Cortes Beachfront Home w/Hot Tub & Kayak on 5 Wooded Acres

The Wilcox Lodge is a serene retreat nestled on 5 wooded acres on the shore of Gorge Harbour, Cortes Island, considered by many to be the best of the Evergreen Islands. These islands are located on the famed 'inside passage' used by ships going to and from Alaska and are sheltered from winter Pacific storms by Vancouver Island, one of the largest and most interesting islands in the Northern Hemisphere. Cortes Island is served by regular scheduled ferry service from Campbell River. Campbell River on the east side of Vancouver Island has scheduled airline service from Vancouver (host city to the 2010 Winter Olympics), and charter service direct to Gorge Harbour is available from Seattle, Victoria, Vancouver and Campbell River.

Cortes Island is in the 'rain shadow' of Vancouver Island and has far less precipitation than Victoria or Vancouver. Weather is usually warm and sunny with cool evenings May thru October.

The Lodge is situated just above the beach with a panoramic view of the harbour and a view thru the harbour entrance of Vancouver Island mountains in the distance. Wildlife abounds. You may see bald eagles and many varieties of birds, deer down by the beach or out the kitchen window, sea lions, seals or an otter playfully swimming by, mink, and perhaps dolphins or a whale on the ferry ride over.

With nearly 1,500 sq. ft of living space, this rustic Lodge has all modern conveniences, a full well-equipped kitchen, comfortable and spacious living/dining area that opens onto a large 750+ sq. ft. L-shaped deck overlooking the beach and harbour. Hot tub on the deck. 2 chaise lounges make for lazy sunbathing/reading afternoons on the deck and the cafe & dining tables are a perfect spot for outdoor dining. Anyone for oysters on the barbeque??? Stairs off the deck provide access to the beach over a short but bumpy path. Kayak available for guest use. The Lodge sleeps 6: 2 in the lower loft (California King sleigh bed with McCroskey firm mattress & box spring), 4 in the upper loft (double bed and trundle bed with 2 twin mattresses). The Lodge is an 'A' frame with an open floor plan, the upper loft is accessed thru the lower loft and both lofts are partially open to the main living area (so no bedroom privacy). The bathroom has a sink, toilet, shower and a clothes washer (dry your clothes outside on the clothes line, they will smell so fresh and good); there is also an outhouse. There is ample parking for several cars. There is a land line phone for local calls & limited long distance, WiFi internet, 32' Sony flat screen TV w/DVD player in the lower loft (no TV channels, cable or satellite, just for DVDs), CD player and record player w/record collection just for old times sake. We also have a collection of books, some by local authors, and some board games for the chance rainy day. Feel free to add a shell or two to our display case coffee table in the upper loft or a beach combing find to our entry way beach combers wall. You'll also find a kayak under the house which you can use during your stay... Main thing is to unwind, have fun, enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings...

Note this is a rustic beach house......not a modern city home transported to water's edge....we are continually upgrading the property but not everything is 'all perfect'...although we keep making improvements each year.

Also note that the private driveway is a bit rough and bumpy in places. You need to drive very slowly and carefully to avoid scraping the bottom of the car on the driveway or bushes along side the driveway.

The Lodge is not as remote as it sounds, one neighbor's cottage is very close by and can be seen from the deck & from the lower loft bedroom bay window, there is a small cabin in the woods up the road not visible from the main house, others are within walking distance as is the Gorge Marina with restaurant, small grocery, laundromat, gasoline, and a new beautiful outdoor swimming pool & hot tub overlooking the harbour/marina and open to the public. The Lodge is 2 1/2 miles from downtown Whaletown with government dock, post office, church and mini-library.

When you tire of hanging out around the Lodge, numerous outdoor recreational opportunities abound: fishing, boating, sailing, kayaking, hiking, biking, swimming at the Marina pool or Hague Lake, Hollyhock retreat center courses, other beaches to explore, skate board park...

Call now to reserve for summer 2018, availability in June, July, August, Sept and Oct. All are great vacation months!

I don't want to tell you how good it really was!
The place is even better than advertised. It's location is close to many great amenities on Cortes, including fairly close to the ferry, the grocery and a nice, dockside restaurant. Sue was a pleasure to work with from beginning to end, always highly responsive. Really, this place is so great I'd like to keep it a secret so we can easily book for years to come. Can't wait to come back!

Charming Cabin
A charming, well appointed cabin overlooking Gorge Harbour. We absolutely loved our time on Cortes: kayaking, hiking and exploring the beaches. Sue was great to deal with and very responsive. Dan, Jill and the doggos

One of our best vacations!
My family had one of the best vacations at Wilcox lodge. The cabin was clean, well stocked and the deck with the amazing views and hot tub were such a bonus. I would most definitely recommend this place to my friends and family. And they allowed our beloved puppy to join us!

Relaxing Spring Break with the Kids at the Beach
We had such a wonderful time at the cabin. So relaxing and fun and a perfect spring break. Enjoyed beach walks & play, exploring Gorge Harbour in our new inflatable boat, clam digging at Mansons, and doing some maintenance work around the place for my cousin Sue. The kids loved the Easter egg hunt & pancake breakfast with tug of war and other kids games. Coming back again next year. Kristy VN

A hidden gem amongst the island wilderness!
Our stay at the Wilcox Lodge was nothing short of magical. It's the kind of place where you feel totally one with nature. The huge deck offers amazing views of the surrounding ocean and the opportunity to watch all kinds of wildlife pass by. The sunsets were incredible!! The kayaks were so much fun to take out and to explore the coastline. A definite must if you're visiting. The spacious layout of the cabin allows for a perfect area for gatherings and lots of conversation pieces. We loved looking at all the eclectic decor! The free standing fireplace was a big hit with us as we had some rain one day and it made for a cozy evening curled up with a book and some tea. Sue looked after us so well and was available to answer any questions we had. If you're looking to disconnect from the hustle and bustle and find some serenity, this is the place to do so!! A little slice of heaven that you never want to leave. We feel lucky to have visited. Thanks Sue!!

Lovely setting, great views and nice hot tub.
We had a good stay. And enjoy the scenery and the nearest to the water. Worked for the 4 of us, to kayak and relax.

Rustic
Having rented many cottages, apartments and homes worldwide, I feel I have a good grip on value for accommodation. This property is overpriced. The place was not particularly clean, cobwebs and dust throughout. The bedding was flannel (strange choice for the summer) and the towels were all mismatched and all we could find were hand towels in a chest. There are personal items in all the drawers, we kept our clothes in our suitcases. The beds were fairly comfortable. This property could be 5 star with just a little effort. The view is lovely.

The location and setting couldn't be beat, absolutely beautiful!
It's clear the cottage and island are both loved by the owner, this was reflected through the books both personal and historical that filled the book case. The cottage has all the necessities, kayak was a nice bonus, and the welcome gift of coffee and wine was a great surprise. We really appreciated being able to bring our dog and so did he. We would stay here again.

Beautiful cabin, wonderful views
What an amazing location for a cabin. The cabin is spacious and has everything that you need, a bit dated but this adds to the charm. Views from the hot tub are amazing and being able to Kayak to dinner at the marina a definite plus. We had a great time with 2 adults and 2 children. Sue was very responsive to my emails and phone call.

Tranquil and Beautiful!
We love Sue's place so much! It is our 3rd time there! Very comfortable for ultimate relaxation. The harbour is full of surprises to watch from seals and birds to Orca's chasing in Seals! They hid under the Oyster rafts! Even saw a humpback whale on the ferry! What a magical place!

In a word - the Wilcox Lodge is - PARADISE !!
This is our second year in a row visiting Cortes Island and would not stay anywhere but the Wilcox Lodge. We are a family of 6 and the cabin has plenty of space for everyone ! The balcony is huge and has a fantastic view of the harbour - walk down the stairs right onto the beach - use the cabins kayaks and go explore the waters . Relax in the hot tub. There are lots of trails on Cortes for hikers and wonderful beaches - Hanks Beach, the beach at Hollyhock, Mansons Landing and Lagoon, Hague Lake and our favorite - Smelt Bay. As there are a couple of stores on the Island -but the selection is limited and quite expensive - I do recommend bringing your groceries with you. The cabin has a large fridge as well as a chest freezer. Sue is great to deal with - she responds to emails quickly and if any issues arise during your stay - there is a phone to call her and she will address them . The people on the island are very friendly - it is a quiet, serene and peaceful island - we will definitely be back next summer for our 3rd year in a row ;)

Heavenly peace and quiet
The cabin is tucked away in the woods with a deck that opens onto the bay. Hands down, it is the most peaceful and relaxing place I've stayed. With all windows open you feel as though you are outside even when you are inside. The moonlight view of the bay from the bed at night can't be beat. There is ample and comfortable sleeping for a family with multiple kids. Cortes is a nature-lover's paradise. My 2 young children, husband and I enjoyed shell seeking, berry-picking, swimming in the ocean and lake, and hiking. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to get away from it all and find peace in nature.

Spectacular Gorge Harbor retreat
The setting of this cabin is incomparable. A beautiful large, sunny deck, with hot tub, overlooks the comings and goings of the harbor. The cabin itself is well equipped with tons of kitchen accessories and ample bedding and towels. A small deep freeze is handy for the fishers in the family. On-site kayaks are: 1 single and 1 double (however, there was only 1 paddle available for both)...it's fun to kayak over to the marina store, shop, rent videos and even partake in morning yoga at the resort! Lots of great kayaking at your doorstep in beautiful clear, calm waters. Easy access to bike trails, too, if that's your thing. We biked to Carrington Bay as well as the new Whaletown Commons, both starting from "home". We loved the master bedroom view of the harbor and didn't mind the curtain which acts as the separator to the higher loft bedroom. All beds are super comfy! If you like somewhat rustic cabins, no wifi, relaxing on decks while watching seals, boats and seaplanes, and having a central "base", then you will love Wilcox 1!

The views from Wilcox 1 are spectacular!
We have visited a few rental properties on Cortes and while this property needs more upgrading, it is a very comfortable spot with spectacular views of the harbour from the deck. This ultra quiet location has everything you need for a restful retreat from the hustle and bustle. We always enjoy the various markets on the island and the fun community activities as well the museums. We have recommended that the kayak launch on Wilcox 1 be worked on as it is currently difficult; therefore, until that is fixed you may wish to safely launch at the Gorge Harbour Marina, Hague Lake or a zillion other places. Wilcox 1 is a very clean property with the owners very conscientious about continually upgrading the property so that we can all have a grand holiday. Leave your cell phone, ipad and laptop at home! Get unplugged and return home refreshed. Wilcox 1 is a great place to meditate and reconnect with our Godself. I wish there were restaurants on Cortes that are vegan friendly.

Wilcox Cabin on Cortez Island, B.C.
Cute, roomy, funky cabin with a wonderful view of Gorge Harbour. Watch the boats to and from the Marina and hear no Marina noise :) watch the birds and seals, at low tide search the beach for sea creatures. LOVED every minute of it and will be back next summer. Cortez is a lovely peaceful and relaxing island. Really enjoyed the quiet and serenity.:)

The cabin is a little piece of paradise.
The cabin is located right on the water, perfect for collecting the oysters that you will have for dinner. From opening the door upon arrival, you feel the history and love that is in this family home. The mementoes and knick knacks that have been collected over time surround you in the unique structure of the cabin. The windows open to views that make you feel as if you are sleeping in a tree house with a view to the ocean. The island itself is a welcoming artsy place to spend time, make sure you attend the Sat market for local crafts and food. Great beaches to wonder and collect shells or have that romantic picnic. Or spend the day on the cabins deck and relax and read a book and have a dip in the hot tub.

Relaxing and Private Cabin on the Water
We bid on a one week stay on Cortes Island at the SRHS ArtQuest auction in 2013. Our winning bid meant both support for a great program and a wonderful vacation for us. My wife and I spent a tranquil and relaxing week at the Wilcox Lodge on Cortes Island. The house has a cozy cabin feel, especially when reading by the woodstove at night. The open floor plan makes it feel even larger than it is. There was just the two of us, so the lack of bedroom privacy was not an issue. It is something to consider if staying with more people, could be comfortable for a family. There is plenty of space to spread out, but not many walls. The house has lots of windows with views of the harbor. There is one neighbor nearby, yet the house feels completely private. The large deck and hot tub are great for relaxing, watching the tide come in and out, or enjoying a meal. We were there in June and had beautiful weather most days, just a little drizzle here and there. We saw eagles on the beach and in the trees, from the deck. The island is beautiful and the residents were all very friendly. We mostly cooked/grilled our own meals, but did have a wonderful dinner at The Cove restaurant in Squirrel Cove. For shopping on Cortes, there is a lot squeezed into the Co-op store and bakery, as well the other markets. That said if we go again we would likely stock- up more in Campbell River or on Quadra (more selection and better prices). There is a great little museum, in Manson’s Landing, with very friendly folks who have great tips on how to enjoy Cortes. We did a lot of hiking and beach walking. Kw’as Park is beautiful and the views from Green Mountain are spectacular. The ferry ride was part of the adventure too, and some sightseeing on Quadra Island is worth making time for.

Exactly the vacation I needed.
The cabin was rustic, but spacious and well laid out. We spent 5 days and it was the most relaxing trip I have taken in a long time. The view was amazing, and while the other cabins were close it wasn't intrusive. The king sized bed was unbelievably comfortable, and the island was dead quiet at night. I never slept so soundly. I would go again without hesitation.

Family Reunion
My family LOVED staying at this very spacious split level with a pretty beachfront, and windows with beautiful views in all directions. My husband and son used the hot tub every night, talking and watching the moon shine on the water. My sister and I had coffee every morning on the deck and enjoyed seeing the shore birds fishing for breakfast. There was room for us to spread out and have some time to ourselves or to be together. We had a wonderful, stress reducing and happy time at this lovely home on Cortes Island.

Beachfront paradise
Sue's holiday holiday home is a wonderfully quirky house in an idyllic setting on Cortes Island. The property is approached via a rough track that leads you through deeply shaded woods - don't be put off by the bumpy track, the tennant's shack, the outside drop toilet or the 'native' garden, the view and peace is well worth the effort. The house was clean and well appointed if a little tired - the setting over-shadows this and we enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing few days in late July and enjoyed good weather, clear night skies, a full moon and plenty of wildlife - all magical memories that we will cherish. We would have loved to have stopped longer. Neighbouring marina / campsite good for 'crashing' the evening entertainment with camp store on-site for basics. Use of BBQ, vinyl record collection & player, hot-tub & kayaks added to the fun. Sue was very helpful and responded quickly to our queries. I'd recommend this property for those looking for something different.

Fantastic Visit to the Island
We had such a fantastic time at the Lodge! We completely relaxed and enjoyed the peaceful setting. We spent almost every waking moment out on the huge deck basking in the sunshine, enjoying the phenomenal view and even star gazing. The kayaks were a fun bonus (seal watching!) and made it so easy to zip down to the Marina store for groceries and a late afternoon ice cream! The owner was super helpful and really quick to reply to our questions on arrival. We look forward to going back again!

WILL DREAM OF CORTES ISLAND
My husband, daughter and I visited Cortes Island for the first time in August hoping to find an island that was a bit remote, quiet, laid back and scenic. Happily we found all of the above. Cortes is the perfect place to get away from the hub bub. After spending some time searching for the perfect place to stay, we settled on Wilcox Lodge as we were looking for a place with loads of character that felt more funky and charming as opposed to modern and luxe. Staying here felt like we staying at a well-loved cabin where everywhere we looked was a memento of years spent exploring this coastline. Our main goal while on Cortes was to find, cook and eat lots of oysters, clams and other seafood and we achieved this goal. The kitchen was fully stocked and we weren't wanting for any implement or tool and the gas grill was in good working order. As with any A-frame style house, the different levels are pretty "open." The second bedroom is only divided by a curtain that can be closed, but for us this was no problem. The main bedroom has a huge bed that looks out over the harbour and at night the view of the moon rising over the water was spectacular. Our favorite part of the house was the deck where we spent many hours just watching the boats and the kayaks coming in and out of the harbour. It was a perfect vantage point. We also loved exploring the rocky beach at low tide. Hanging out in the living room by the fire doing puzzles and listening to old albums was another favorite activity. Sue, the owner of Wilcox Lodge, was wonderful to work with and so quick to respond to every question and request. We couldn't have asked for a better property owner. All-in-all a great experience and look forward to visiting Wilcox Lodge again soon!

Beautiful spot
My husband and I stayed at Wilcox Lodge for a week. The house was quiet and peaceful. We walked on the beach, kayaked, found hundreds of brilliant purple starfish, and sat with the deer - all without leaving the property! We so enjoyed our stay - Cortes is a wonderful spot - serene and lovely. I highly recommend it. And Wilcox Lodge is charming and welcoming. We lit a fire in the fireplace as it was cool in the evenings and were warm and cozy. Full moon over the Gorge Harbor inlet was romantic. Dinners on the deck were wonderful. I can't wait until we return! Thank you for a great vacation.
