Solar powered lake cottage with dock on private 300 acre preserve

Note: This small cottage is secluded and OFF-GRID. Solar power is dependent on sunlight.

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms.”

― Henry David Thoreau, Walden: Or, Life in the Woods

Welcome to Soudan Cottage. This modern, off-grid retreat combines private and secluded lake access featuring a state-of-the-art dock, two coves and a large pine forest teeming with natural visual beauty and wildlife. Ten minutes from the charming, lakeside town of Clarksville, VA, and a 90 minute drive from Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill, NC, the cottage is ideal for a short sabbatical, a romantic weekend, or an outdoorsman's getaway. Best suited for one or two people. If you'd like more time to read, talk, think and relax; if you cherish a brisk walk in the woods or a cool dip in a placid lake; if you seek a night sky full of stars and the sound of crickets, then you've found the right place. Soudan Cottage might be best understood by what it isn't. It isn't a place stocked with television sets, video games, telephones, stereos and computers. You can bring those things if you need them, but otherwise you'll have just the basics here, and maybe a little lower blood pressure.

The eco-friendly cottage, constructed in 2013 by contractor Steve Storm, mixes contemporary design and amenities with antique furnishings and Americana charm. Every inch of the 700 square feet is efficiently utilized with nothing wasted. Soudan Cottage was sited and designed with sustainability and a simpler, more relaxed existence in mind. Solar panels cover the southern roof line and store energy in hand made battery lockers. Ceramic tile floors throughout the downstairs kitchen, bath, and sitting area provide natural cooling in warm weather. Pine flooring in the upstairs bedroom/study offers comfort year round. In winter months, two wall mounted propane heaters -one in the bathroom- warm the entire cabin efficiently. A new air conditioning system was installed in 2018 which can be run during the day but may drain the batteries overnight. A backup generator can provide power if the sun is insufficient. It was situated to take advantage of prevailing summer breezes aided minimally by small fans. Cool night air can be circulated through the cottage's 13 windows via the upstairs ceiling fan.

The kitchen minimizes waste with an energy efficient refrigerator, and a propane powered oven and range.

Kitchen and bathroom water flows through a natural gravity system featuring a 100-gallon tank in the nearby pump house. An easy-to-read energy monitor in the kitchen displays how much solar power is stored, and how much is being transferred, so that usage can be managed smartly according to the time of day and the current weather conditions. The cottage utilizes a modern septic system and deep well.

The property, which includes 300+ acres of pine and mixed forest and more than 1000 feet of secluded shoreline access on Buggs Island Lake (Kerr Lake), is one of the largest lake forest tracts in the mid-atlantic region of the United States. Located five miles from the Lake Country regional airport in Mecklenburg County, VA, you can be casting a line into the renowned tournament fishing waters of Kerr Lake within minutes of landing. Hunters will find deer, turkey, rabbit, and other game abundant in the private forest and the adjoining Corp of Engineers easement land. And nature lovers in need of a respite from the city will enjoy seemingly endless natural trails ideal for hiking, cycling, or bird watching.

Come to the woods, 21st century style.

Exactly what we needed
If you read and loved the description of this place, you will, indeed, love this place. It's exactly what's advertised and it has been the perfect getaway for my husband and me twice now. Its a gorgeous location with ample fishing, reading, lazing opportunities. The cabin is adorable, the bed is comfy, the fire pit is awesome! There's so much to love about this place. We will be back every time we get the opportunity.

Lake time
Great retreat to peace and quiet. Beautiful little cottage with everything we needed. Spent the majority of our time enjoying the outside, wether it was kayaking on the lake or sitting around the fire pit. We’ll definitely be going back!!

absolutely amazing
Our stay was absolutely amazing! I enjoyed no cell service! We had a lot of fun with our floats we brought to relax on the water! My dog even enjoyed running wild and playing in the water. We for sure will be return guests. It was very close to our family we were there to visit in Oxford, NC. The only thing was having a hard time finding the dumpster since the one by the airport isn’t there anymore.

Maximum tranquility and peace!
If you want to truly get away from it all, including cell service, this is the place. We heard and saw no one for the first two days of our stay (Wed & Thurs.). On Friday and Saturday morning, several boats of fisherman came by. Our two dogs were in heaven being off leash. No TV, no phones, no internet...just stars, sounds of nature (heron, osprey, woodpeckers, fish jumping, owls, bats). Cabin is small but cozy and comfortable. No generator use during our stay which was great!

A new tradition!
We were expecting bare bones with this stay and we couldn’t have been more wrong! Wow! This place is a hidden gem! I actually considered not saying how amazing this place was, so word doesn’t spread ; ) It only took one day on our stay here to vow we would come back as long as the owner allows. Truly an amazing experience!

a truely special and intimate cabin
This is my second stay at this beautiful, very private remote property. The cabin is tidy and neat. The property is well kempt and you feel off the grid. A wonderful space to read, paint, reflect, fish, swim, enjoy the outdoors and escape from the distractions of life in the rat race. Whether you are traveling alone or with friends or family, anticipate quiet down time and relaxation and be patient. You will be surprised at the peace and clarity you will find.

What a beautiful private place.
The house is as advertised. You are alone in the woods and the lovely walk to the dock where swimming and fishing is wonderful. The split aspect is easy to understand and if you are going in the summer, swim in the lake to cool off! The dogs loved it, a little too much. The poison ivy and bugs ( ticks) are around, but stay on paths and prevent dogs from wondering in the woods and you will find a little piece of heaven. The owner is wonderful and the place is perfect if you want to be completely off the grid. What a great stay we had!!

Like getting a massage. . .
You know that stressful knotted shoulder before a talented masseuse breaks it all up and leaves you completely refreshed and rejuvenated? That was us, pups included, before this disconnection from all those things that caused the knots to begin with. A wonderful almost off grid place to relax, reconnect, and forget for a while. Amenities are structured to perpetuate deep breathing, inner reflection, and a love of nature. Cast your cares away in the lake and pull out a fish for dinner. Walk along the paths, listen to the birds and watch how happy your pups are. Sit by the firepit with a glass of wine and enjoy a toasted marshmallow. Thank-you Mr. Tarry for the wonderful place to stay! Sherri & Dave (River & Kally)

Amazing getaway from it ALL
My 9 year old son and I drove 4 hours to stay here and it was worth every minute on the drive. The home is so neat! My son absolutely loved it. The house is solar powered. Its newer but with original decor/antiques. There were a lot of personal touches. Loved the theme, too. The house had everything we needed for a nice stay. It is a very short walk through the woods to get to the private dock & waterfront. We enjoyed the built-in fire pit too! The bed is comfortable. We loved sleeping with the windows open at night to hear all the nature sounds. We had 0 cell and wifi service but thats what I was looking for. It was nice to get away and re-connect with my son after working 60 days straight and being cooped up inside our home. We loved it so much we immediately booked another weekend in the Fall. Having had a 2nd home with little nearby amenities I would suggest some things if you're going to visit. By no means is this a complaint to the owners. These are just the things we like from home that we always bring. Some of them may be there - bathmat or towel to step on out of the shower - extra clothes & towels - dish & hand soap - extra toilet paper, trash bags and paper towels. - spices you need for cooking including oils, butter, spray oil - any special pans you need for cooking. They do have frying pans and saucepans. We could have used a larger pot to boil water for pasta but we made do. -disposable plates & silverware so you can relax -sheets for the bed + a flat sheet for a sofa -bath towels -our own bed comforter -bring all of the groceries you need! I dont know if there is a grocery store, its very rural there. -charcoal for the grill -firewood if you dont want to go through the forest to find wood (this was fine & worked for us) -bug spray -make sure your dogs have tick meds on! -music! there's no wifi or cell service so... -I didnt see a coffee pot. I did see a french press. So if you like coffee, bring that. I did bring instant coffee and it worked great -print or take screenshots of the directions and codes to access the keys. You will lose service about 15 minutes away from the house. You'll want to plug the fridge in right away. We didnt have to start anything in the house for the solar-electricity. We did use a heater, the instructions are on the heater itself. This should help give you a heads start for a great time! Thanks to the owners!! -

If you want to get away from it all, no phone, no TV this is it. Small walk to the fishing pier and bait shop is close by. Remote Cabin Anniversary
Very remote, which is what we wanted. The Cabin was quaint and perfect size for 2 plus dog. Loved the trail to the dock and all the surrounding woods. We enjoyed quiet reflective time for reading, but also the Lake was awesome for kayaking and fishing. Weather was a little rough but still had a chance to enjoy the firepit and cook out. Overall, very nice place and may be looking to return in the fall when it is cooler.

If you are in need of a little break from the city to unplug and relax, this is a perfect spot for you. The house was more than enough for the two of us and our pup.
