Peaceful Farm Cottage in the 'Heart of Argyll' over-looking Loch Awe

With lovely views over Loch Awe from the master bedroom, lounge, sunroom and garden, Barr-beithe Upper is situated on a hill farm in a scenic area of rural Argyll with just a short walk to the shore of Loch Awe.

Argyll with its lochs, hills and mountains to climb is one of the most scenic areas of Scotland and Barr-beithe Upper is a good base for exploring Oban, Inveraray, Glencoe, Loch Lomond, mid-Argyll where you’ll find Crinan Canal and historic Kilmartin Glen, and the beautiful peninsula of Kintyre.

Closer to home you can book online to visit Kintail Birds of Prey in Eredine Village or join a Cladich Farm Tour to see their highland cattle or enjoy a walk up the nearby forest track or to the ruined settlements on the farm.

The large well-equipped kitchen/diner at the back of the house looks across the hillside by the cottage.

Looking over Loch Awe, the lounge has comfortable seating for 6, TV and a coal-effect gas stove.

The sunroom has seating for 4 and gives access to the garden.

There are 3 bedrooms;
Bedroom 1: King-sized double
Bedrooms 2: zipped linked super-king or twin (single) beds
Bedrooms 3: twin (single) beds

Beds will be made for you and towels supplied for your arrival as follows: one bath towel per person, a hand towel in both the shower and bathrooms as well as hand and dish towels for the kitchen.

There are both a shower room and a separate bathroom.

There are 3 steps and a handrail to the entrance porch and this has plenty space for storing boots, shoes and hanging coats.

The garden is full of azaleas and heathers and a picnic table and sitting-bench enjoy good views over Loch Awe.

Loch Awe
Loch Awe is 25 miles long and the longest loch in Scotland. Surrounded by forests, farms, hills and mighty Ben Cruachan .

The Farm
Traditional blackface sheep and luing cattle are farmed on 2,000 acres in this beautiful area of Argyll and guests are welcome to walk and explore the farm:
- to fish or enjoy a walk to the loch shore
- to the viewpoint on An Sidhean (fairy/enchanted view) for a picnic and amazing views of Loch Awe
- to old ruined settlements abandoned nearly 150 years ago
- on a nearby forest walk (circular walk coming back via the farm)
- to our many waterfalls. The wide waterfall on Allt Beochlich is at Barr-beithe.

Fishing on Loch Awe
Fishing for trout and pike is by permit and these are available online.

Nature and wildlife:
Red squirrels and Pine Marten come to the feeder by Barn, though the Pine Marten are generally night visitors. Red Deer come into the fields in the evening especially during the colder months and they often take a short cut by Barn when returning to the hill in the morning. When travelling home in the evening you will probably see some small Roe Deer by the roadside. During the spring and summer Loch Awe is also home to many Osprey which swoop down to take fish from the loch. Kintail Birds of Prey is nearby.
Eagles, dolphins and porpoises are best seen by joining an organized tour from Oban, Easdale or Crinan.

Exploring Argyll and the west highlands of Scotland:
Some ideas, walks and wonderful scenery within easy reach on a day out:
- Oban and the distillery
- Islands of Mull and Iona (ferry from Oban) & wildlife tours
- Inveraray Castle and old victorian Jail
- Ruined Castles especially Kilchurn, near Dalmally on Loch Awe and Carnasserie Castle near Kilmartin
- majestic Glen Coe which has amazing mountain scenery and the wilderness of Rannoch Moor which you will see enroute, plus the red deer along Glen Etive if you take a little diversion
- the ‘bonny banks’ of Loch Lomond – the little village of Luss is nice
- Kilmartin Glen has standing stones,

For children
Inveraray Castle and Jail both have a quiz to hold the interest of young people and for activities Argyll Adventure offers pony trekking and zombie games. Another popular afternoon out is to the Scottish Seal Sanctuary which also has otters and an indoor aquarium.

Cycling: if you bring your own bicycles then the tow path along Crinan Canal is lovely.

Horse Riding: Argyll Adventure near Inveraray offer 1hour and 2 hour treks.

Walking: guests are welcome to explore the farm, and our nearest Munro (mountain over 3,000ft) is Ben Cruachan at the end North end of Loch Awe.

Eating Out: there are many lovely cafes, pubs and restaurants for lunch or homemade cake when out and about exploring Argyll and most guests do opt to enjoy a good lunch or early evening meal before returning to their cottage to relax and enjoy the view.

Amazing views of highlands and lakes

We really loved the property, its surroundings and the views. Very picturesque and quiet location, no neighbors – just you and nature. Views of the front garden and the lake down the hill are amazing. Plenty of mountains, castle ruins and trails to explore around the lake. We greatly enjoyed our stay in this lovely house, which did provide everything we need for a nice family get away. The host is very responsive and assists with every needs, greatly appreciated!

Another great trip to the highlands

We all had a great time during our stay at this lovely, peaceful cottage. The cottage was a little further off the main road than expected but this added to its charm. We organized our food shopping early on in the week and spent our evenings relaxing in the cottage looking at the spectacular views from most rooms. We did lots of walking and climbing and it was a pleasure to come back to this warm, cosy cottage at the end of the day.

Lovely

A very nice house, very clean and spacious. Great shower and good beds. Kitchen well equipped. The garden is lovely, great views over the lake. Lots of privacy and remote. It does take some time to get to the main (larger) road - driving over a very narrow street along the lake is quite challenging for folks from Europe!

Picture-perfect on Loch Awe-some!

You know it is going to be a good day at Barr-Beithe Upper when you draw the curtains in the morning and your view of Loch Awe-some is framed by blooming azaleas and rhododendrons! Although we knew the cottage would be too big for just the two of us, we picked it anyway because of the location and the garden and we were not disappointed. We were pleased to see that it is also very well-appointed with high-end appliances, good quality cookware and a great shower! Catriona's communication and recommendations were very helpful and her cheery smile made us feel genuinely welcome.

Excellent week on Loch Awe

Lovely cottage with amazing views and a terrific location. We really enjoyed our week staying on and travelling around Loch Awe. Catriona could not have been a more welcoming and effective host, and her extensive recommendations on where to go were spot on. Cottage was immaculate, very well equipped and Covid precautions were excellent. Highly recommended.

Peaceful house with stunning views

This is a beautiful place to stay. We barely left the property and spent most of the time paddleboarding on the loch, which you can walk down to. The house is very well equipped with comfy beds and Catriona was a great host.

Short stay at Upper Barr Beithe

We have just returned from a 5 night stay at Upper Barr Beithe and have had a fabulous time. The cottage is set back off the road with fabulous views of the Loch and surrounding area. It is spacious, clean and homely. There is plenty of storage space and an area for taking off coats, boots etc. The Property Manager, Catriona was very helpful and answered any queries we had before and during our stay very quickly. Really couldn’t fault the place and would definitely recommend.

Fantastic Cottage and Location

A superb cottage tucked well out of the way from everything. Couldn’t have asked for any more, owner Catriona couldn’t have done any more for us. Cottage had everything you could ask for and was very well presented. Location is tucked away but that’s what we wanted, walking on the doorstep and spectacular views. Fantastic relaxing week. Would stay again.

Lovely holiday in Loch Awe

We had a wonderful family holiday in a lovely cottage with fantastic views overlooking Loch Awe to the front and hills to the back. Large well stocked clean kitchen, living room with great views and a sunroom leading out to the garden from where we could observe many birds. The bedrooms were all very clean and comfortable. We managed lots of local walks including hiking around Crinan Canal and.climbing up Ben Cruachan. In short a great place to stay and highly recommended!!

Fantastic views, peaceful location

The property was spacious, comfortable and very clean. Catriona made extra efforts to make us feel safe and comfortable even though we are in the middle of the covid pandemic. The location of the property is perfect for a quiet break, with lovely views of the loch and it is the perfect place for relaxing, exploring, cycling and kayaking. Looking forward to a return visit now!

A lovely home from home with magnificent views

We arrived late afternoon, after a long journey from Leeds but immediately felt at home. Catriona gave us a couple of hours before she came to check all was ok. She didn't come in, owing to Covid 19 but explained everything from the doorstep. Our two teenage grandsons took the back twin room, leaving the two front rooms with beautiful views of the loch for their Mum and my husband and I. The bungalow was spotlessly clean and the two bathrooms were very useful with five of us together. The narrow roads with passing places made for longish journies when visiting places of interest but we all had a lovely time, visiting Oban, the Crinnan canal, Inverary Jail, Mull of Kintyre amongst other places. I would recommend this peaceful bungalow highly.

Nous avons beaucoup apprécié l'aménagement du cottage, on s'y sent chez soi. L'accès est un peu difficile en voiture mais une fois arrivés on est en pleine nature et c'est magnifique! Merci à Catriona pour son accueil et ses conseils.

Uitstekende cottage in schitterend landschap

Lovely Cottage with Great Views

Very spacious, comfortable & clean accommodation with lovely views over Loch Awe & the hills behind. It was very peaceful staying here you could just stay in the cottage & enjoy the views & walks without using your car. Well stocked kitchen and a dishwasher & washing machine were a great bonus. Catriona is lovely & was very helpful when we arrived explaining everything we needed to know. We would highly recommend this cottage & hope to go back in 2017

Happy Memories

The week went so quickly and we walked a lot, we saw wonderful places like Arduaine Gardens, Monument Hill at Dalmally, enjoyed walks along Crinan Canal and through the forest to the Blarghour dam, and we ate out at the Loch Fyne Seafood restaurant. This has been our fourth visit and we will take away such happy memories of the stunning views of Loch Awe and the sunsets over the hills and lochs. The cottage is so well-appointed and spotlessly clean to make our stay so comfortable. Thank-you for the delicious shortbread which was here on our arrival. We also found the book on the history of South Loch Awe-side absolutely fascinating. We're sure we will return and thank-you so much. H&J

A wonderful week

Everything was like the description (even more than we expected), A nice, clean, well prepared home with a good contact to the owners, who cared immediately for the few questions we had. We could enjoy a week of relaxing, beautiful countryside and would propose everyone coming to this location the view from the sitting-room and the view from the top of the "hill" (take at least half an hour to get on the top, although it seems just a short way) - you will have lasting memories of a beautiful scenery. And there are lots of walks, climbing and (by car) places to visit. We recommend this property and will probably come back when visiting Scotland.
