Interesting 'Cuach Cottage': Constructed from local stone using local skills and dry bedding technique. Some internal walls are 3 ft. wide whilst others are 2 ft.
It has a conventional pitched slated roof which is now highly insulated.
To the rear, their remains the shell of a stone constructed sheep's pen. Livestock would have been housed close to the dwelling back in the day.
Al Fresco Dining: To the rear of the cottage is an elevated 8 seater outdoor dining set. Set upon a traditional pebbled and fenced patio area. BBQ here on a summer's day and you are in heaven, beautiful fresh water river running alongside, 12 Ben Mountain range so close you feel you could touch them, natural lake land and Connemara terrain right in front of you. Your outstanding views are not obstructed !! To the front of the cottage we have located a 6 seater dining bench. This offers the visitor a choice of 2 outdoor dining locations. Best of both worlds, as the sun moves from East to West. Located in the garden and beside the fresh water river is a 3 seater hand made bench where one can while away some hours, reading, sketching or indeed just taking in the scenery.
Inside the traditional fireplace is 'inglenook' type, however, this has been converted to suit a wood burning stove. In days gone by all family meals were cooked over this hearth.
Local harvested turf was the common source of fuel . The fire would sit directly on the floor in traditional manner using all the skills necessary to maintain it, lighting 24 hours per day. Most homesteads had their own plot of bog land. Plots till exist to this day alongside.
We have installed a hand crafted entrance door, 1/2 by 1/2 last year made by a local craftsman, thanks Pat.
Interior fixtures, some from Count De Vesci's estate in Laois are present in 'Cuach Cottage'
