This little cottage is a sweet retreat/get-away located at the Ogles Creek Bridge on Old Midland Trail Road in Callaghan, Va. between the Greenbrier, White Sulphur Springs, W. Va. and Covington Va. and within 20 miles of the Homestead Golf Resort, Hot Springs Va. Scenic areas such as Humpback Bridge Wayside and Falling Springs are minutes away. The cottage is in a rural setting off the main road(Old Route 60, now called Midland Trail Road) and easy access parking for several vehicles, cars, trucks, and or trailers. It sits on 4 acres bordered by Ogles Creek, US Interstate 64, and Midland Trail Road. Basic shopping and gas are available within 2 miles of the house plus a bakery within close driving range. A great place to stay if attending the PGA in July or the W. Va. State Fair in August or for just a break along the way North or South. Interstate access is within a mile of the cottage. Many historic sites are close by as well as fly fishing within a few miles.

The house was built on a site that was once a 50’s streetcar diner (eventually donated to a transportation museum in Maine by the former owners). The Little House was built new in 2003 on the original footprint. It is a one-bedroom, open concept cottage. It has a “vintage” style bathroom with claw-foot tub and shower, a laundry closet with washer and dryer. The cottage has “city” water. Each of its spacious rooms has ceiling fans, including the bathroom. For the summer there are also 2 air conditioning window units for comfort. There is also manually operated baseboard heat for chilly mornings or nights. The kitchen boasts of a new stove and refrigerator, microwave, toaster oven, and coffee maker plus an island with two stools and a table with 4 chairs for sit down meals. There is also a table and chairs wrought iron set on the porch for outdoor sitting or dining convenience. Dishes, glasses, pots and pans, and utensils are supplied. There is one bedroom with a king-size bed and one twin and in the living area, there is a queen hide-a-bed couch. Linens are available for all beds and the bathroom. There is also a walk-in closet for clothes.

The house has an internet and basic cable TV. The television is a smart TV with Hulu and Netflix built-in so renters can easily access their own accounts for additional entertainment. The cottage is “pet friendly” (the porch is gated on both ends) though it is recommended that all pets have their own beds/crates, litter boxes, etc. and must be contained if left alone. Dogs over 75 lbs are discouraged and birds are prohibited.

Great little cabin!
We were in the area to go fly-fishing on the Jackson River. This cabin was conveniently located and very clean and comfortable. The porch area was a little noisy due to the nearby highways, but it was still very pleasant to sit there and look at the stars in the evening - and when it was time to sleep, the bedroom was quiet. The fresh flowers and peanut butter cookies were a really nice touch.

Great location, self contained getaway
We would definitely come back again, we felt very much at home. The kitchen was fully equipped, the open plan gave the feeling of spaciousness and we were greeted with fresh flowers and delicious sourdough bread from the nearby bakery. The absence of near neighbors was a blessing in this time of pandemic.

Nice Little College
Cottage was very clean and tidy with everything I needed for my stay! Though there is road noise, don’t let it deter you from selecting this little house. I did not even notice the road noise at night. I will definitely stay here again!

Lovely little house!
We had a wonderful stay in this sweet little house! Natalie is a perfect host and very helpful! We had everything we needed for our stay and we were pleasantly surprised at how well stocked the kitchen was! The fenced in yard was fabulous and our dogs loved being able to play and run while we enjoyed sitting on the porch. The fresh bread and flowers were a lovely surprise as well. I highly recommend this great little house and we hope to visit again soon!

Review of cottage
Overall we had a great time exploring that part of the Alleghenies and Sandra and Natalie were great in their suggestions for other possibilities that we did not know about. It was a very nice cottage to stay in and very centrally located to all the activities and places we wanted to visit. They treated us to a loaf of homemade bread and fresh flowers on the table. The property was beautiful.

Great property...little noisy
Most excellent cabin as it was clean with nice amenities. Fenced yard was great with large deck. Location 100 yards away from Rt. 64 and 75 ft from Midland Trail did make for pretty continuous traffic noise. If that is not an issue/concern it is a nice place to stay.

Friends place
When you walk in there were fresh flowers, a loaf of locally baked bread and a note asking for you to call when you get in. Felt like you were walking into a friends cabin that you had borrowed. Very welcoming and peaceful. My partner and I throughly enjoyed our stay and will return again!

Convenient but Private Location
Natalie, the property manager met us at the cabin to welcome us and left fresh flowers and bread from a local bakery. The smelled so nice and fresh upon entering and the AC felt great. The king size bed was so comfortable!! The cabin is located between 64 and another road, so you can hear cars but the backyard is private with no neighbors in view. Thank you for a great stay.

Wonderful Getaway
My wife and I certainly enjoyed our long weekend at the cottage. The hostess was welcoming and easy to work with. We found the home to be clean and neat, and we were greeted with fresh flowers and rolls. The place is attractive and tastefully decorated. The kitchen has all the amenities one needs to make meals. The appliances are in good working order. The furnishings are in good condition and comfortable. All technology worked seamlessly. It was great to getaway and relax at the cottage. We hope to visit again.

Great little retreat in southern VA
Nice, cute cottage in the Alleghany County region. All the amenities we needed, plus great access to nearby hiking and kayaking spots. No neighbors, so it was easy to keep our distance... took great advantage of the grill on the porch deck as well! Lovely place for a long weekend stay from DC. The only thing I would be aware of is the proximity of I-64, which passes on the other side of the trees in the backyard. Didn't bother us (couldn't hear it much inside the house), but it is definitely noticeable from the porch... Still well worth a visit!

cozy cottage and great yard
We had a great time. We came up for a weekend of fly fishing and hiking with our dog. The huge fenced-in yard made that a pleasure rather than a challenge. As other reviewers have noted, it's great to sit on the front porch and watch the dog run around/explore. And the bread from the local bakery that was there when we arrived was a very nice treat. Sandra and Natalie were great hosts. We were fly fishing 10 minutes away; so, this was a perfect location for us. It's also close to Lewisburg if you want to head over for more restaurants. We mostly enjoyed relaxing here. Other reviews have noted the noise from cars--the cottage sits 20-30 back from the road it's on, and 64 is fairly close. Yes, you can hear cars, but it didn't bother us at all. We will definitely come back and stay again if we're in the area again!

It was okay
The house was a nice little get away from daily life. However it was dirty, we had to clean and clean just to enjoy without worrying about stepping on something or our dog eating cigarette butts off the floor. There were previous piles of dog defecation in the yard. Bag of open chips under the bed. Small things that made it a nuisance. The highway sounds were nice to hear as background and at night the stars were amazing. Its within range to stores and things to see. Just needed cleaned.

Well cared for but noises
The property was well taken care of with nice furnishings and touches including indoor and outdoor plants, fresh bread. Owner and cleaning lady both nice and helpful. Yard was recently fenced which was great for the dog. While others noted road noise was only an issue outside, with window a/c units still in place it was noticeable inside. Place really needs ductless split HVAC to reduce noise. Refrigerator was also making intermittent noises that were quite loud for 20 min at a time (compressor problem?). Only left us like 1/3 roll of paper towels and not even napkins so in covid era had to run out for that right away.

Cute
This is a very cute cottage. The location is right off of a major road and 64 (highway) is behind the property so this is not great for peace and quiet. That being said, we greatly appreciated the fenced in yard for our dogs. In addition, the wifi access was much needed. The area is a great place for hikes. I would have liked to seen a little bit more care in the cleaning of the cottage and when I mentioned this to the property manager, I got no response. The kitchen is well equipped and is great for making meals. The bathroom is adorable with a claw foot tub which was great for soaking. The porch is lovely and the cooling system works well. I appreciated all the touches of flowers around the cottage. The convenience of the washer and dryer was great as well. I highly recommend visiting the town in West Virginia. It was adorable. The hike to roaring run falls was amazing and a must do.

Cute cottage, inaccurate listing description of policy
We really liked the cottage for what it is. It is very cute and well maintained. However, we specifically looked for a property where we could have our dogs with us. This listing states that the property is pet friendly and allows pets for an extra fee per pet. We booked it and paid the extra pet fees. Upon arrival, there was a note on the bedroom door that stated "no dogs in the bedroom." This stipulation was not anywhere on the listing, nor was it on the extra information sheet sent to us after booking. There was only the living room and the bedroom to this cottage. So we paid the extra pet fees for the entire cottage, but our dogs were only allowed in half of it. We found this unacceptable after having paid the extra pet fees. Had this been made clear in the description, we would have chosen a different property. The other reviews mentioned noise from the highway, but I didn't realize it was so close that I could throw a stone to one side and land on the interstate, and to the other side and land on a busy road. Not quite the quiet country retreat we were envisioning. The tradeoff is that our dogs loved the big fenced yard. We enjoyed seeing them run and play without a leash.

My husband and I booked this place because we wanted to see some sights around Lewisburg and Covington and drive to the Cass scenic Railway about 1.5 hours away . By the way , if you go there, bring a map because you lose GPS when you get closer to it , but highly recommend ! We had great weather the whole time , easy access to different places , including taking a tour of The Greenbrier Hotel. The groundskeeper of this cottage , Natalie, was very friendly and informative . We were cool with the air and warm with the baseboard heater . Place was clean and bed comfortable ! I’m a light sleeper , so if you are too, bring ear plugs or some kind of white noise because the road noise from the highway at night is the only negative about our stay . Otherwise , a very nice stay !
