Neighborhood
The West Village is a quiet neighborhood that is considered "up and coming" to some, "trendy" to some, and "too quiet" for others.
Here are some things to note:
There are two James Beard nominated establishments one block from the property; a new school, new park, and massive luxury apartment building in addition to a cute bookstore, wine shop, dog friendly bar and more are all within a 5-7 min walk. If you step onto the other side of Van Dyke, you will find yourself in Indian Village: a neighborhood well known for its sprawling mansions and architectural gems that once housed the Fords and Lelands. The West Village, itself, is in the National Historic Registry because of some of the stunning properties built between 1900-1925.
However,
Like EVERY SINGLE neighborhood in Detroit proper, there are many homes and buildings that are in pretty rough shape and just as many that have been completely abandoned. There are several books dedicated to the unprecedented exodus from Detroit in the 1960's and 1970's and the city has only very recently begun to emerge from infamous neglect. If you are not familiar with this city, the landscape can be alarming. You might think it is just this neighborhood but it's actually your sign that you are officially in Detroit!
Safety
We cannot speak to the safety of a neighborhood for a few reasons:
1. Fair Housing and such prohibits it, and
2. Crime happens literally everywhere
However, if you are concerned about crime and safety, please take a look at any of the various neighborhood crime maps available on the internet. Detroit Metro Police has their own crime tracker that is updated by the hour, and while we feel very good about what's happening in the Villages., this is a major city that has been in flux for a long time. Please look up West Village (our neighborhood), Indian Village and Islandview (the neighborhoods we border) before choosing where you want to stay in Detroit. We want you to feel comfortable during your trip!
We love this neighborhood! It has some excellent food, coffee, shops, and most of our neighbors are lovely, friendly people. We hope you will love it too.
