it all: "It's like we have our own private resort." The owners are the best.

The perfect stay
Everything about this property and the hosts were a delight. A beautiful haven amongst the natural world. Comfortable and tranquil with everything we needed. We loved being visited by the resident dogs, all with their own super characteristics. Janie and Geoffrey are such wonderful and interesting people and could not have been more helpful to us. Thank you for our stay.

A Natural Hideaway
A delightful blend of nature and comfort. Beautiful cottage (Birds n' Bees) with lots of gorgeous tropical flora... and plenty of fauna! The birds are all around, so if you don't like birds, this place is NOT for you! The hosts have fitted the cottage with modern conveniences, drinking water, fully equipped kitchen, and king-size netted bed. A bottle of Antigua Rum was waiting for us upon our arrival. We hated to leave!

Quiet and a piece of paradise
Our week at Birds and Bees was great. Between the birds and dogs we always had company while here. It's a charming place, close to English Harbor, but a taxi or car are needed for most excursions. Waking up to the sunrises were beautiful. The pool area is quiet and beautiful. We loved this place.

The Garden of Eden
By the end of the first day, we were already planning a return visit. After that, we just sat back, relaxed and let the natural beauty of the property and the surroundings wash over us. This really is a magical place. Janie and Geoffrey are wonderful hosts, and our daily doggie visits were a cherished part of our vacation routine. We will be back - soon and often.

Perfect romantic hideaway
A truly perfect piece of Eden, complete with tropical birds, a gorgeous vista, gentle breeze, cool pool, cool BBQ and genial hosts - authentic in every way. We couldn't wait to return to the cottage after idyllic days on pirate beaches to enjoy lazy evenings lounging on the terrace. This is a gem that we couldn't recommend highly enough. Thank you Janie and Geoffrey - we so hope to come back soon.

The Perfect Stay
The Birds & Bees Cottage offered the perfect stay on Antigua. The South is the best area of Antigua and this little cottage up on the hill from Falmouth Harbor offered a peaceful retreat and at the same time we were minutes from all of the best trails, sails, beaches, history, and restaurants on the island. Janie and Jeffery also were incredible hosts - offering insight to places and adventures and also keeping the grounds beautiful and exotic. We woke every morning to the sound of birds and ate our breakys with the company of songbirds and more!! We loved this place!!!

Welcoming and open
All the people we met on site were very welcoming and there was a very good welcome pack. The grounds and pool area are lovely The fact that the doors and windows were always open for the breeze it felt a little insecure leaving out valuables there when we went out and similarly at night as the gates never seem to be locked

Stunning and absolutely beautiful...
Staying in this small cottage in the most pristine gardens I have seen in Antigua was an absolute joy. The cottage provided everything I needed. Clean, orderly, great use of space and of course relaxing. Spending time here truly inspired me to be in nature even more than I already do. I felt so comfortable and at ease the whole time. So much gratitude for the warm welcome and lovely stay.

What Holidays should always be!
An enchanting environment, views to die and air conditioning supplied by the breeze. If you can drag yourself away from the refreshing pool all the facilities of Falmouth and English Harbours are nearby and many of the islands best beaches within 30 minutes drive. Not for 5 star 'all inclusives' but an authentic Caribbean experience with comfortable bedroom, adequate facilities and a living area opening onto a generous veranda where you can be fascinated by the antics of some very precocious birds.

Antigua as it should be.
No screens, no AC, no TV. Perfect host, view and best of all breeze. Just the simple pleasures. It’s close to English Harbor, Shirley Heights, horseback riding, restaurants, grocery store, liquor store, ice cream, hiking, beaches. Janie’s place is the antidote in this fast pace, immediate satisfaction world. Not for everyone but perfect for Mark and me. Thanx Janie

Careful what you wish for.
I would just like to point out that obvious-That ALL of the local wildlife will be sharing the space with you! This is includes lizards, birds, moths, spiders and mosquitoes. Please look up the fauna of Antigua! If this is your thing your stay will be amazing and you will want for nothing ie toiletries, cleaning/cooking products etc. If you're hiring a car then a 4x4 is a must!

Simply Heavenly !
My boyfriend and I needed a quiet private retreat for this holiday as we both have been working very hard. The birds and the bees cottage was so beautiful peaceful and perfect and exactly what we needed. It is very private, but if you need anything or if you like to have someone close by to help you feel safe, the owners are not far. It is in true Caribbean form an open cottage and windows that you can keep open all night while you're sleeping. We had such a lovely breeze every night to keep us cool. We stayed for two weeks and Janie was a lovely host and gave us great recommendations. I can't say enough about this island as well. Everyone on this island in our experience was so friendly. And there is so much to do on. We definitely were sad to leave and hope that one day we can come back again!

Paradise
We absolutely loved our stay at Janie and Geoffrey's. We stayed there for almost a week and were sad when it was time to leave. There's plenty to do and see nearby (we LOVED a little place called "Hummus Antigua". The kitchen at the cottage is also fully stocked and we cooked many meals there. There are friendly dogs on the property who will come visit if you open the door for them, which we loved. You will definitely want a car. Though the road is road to get up to the cottage, we had no issues navigating it with a compact car. I'm sure a SUV would work better, but we didn't find it necessary. Overall, the property is beautiful and Janie and Geoffrey were helpful and responsive. Also, they are COVID certified by the government, so there's no issues there.

Just what we wanted!
My husband and I were looking for a relaxing, romantic getaway to celebrate out 25th wedding anniversary. Birds and Bees was everything we hoped it would be and more. Serene, peaceful cottage with beautiful foliage and flowers and fantastic views. We rented a 4-wheel vehicle for the week (car rental a must at this location - use Titi as recommended by owner) so we could explore the island. Rendezvous Beach quite a bumpy and almost scary experience to drive (husband lived the off-roading) but well worth it. Secluded, beautiful beach with good snorkeling. The owners were on hand to answer questions and provide recommendations but very unobtrusive. Many attentions to detail including providing a cell phone for local calls, a cooler we packed lunches in for our excursions and even thick comfy robes. My only complaint is that we can't stay longer.

Birds & Bees Cottage is Heaven
This is our 3rd stay at Birds & Bees Cottage - 2 weeks each time, we have spent a total of a month and a half here and we love it more each time. Birds & Bees is special as it's an eco-home where you not only have a view of the harbor but also get to interact with all the best island nature including hummingbirds, a tortoise, a variety of other birds that will sing to you, beautiful lizards, horses, and 3 beautiful dogs. We love the cool breezes that come off the water right up and through to our bedroom and living space. We made the best meals in our galley kitchen with everything we need right there. Janie & Geoff were (and are always) so gracious and accommodating and will offer you every thing you need. When you arrive they have wonderful local fruits, juices, breads, coffee and even rum all there awaiting your arrival! But the best part for us is the beautiful pool with a gazebo where you can relax with a beverage, nap, swim short laps, commune with nature, or read a book all with the best view on the island!

Antigua relaxation
If you are looking for a relaxing vacation spot with awesome views, this is your spot. Very nice pool and gazebo - views from pool can't be beat! Cottage is also quite comfortable, and we had no issues. Hosts are very accommodating and friendly, there if you need something and not if you don't. We believe the English Harbour area is some of the nicest on Island. Many choices for eating out (Sweet Ts a favorite local) many spots in/near the harbor. And you can hike (drive if adventurous) to Rendezvous Bay (my favorite spot) and pretty much have it to yourself often. In regard to safety or wildlife in cottage, all doors, windows have heavy wooden shutters that can be closed and locked/deadbolted. We did at night for light and to mask the tree frog sound, otherwise open and let the breeze come thru. The dogs do a great job of protecting the place but also don't bother you if you don't want them around. We came in on Sat. and it was Weds afternoon before we realized we didn't have a T.V.!!! For that alone it's worth it . Great value, stay, experience.

Amazing week at Birds & Bees
Private and tranquil. Exactly as described and pictured. Janie is lovely! I arrived to a fridge full of breakfast items for the week and a bottle of rum. She was always making sure I didn’t need anything- but never intrusive. Her 50 year history in the community here is amazing to me. She made great recommendations and invited me on a trip in her boat to swim and snorkel. So fun! If you enjoy self catering, peaceful surroundings, like to explore- This is your place. Full kitchen- everything you need. There’s plenty of places near for dinner, even in off season- so you don’t have to cook. Fans and trade winds- no need for AC. I love sitting on the covered lanai every morning and evening watching the birds with the incredible view of the valley and harbour. A nice dip in the pool at the end of the day. If you are looking for a hotel, 24/7 AC, don’t like living open to nature, then a hotel may be a better option for you. If you’re easy going, want to experience Antigua like a local, have amazing views and rent from good people, this is your place.

An absolute delight!
We were fortunate enough to stay at Janie and Geoffrey's beautiful property for two weeks in February. The large cottage has everything you will need for a very comfortable stay. It is clean, very comfortable bed (king size), large verandah with comfortable sitting and dining areas, charmingly furnished, and private. The kitchen is well supplied and Janie leaves provisions for breakfasts and snacks. The Wifi works very well from the cottage, verandah, and pool area. The pool is a delight - beautifully surrounded by bougainvillea, palm trees and other indigenous plantings. The pool is also very private and shared only by one other couple whom you rarely see. The other smaller cottage (Sapodilla) is also well out of sight of 'Birds & Bees' so there is lots of privacy. Hummingbirds, bananaquits, turtle doves, and others entertain you on your verandah. Janie's three gentle dogs also pay you visits if you wish. If you have questions while there (or before you arrive) communication is great with Janie. All emails were returned very quickly. The road leading to 'Birds & Bees' is rough, however, we were encouraged to rent a vehicle which was a little higher off the road (a Toyota Rav 4) and with slow and careful driving had no issues. A rental car is essential to get into Falmouth and English Harbour (a short drive away). There is no air conditioning but it is not needed. A tall floor fan and an over-the-bed ceiling fan kept us very comfortable. The trade-winds coming in all windows and doors are lovely too. We so enjoyed our peaceful, tranquil visit to beautiful Antigua and hope to return soon. Thank you Janie and Geoffrey!!

The Very Best
Birds and Bees Cottage is the BEST place to stay in Antigua, hands down! This was our second time staying with Janie and Geoff, and we enjoyed it more than our first visit over two years ago. The cottage itself is roomy and romantic, set amidst abundant tropical flowers on a quiet hillside with a lovely view of Falmouth Harbor in the near distance. Every morning, loquacious birds visited us on the wonderful verandah and we shared our tropical fruit with them (and a few lizards as well). We love the openness of the cottage that is well cooled by the sea breezes wafting up from the harbor below. It’s well located close to English Harbor and all the amenities; and one of the best beaches on Antigua is a short 10-minute drive away. A dip in the pool is a fantastic treat at the end of a long day exploring, and its airy gazebo on a high vantage point has great views of the harbor and surrounding area. It’s so relaxing to get some shade, read or take a nap there. The grounds are lovely overall, and since our last stay, Janie and Geoff installed a beautiful pond on the property with blooming flowers. Janie and Geoff are long-time residents of Antigua and can advise on things to do, best beaches, provisions, and restaurants. On arrival, our kitchen was generously equipped with enough food and drink to ensure we could put off a trip to the grocery store until later – nice after travelling all day to get there. An added bonus for us were visits from the three lovable dogs, since we had to leave ours behind. This property is the quintessential airy and eco VRBO experience we love. Waking every morning to the beauty and simplicity of Birds & Bees, we thankfully forgot our media and other non-essential needs, which we gratefully left behind. The wi-fi works great in the house and at the pool so it’s easy to catch up on a tablet or phone. We were so sad to say goodbye but dream of the day when we can return again!

Magical Property!
This was our second time staying at Janie and Geoffrey's stunning property (April 2023). Please read my detailed review from last year (Feb. 2022, published on March 4, 2022). This time Janie accommodated our extended family of five adults and two young grandchildren. Just like a year ago everything was wonderful. We had both cottages, Birds 'N Bees and Sapodilla, as well as a spacious bedroom suite. Our favourite spot was the pool and gazebo area (for our sole use). It is surrounded by beautiful plants, flowers, and palm trees with stunning views in the distance of Falmouth Harbour. This area also has excellent Wifi. The cottages are charmingly furnished with comfortable beds, lovely linens, mosquito netting over every bed, and well equipped kitchens. This time we rented a large Toyota van which held all seven of us. A rental vehicle is necessary as the grocery shops and restaurants in English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour are a short drive away (not walkable distance). The road up to Janie's property is rough but you do get used to it. With such a large group and two children Janie graciously allowed us the use of her large washing machine on a couple of occasions. We drove to Pigeon Point Beach (twice), Half Moon Bay, Galleon Beach, Dutchman's Bay, and Runaway Bay. The three younger adults in our group hiked to Rendezvous Bay twice from Janie's property - a 30 minute hike and well worth it. We took in Stingray City and Laviscount Island (giant tortoises) which the children loved. We also highly recommend the Creole Lobster Lunch Catamaran Cruise which starts from Jolly Harbour. There are many great restaurants in the area. A great take out pizza place is Famous Mauro's Pizza which is just a short drive away (wood-fired brick oven pizza). Overall another amazing holiday in Antigua which was made very special by our hosts, Janie and Geoffrey, and their magical property. Wendy C.

Not what we expected
We were really excited about coming to Antigua for our first time. We never utilized this type of property and always opted for resort style vacations. The property truly is beautiful, and secluded away from everything. Our first impression, driving up the long bumpy dirt road full of potholes was not an enjoyable ride after being terrorized by our car rental agent who drove like a NY cab driver on the narrow winding, very heavily populated 30 minute drive. Once we arrived at the cottage, were were greeted by two very sweet dogs, then Janie greeted us, however was not quite ready for our arrival as last minute cleaning was still underway. We were shown around the property and proceeded to the verandah where we waited for the cleaning team to complete. The view and the breeze from the verandah was absolutely amazing. The pool was very tiny, not inviting, or clean and sparkling as in the pics. After the housekeeping was completed we returned to the cottage to settle in. The towels in the bathroom were old and stained. The kitchen was dingy and felt unclean, the closet in the bedroom was musty. The netting on the bed had holes and then was greeted by two lizards on the bedroom floor! That was it for me. I just couldn't stay here knowing these creatures were roaming around freely. Since there were no doors or windows, security seemed inept as well. Living in our society (we live in rural Rhode Island, USA), it was difficult to get beyond that fact for us. Janie assured us that we were in a safe location, however we just could not get by no doors or windows and lizards in our bedroom. We left the cottage to search for a location that we would feel secure within one hour of our arrival. Janie seemed to not understand our sense of insecurity, kept our 50% deposit. Don't recommend this place if you like to sleep with locked doors and are skiddish about nature sleeping with you!
