Mississippi River Getaway Spirit Mound, now with high speed internet!

Spirit Mound is a two-story cottage/cabin, situated in a residential woodland area on the bluff on the East side of the Mississippi River along Hwy 35 "Great River Road". The cabin/cottage is modified A-frame construction with partially open "Loft-type" (no bedroom doors) sleeping area divided by an enclosed bathroom and stairway. Spirit Mound has all the comforts of home with all of the mystique of the Mighty Mississippi, multiple nearby boat ramps, and fun family activities just a short drive away. Many of our guests are happy to unplug and enjoy the simple pleasures; however, high speed internet WiFi is available for those who wish to work during their stay. At Spirit Mound, you can relax and have a quiet retreat "from it all", go out and enjoy a craft beer with the locals, or have a full-on river adventure!

The nearest mid-size town nearby is Prairie du Chien, 16 miles south of Spirit Mound on Highway 35 South. This is a good place to pick up groceries, dine out (recommend Fort Mulligan's Tavern for casual and The Black Angus for supper club-style), catch up with internet connectivity, or shop at The Cannery or any of the local antique and gift shops. Hungry for a snack? Stop by Pete's Burgers on Blackhawk Avenue, a classic burger stand popular with locals and visitors alike. Prairie du Chien is also home to several significant historic sites, including Villa Louis and Fort Crawford.

Hiking, biking, and kayaking are available at beautiful Wyalusing State Park. Great views and hiking trails range from easy to difficult for more experienced hikers.

At Marquette and McGregor, Iowa, further south of Prairie du Chien on Hwy 18, you will find Eagle's Landing Winery, some "treasure hunter" antique shops, and spectacular views of the Mississippi River at Pikes Peak State Park.

For local fishing, there is boat access 1/2 mile north of the cabin on Hwy 35, near Lock & Dam No. 9, a popular fishing location. Forget your fishing gear? No problem! Cabela's outdoor super store is just 16 miles south at the north edge of Prairie du Chien.

If you like Native American history, you have found the ideal vacation spot in Spirit Mound. American Indians represent diverse nations of people who flourished in North America for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. The Menominee, Ojibwe (Chippewa), Potawatomi, and Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) peoples are among the original inhabitants of Wisconsin. Even further back in history, prehistoric Mound Builders lived in the area surrounding Spirit Mound cabin and all along the river. The lot adjacent to the cabin was explored and documented in the late 1800’s by the Smithsonian Institution due to the discovery of prehistoric burial mounds at the site. The gently rolling mounds are still visible as peaceful monuments to generations of native people who lived, worked, and hunted here many years ago. Effigy Mounds National Monument, a major group of prehistoric mounds accessible to visitors, is just a half hour's drive, north of Marquette, Iowa on Hwy 76.

Spring time and Summer at Spirit Mound bring a variety of birds, eagles, and waterfowl to the area - great for bird watching. Autumn is "leaf peeping" time at the cabin, and time for the Gays Mills Apple Festival in September! We hope you will enjoy Spirit Mound no matter the season!

During the current concerns over the COVID-19 virus, we have adopted enhanced cleaning procedures recommended to owners by Vrbo/HomeAway. We had 5 people aged from 6-84! The cabin was cozy and perfect. We went to PDC for the day and had a great time. The cabin had all we needed for the stay! We do wish it was less windy so we could have had a fire outside!

Nice place, very clean
Highly recommend this cabin, nice location, lots of wineries in the area and that is what we were there for. Also hit the river boat casino in Iowa, was a fun time. Great place to stay. We left you a whisk and a metal spatula and a few shot glasses, for future travelers!! Thanks for your hospitality!

Very clean, very comfortable, very quiet
Wonderful little two-bedroom cabin. Super clean, nicely furnished, check-in couldn't have been simpler. Aside from the occasional train - a sound that we enjoyed - it was very quiet. Lots of birds, deer, and burial mounds on the property. We were headed to Wyalusing and Effigy Mounds Nat'l Monument, so that was a nice surprise.

The Great Getaway
When we walked in, we were amazed how clean it was. Loved the scenery. Didn't want to leave. Traffic on hwy. 35 was a bit noisy. I loved the trains.

Great cabin!
Spirit Mound did not disappoint and was exactly as advertised! My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed celebrating our 27 year anniversary in this cabin. Great location just north of PDC. We enjoyed the nearby attractions and dining. Dan and Jan did a great job of the overall organization and decoration of the cabin incorporating the local history. And if you forgot to bring something from home, they most likely have thought of that too. If you like the outdoors and wildlife, this is the place to stay!

Great stay at Spirit Mound
The cabin/cottage was so completely well supplied with anything and everything you can think of from games, all you need to cook a gourmet dinner or grill, tv, dvd's, bathroom towels and many other details thought of and tastefully provided and decorated. We did not have enough time to explore the immediate area but plan to return so that we can do so and enjoy the amenities more fully. Extremely satisfied.

Great place in the driftless area
We greatly enjoyed our stay. This cabin met all of our needs very well and we appreciated the attention to detail shown with things like extra supplies, charging cords, and labels on the cabinets. The only thing I would caution is the tall step to get into the tub/shower. This wasn’t a problem for us but I can see where it might cause some issues for some. The trains were actually a lot better than the ones at home because there were no crossings nearby thus no train horns (there are at least five in our small town). Highly recommend this cabin.

Mississippi river get away
The setting was great, very clean home. We should have been informed there would be no wifi or tv service, the dvd play and selection of movies was very good however. Also, the only toilet made a constant running noise and the left side stove top burner did not function properly. Otherwise we did enjoy the peace and quite of the place during our stay. The train and bird sounds were nice and the closeness to the river was enchanting.

From the moment we booked our trip, to the stay and our departure, we had nothing but a great experience. Our host was very friendly and informative. There were no surprises and we had plenty of information from the host. The cabin was exactly as promised and even better than we expected. Anything and everything you would need is provided in the cabin and it was immaculate. The property was beautiful with plenty of room to lounge on the deck or sit by the fire pit and relax. You can hear the road traffic from down the hill and when the trains pass by down the road it is pretty loud but other than that it was very peaceful and relaxing. We would highly recommend Spirit Mound and plan on coming back to stay sometime in the future.

Best Hosts Ever!
We ended up with a very difficult situation: the A/C for the upstairs, where the bedrooms are, was broken. We tried to make it work but nothing solved the problem. I conferred with Jan about options and she went far, far out of her way to try to find us another place to stay. Such good people. It's a beautiful little cabin that we would have LOVED to be in when it wasn't 95+ degrees (or the A/C was working!). We brought our dog and he loved it, too! Thank you, Jan and Dan. We really appreciate how wonderful you are.

Cute cabin
Spirit Mound is a very cute cabin in a nice location. Jan was excellent to work with and responded very promptly to messages. The area is beautiful and it is located within a few miles of shopping and restaurants. We took a small fishing boat which we were able to park at the cabin and put in the river at the boat launch ~1/2 mile away. The cabin has a nice deck on the back with comfortable furniture. We did have to sweep the deck and clean off the table and chairs before we were able to enjoy it. There is also a nice fire pit in a separate area that also serves as a grill. The bedrooms and bathroom are both upstairs. I would say this property may be best for families since the upstairs is an open area and there are no doors upstairs where the bedrooms are located. Overall we enjoyed our stay. Thanks Jan!

A Balm for Our Souls
The last year or so has been a very difficult time for all of us. This was our first trip together for some time. We loved the cabin and the location. We were pleasantly surprised at the amount of kitchen supplies for cooking, and we all loved the dining table and related furniture. The deck on three sides, and the yard was where we spent much of our time. The property was just what all of us wanted with an abundance of birds, wildlife and privacy. The oaks gave a nice high canopy that filters the light and provides a cool setting when warm, and which the birds fill with their presence. The river is just visible through the canopy but barely. Will be much better river viewing when the leaves are gone. A short walk down the driveway and the river is visible. The cabin is just far enough from the rail and highway that the train/vehicle sounds were not too loud. Our overall impression was very positive and we will want to stay again. Quiet & secluded
This was a very clean property. It was well stocked with anything & everything you could need. There is a full kitchen, meaning stove, full size refrigerator (important to me) & microwave. The property is about a 1/4 mile off Hwy 35. It was very easy to get our truck & trailer (24 ft.) to the cabin. We had no problems riding the motorcycle down the road. It is centrally located so we were able to visit Prairie du Chein, Lacrosse & Onalaska, WI, Dubuque, Marquette & McGregor, IA. And many other smaller communities. There is no internet service or cable/satellite at this cabin. Our cell phones worked perfectly (cell tower nearby) & I used our hotspot one night to watch a movie on our laptop. There is a tv with a DVD player & MANY DVDs to choose from. Having no tv really didn't bother us because we don't have tv at home. We spent much our time away from the cabin & exploring the area. There is a lot of history in that area. This was an enjoyable, relaxing vacation away from all the hustle & bustle of the world. A must place to stay to destress!

An amazing cabin for a weekend away
We absolutely loved staying at this rental. It was clean, cozy, easy to access and secluded. It was very comfortable- there were plenty of kitchen supplies, towels, and little touches to make you feel right at home. When a repair took place, the communication was transparent and we weren't inconvenienced in the slightest. The cabin is near wonderful hiking paths and a short drive from basic needs like groceries, gas, and firewood. I would highly recommend this rental if you'd like a quiet weekend away.
