Cedar/Spirit Mountain Retreat-500 acres just for you!

Don’t miss the opportunity to stay in one of Wyoming’s most unique rental homes located near the east entrance to Yellowstone National Park! You cannot visit Cody without taking in the backdrop of beautiful Spirit Mountain (also known as Cedar Mountain). Our VRBO rental sits atop this sprawling mountain where views of the entire Big Horn Basin are unparalleled! If you are looking for a getaway with 500 private acres for hiking and enjoying the outdoors, this one is for you. The lower part of the mountain is a local favorite for hiking, but as you make your way up the mountain, you will enter the property where you will have a secluded retreat, views of the town below, and wildlife all around. In the distance, you will see the Shoshone River with hot pools and giant sink holes beyond.

The first level of the house has a kitchen, one bedroom with a trundle bed (2 singles), one bathroom, and a laundry room. On the main level, you will find the living room with a wet bar, one queen hide-a-bed, and another trundle bed. When walking out on the deck from this level, there is a firepit and expansive views of the surrounding area, including the town of Cody below. The top level consists of the master, which has a queen bed, a pull-out futon, and a full bathroom. From the bath on this level, you can look out on the beauty of Wyoming. The home has been recently remodeled, is 2100 square feet, and has a fireplace on every level.

This home is the perfect getaway for relaxing in total serenity, taking in adventure and hiking, and hanging out with friends and family. Spirit Mountain Cave is just down the road. People interested in spelunking can contact the local BLM office for instructions on how to enter the cave. Cody is located at the base of the mountain where you will find shopping, dining, entertainment, and have the opportunity to visit the world-famous Buffalo Bill Center of the West.

The cabin is great! Amazing views, it was clean and Erin got back to us quickly with all our questions. The road is the only downside definitely need 4x4 with high clearance.

Unable to make it up the mountain
We had really hoped to stay at this property, but the drive up the mountain was terrifying. We made it one of the three miles up the mountain in our pickup truck and decided it was safest to turn around and book a hotel instead. I’m sure the property is beautiful but we could not make it up the “road”. Please note this is not a paved road, has very large rocks that tore up our tires and make the truck bottom out, and the entire drive was a narrow path on the edge of the mountain with steep drop offs. I don’t believe this drive is suitable for any vehicle.

Amazing - NO other house like this!
This is truly a unique location & as far as we could tell, the ONLY home on Spirit Mountain. If you want privacy/seclusion & amazing views, this is the place! Each of us in our family had a great week there. Our 4 year old loved all the butterflies & playing in the little teepee. Our teens, 16 & 13, loved hiking, fire pit, exploring in the side-by-side & of course - the internet. We brought a ps4 & our Amazon fire sticks. I recommend that if your kids use that stuff to stay connected. The internet, considering the remoteness of the location, worked great for everything & the Wi-Fi range was everywhere we needed it. I can’t say enough about what we called the back patio area where the firepit seating is. The view down to the town of Cody is amazing. Yes, there were a couple nights the wind was too much to enjoy a fire - but we were definitely able to on other evenings. We had brought our ‘cornhole’ board set from home & set those up to play on the patio area as well. The owner is amazing - communication was always available. The owners have ample campfire seats in the house that we were able to use. The built in seating area around the firepit is perfect. Sunrises w/coffee were amazing. Star gazing, amazing! Our kids asked what the cloudy line area was in the night sky on one of our first nights - they had not really ever seen the Milky Way! The reviews on the drive up the mountain being quite the trek are right. After the first up/down though, it gets easier. So much more!

Postcard Perfect!
Our group of 7 adults each gave this stay a 10/10! The views were beyond amazing and an experience unlike one we’ve ever had. They’re not kidding though when they say a 4WD is necessary. I would add a high clearance 4WD would be best but oh, so worth the 40 minute drive up the mountain. Make your grocery list and check it more than twice lol. I can attest that we all slept well and can say the master bedroom mattress was amazing! We would have loved to have had a kitchen table to gather around, but the countertop seating was sufficient. Pack warm clothes…we had sleet on July 6th!! It’s much colder up there than we expected but we were comfy in our sweats gathered around the outdoor fire pit. I have already recommended this cabin on the mountain to someone planning a trip out West Thank you for allowing our family to share your home to make memories we will never forget.

Beautiful cabin, location and views.
The cabin is beautiful and the views from the mountain top are spectacular. The cabin is well maintained, modern, and comfortable. The accommodations were excellent. Our only concern was that the access road up the mountain is quite steep, treacherous and laden with large rocks, ruts and stones. The online description says, "This is a mountain road with switch backs and steep inclines, Truck/SUV required to get to the property" but this understates the condition of the road. It takes 40 minutes to travel the 6-7 mile journey up and down the mountain and a high clearance vehicle is definitely required. We were fortunate to have dry conditions, but the road would be virtually inaccessible during rain or wet conditions. Property manager, Erin, was extremely accommodating, considerate and helpful. She was readily accessible by email and text for any question.

Breathtaking views
The views are unbeatable and the house was from a story book and would highly recommend this house to couples who want a getaway of seclusion and romance . It’s a prefect honeymoon spot . The road makes sure you’re not coming and going. Makes you enjoy the environment around you. Definitely need a 4 wheel drive truck to get up but after that you want regret it.

Amazing views, 5 miles up the mountain takes 25-30 minutes w a suv or 4wd. Road up is very narrow and down right dangerous. Once up house is great, fire pit amazing, it was too windy for us to enjoy it though. great hiking areas.

Secluded and relaxing
We loved it here. The road is rough. We come from the country so we are used to dirt roads. This road is more than that. We drove a GMC Yukon with 4 wheel drive and clearance was questionable in places. It took 35 minutes each way. It’s about 4 miles off the main road. That being said if you want to see beautiful views and relax this is the place for you. The drive made us just stay and relax since we didn’t want to make it more than once a day. Close to so many things. We spent a day in Yellowstone. Cody is a great town. We were not disappointed. There was a small issue. That was a complete fluke. We got a hold of Erin. She was friendly and quick to resolve everything. She was great! I would highly recommend staying here. It was a great experience.

Perfect for a quiet getaway
This house and property are stunning. I recommend this to people who want a quiet getaway, and who don’t necessarily have plans that require them to leave the place daily - both because of the drive, and because you’ll want to stay and fully appreciate what’s here. I don’t know if I would stay again, but only because the drive up the mountain was so rough and crazy. Despite the drive, it was the most beautiful and relaxing place. It’s quiet, absolutely gorgeous, and you feel on top of the world. We had some unexpected situations during our stay, but every time I contacted the host, she responded quickly and made sure things got taken care of. Our purpose for staying was to spend time in Yellowstone. It was more drive time than we would have liked to get to the entrance, but overall it worked out well for us and we were happy with our stay.

Interesting
The house is good and the furniture is good quality. The views are terrific. The road is your worst nightmare. We had a full size GMC 4 wheel drive and had to do 4 miles an hour or less in places. The off road vehicles are ruining the road. It took 30-40 minutes each time. We only went up and down once a day. There is really only one bedroom, one closet, and one dresser. The other places to sleep are just a day beds, a pullout couch and a futon. There were no top sheets for any beds, no extra linens or pillows for the futon or pullout couch. The outside propane grill was broken and people were using it as a charcoal grill. I messaged the owner who said they would try to replace the grill. They did not. I also messaged her about the linens and never received a reply. The master bedroom had toenail clippings all over the floo from previous renters. The sewer gas was so bad two nights we could not use the downstairs bathroom.

Great stay
This is our 2nd time staying here. We love the privacy, the diverse weather on top of the mountain. According to my wife we are about 5,000 feet higher than the town of Cody below. Much cooler up top. Love the ride up and down. We rented a side by side polaris ranger in town at tread and trails next to the Walmart and that made getting up and down much easier. We also explored the mountain going to the very top with a million dollar view of the entire lake and Noth and south fork views toward yellowstone. Great outdoor space for my son and dogs. Plan to be back again!

The four mile drive up to the house is scary, we had a Ford Expedition and it was 4 miles an hour to go up and down! They said two queen but the down stairs has trundle bed. The house is beautiful! There is a p trap issue with sewer gas down stairs! It was an experience but we would probably not go back.

Cool mountain top home
The house and it’s deck are beautiful. They could add more sleeping area, the double beds aren’t double beds. The kitchen could add a small dining table so that kids can sit as well. In the instructions they could specify that you MUST drive an SUV with sufficient clearance. The other amenities like warm water, clean silverware, kitchen appliances and laundry are in good condition. Owner should add dead bolt to both doors of the property. Overall we really enjoyed our stay.

Good but could be great!
There were a few minor hiccups that could be easily fixed, and based on the response from the property management I’m sure they will. The warning about the road up is legitimate, you need a 4WD but we enjoyed it. There aren’t deadbolts on the doors, that needs to be addressed. The cabin itself is beautiful and the views are second to none. I gave it 4 stars, but it could be 5 stars easily.

Not what you're expecting
Two days prior to the scheduled Sunday arrival at the home we had not received any information from Erin. I messaged her & called the numbers listed…nothing. Within hours of flying our family across the country I began looking for other accommodations. NOT what we should be doing when I spent LOTSof $$$ on this home. Late Saturday afternoon someone that works with Erin finally returned my call. She gave me the code to enter the house and no other info. I flew to Cody with a post-it note having a number that we were told “should work”. Horrible way to start a vacation. We were in the house for 2 days before Erin bother to respond to me. Things we enjoyed about the home: The view is amazing! Be prepared for wicked winds coming over the mountain. There was a buck that seems to stay in the yard and was fun to watch each night. Nice area to go walking and exploring around the house. Master bedroom is very spacious. The listing has amazing photos and vague descriptions. I found them to lead to us to make assumptions that were false. Here are some things you should know: - The road is VERY VERY ROUGH!!! The 3 mile trail up the mountain will take you at least 35 minutes and you will need 4 wheel drive. In a full size Expedition, we used the 4x4 and hill decent every time. - Most rentals have a book with information about the home, how to use fireplaces, where to find things, etc. NOTHING at this house! - There is no tv in the common family areas. Not the living room, not the first floor bar/kitchen area. - There is a nice fire pit, however all the signs at the bottom of the mountain clearly state NO FIRES. - The listing shows photos of the reservoir. You cannot access that view as the gates just beyond the house state “No Trespassing, Dangerous Area, Trespassers will be Prosecuted”. - The floors were dirty in the kitchen area and it’s like being outside. - There is no air conditioning or fans. We arrived to temps of 91 degrees and the house was so hot!! We went to Walmart and bought 3 fans. - Listing states a grill. It was in pieces and no way useable. - Sheets were a joke. Master bed had only a flat sheet as the bottom and no top sheet. Twin beds on 2nd floor had only fitted sheets. - Dining area listed is only the stools at the high top bar. Beware if you have younger children there is no table for them to sit at. -Drainage issues in the master shower and a sewer smell at times.

Beautiful place but a few issues...
The listing is accurate for this property. The house is beautifully rustic in design & decor. The outside views (whether you’re standing outside or looking out the windows from inside the house) are breathtaking! They are truly awesome! However, there are 2 issues with this property that potential customers should pay heed to. First, there is a constant foul smell on the 1st floor that is really bad. The house has 3 stories. The kitchen, a small bedroom, a full bathroom and the laundry room are on the first floor. The living room area is in the 2nd floor, and the master bedroom and bath are on the 3rd floor. The smell is very noticeable on the 1st floor and makes being in the kitchen area unpleasant. It is not noticeable on the 2nd & 3rd floors. Secondly, the road up the mountain is unpaved and ROUGH! It is rocky and narrow (single lane). Make sure your vehicle has enough bottom clearance and be prepared that you may have to pass vehicles on the way up or down. The road is about 5 miles to the top and took us about 30-35 minutes to make it up to the house. Overall, we did enjoy our stay. The road situation is what it is. Hopefully, the odor issue can be resolved. It is a beautiful place!

VIEWS+++
There are some caveats to this property, but if you are interested in great views it will be almost impossible to top these. Cons: The road up to the house is terrifying the 1st time you ascend - but by the 2nd day we didn't mind. You will need a high clearance vehicle, 4x4 is nice but high clearance more important. It takes about 25 minutes to get up/down the mountain. Smell - the house has a bit of a smell on lowest level of house; we assume it's because of the septic/water system required up here. There are tons of screened windows so it wasn't a problem per se; we felt like it was a better option than an outhouse. Not noticable on 2nd/3rd floors. The Master bedroom is great, but the other bedroom on bottom floor is very small/no windows. The 2nd floor has a couple of pull-out beds. This layout would be great for a couple or a family of 3-6. Pros: the views. holy cow the views are off the charts. Stars are amazing up there as well, but imagine morning coffee from a patio that allows you to see 20 miles in 3 directions. The patio/firepit is very nice, the home interior is very nice/rustic, appliances are nice. We had a group of 9 and we never ran out of water, but we were mostly gone during the daytime so idk. There is wildlife on the property (grouse/chicks/Bucky the Deer, rabbits) which the kids really enjoyed seeing each morning. You can hike up the mountain (or drive) for more views. Overall, if you are looking for a rustic cabin with amazing views for your small family, this property is hard to beat.

Relaxing Getaway
Listing was accurate. This property is on top of the mountain with great views in every direction. We were very secluded, and the kids were free to play. Everything was clean. We really enjoyed our stay. Next time I will bring a 4X4 SUV or Truck. The mini-van made the journey, but low clearance underneath and traction was an issue coming up the mountain. Overall, we would definitely recommend this property.

The property had no water, we had to check into a hotel after a day, no refund!!! Beware!
The house gets its water by a 1500 gallon cistern, which ran out about an hour after we arrived on Saturday. Erin told us that she had ordered an emergency delivery on Sunday morning. But since the company that delivers the water is closed on Sunday, I didn't see it showing up anytime soon. The property and the view is beautiful, but a house without water makes it unhealthy and unlivable. We couldn't cook, do dishes, shower or flush the toilets. We were reduced to brushing our teeth with bottled water and going to the bathroom in the woods. When the water truck did not show up in a timely manner, we could not risk coming back to the property in the evening to a house with no water. Nor could we wait around all day to see if the truck would show up. So, we checked into a hotel in town and requested a full refund. Erin's response: I apologize for the problems. I have forwarded your message onto the owners for review, once approved we will process your refund. That was two week ago and still no refund. I never spoke to Erin, she did not call me and would not answer her phone. She only wanted to communicate through text and VRBO messages. One more thing, in the listing it says this: **This is a mountain road with switch backs and steep inclines, Truck/SUV required to get to the property** This is an understatement. 3.5 miles will take you 30-45 minutes. Very narrow roads on shear cliffs. The road also has very large rocks that you have to drive over which knock you around. We drove a Ford F150 4WD and it was tough. Don't do this in a SUV with low clearance or you could bottom out. If you are planning on doing multiple things in Cody and going back to the house regularly, this in not the place for you. If you do decide to rent this place: 1. Check the cistern to see how much water you have. 1500 gallons is not that much for 9 people if everyone is showering regularly. Another reviewer ran out of water, so this is not a unique situation. 2. The "coffee maker" is a Keurig with no pods. Either bring your own coffee maker or bring Keurig pods. We improvised with bottled water, paper towel and a strainer. 3. Check everything when you arrive. Do not count on your host. You are on your own. I gave the place 1 star for cleanliness. The house was very clean when we arrived, but with no water for dishes or toilets, things begin to deteriorate.
