The oldest settlement had settled on the famous Montagne des Zorras: mountain, watchtower and refuge since prehistoric times, as is the case of the Abri Rupestre Lambert (named after its discoverer) where several reddish figures, with schematic shapes, representations of men and animals, declared World Heritage by Unesco. Next to it, the Les Olivaretes settlement, from the Bronze Age.

It has been identified as the Sicana of the 5th century Bc. to which the classical texts refer. The Romans would call it Sucro y Portum Sucrone (xuquer, is in Valencian the name of the river), leaving some vestiges there (under the current district of Rapida), in particular, the remains of a salting factory (in the rue Agustin Olivert).

They would deliver some of the captives against ransom given in the cove of Cabo Blanco (where nowadays is a cave-museum)

The locality remained practically deserted during the following decades. The Tower of Santa Ana was then built and the walls of the castle were reinforced, also walling up the city and also building watchtowers, like the Marenyet (1577). Security assured, new populations come who develop rice cultivation and trade. The great profits obtained allow the construction of temples and majestic residences.
