The Nellie House was perfectly located in downtown Elkin. Easy walk to Railyard, Angry Troll and all restaurants downtown. Beautiful home, get amenities with lots of extra thought put into it. Snacks, water, extra toiletries, in case you forgot anything. Will definitely be back to stay. Owners did a great job and very responsive when we had a question.
Great Host, Great Historical Home. Really enjoyed our stay. Well worth the money spent. Would do it again. Great people in this town. Great Restaurants. You can see the mountains from here and looking out sitting room window. Lots of perks also. Snacks and water available. If you forgot something it could be here for you sample shampoo, conditioner etc... Thank You so much Jason .
Nice historic house within walking distance of downtown
Cool house with beautiful light, a nice layout and interesting historical features. The walk downtown is about half a mile down the hill (up on the way back) - just watch your step on the broken sidewalk. The hosts were very nice and generously helped us with something we forgot. At the time we stayed, the ice maker wasn’t working, so if ice matters to you, you might want to check with the hosts on this. We just grabbed a bag of ice and we’re good for the weekend. Other pros:
- Great bathroom light for seeing in the mirror
- Nice hardwood floors in most of the house
- Ceiling fans
- Water tasted fine from the tap
My main criticism is the same one I have in many short-term rentals: Tough for anyone sensitive to scents in plugin air fresheners, scented candles and perfumed laundry detergent. I get a headache from these products, so that wasn’t ideal for me. I realize that many people react differently to chemical scents and some people even enjoy them, so I just mention it for the people who have chemical sensitivities.
The property was clean and nicely decorated. The little niceites in the bathroom. Were a special touch. The back deck was quiet and comfortable. The only issue was the basement had a very strong mildew smell.
The Nellie House is a good base for exploring Elkin and its eateries and walking paths and the surrounding area, including Winston-Salem. We visited when the fall foliage was stunning and enjoyed our time there. The house has plenty of space and a good kitchen. I didn't like that the dining table was in a nook off the living room, far from the kitchen, but that wouldn't bother everyone. Neither of us could stand the smell that hit us when we entered the house. Eventually we found the electronic scent dispensers and removed them for the duration of the stay (and replaced them before leaving). When we tried to air out the house, Jason texted that his wife had driven by and saw that we'd propped open the door. It made me uncomfortable to be spied upon by a host. In the many years of renting, that has never happened to us in quite that way. In conclusion, the house has good qualities, but we were not completely comfortable there.
We love the Nellie House, it was our second time staying there. They honestly have thought of every accommodation, and anything you may have forgotten. Love the location and walking distance to downtown.
Long weekend with friends visiting some of NC wineries. The house was in a central location and the owner provided a new bottle opener and a box of new wine glasses. It was much appreciated. The house was nicely stocked and I loved the little touches of having water and a sweet snacks. Will most definitely stay here again.
