Chatham Village: Charming 3 Room Apartment in Antique Home

** SHIP'S LIGHT IS CURRENTLY UNDERGOING A MAJOR RENOVATION! Having stood the test of time for almost 200 years, the house is now mostly gutted, awaiting a new foundation, upgraded systems and a modified floor plan. We hope to begin renting again later in 2024, when the house is ready for the next 200 years! In the meantime, we will post updates here and will look forward to hosting you again soon! **

Ship’s Light has looked down Cross Street to Chatham Village Center for more than 180 years. Built and occupied by some of Chatham’s most eminent residents since 1825, it was converted to four housekeeping apartments for summer visitors circa 1945. Lovingly restored by long-time current owners, this gracious antique home offers modern comfort and convenience with the character and charm of a bygone era.

The 'Lillian Spohn' apartment is on the 2nd floor and has 3 rooms with a flexible layout--perfect for a couple or a family of three vacationing on a budget. Accommodates 2 adults and 1 child easily. The large eat-in kitchen is light and airy with full-sized appliances and seating for 4. The bedroom has a comfortable double and twin bed, while the living room has a pull-out couch, for additional sleeping accommodations. The living room also has additional seating, cable TV. Wi-Fi is available throughout the house. There is an indoor half bath (no indoor shower) and a fully-enclosed outdoor shower for the exclusive use of Lillian Spohn renters. The shower is conveniently located at the base of the outside stairs leading to the apartment. Robes are provided.

We realize that many travelers not familiar with the tradition of Cape Cod outdoor showers may think this arrangement is odd. On Cape Cod, we think that taking a shower inside in the summer is odd! Why would you want to track sand and salt into your house and steam it up taking a shower when you can take a perfectly lovely shower outside?

As you drive or walk around the beautiful older parts of Chatham, if you look carefully you may notice that almost every house has an enclosed outdoor shower. At our house, about 1 mile from Ship's Light, we have two indoor showers which are barely used in the summer--but we stand in line to use the outdoor shower. So we invite you to embrace the Cape Cod tradition when you stay in the Lillian Spohn apartment; we think you will like it!

A small covered upstairs deck, side yard and gas grills are also available for renters; shared use of a washing machine and dryer is available in the garage.

Centrally located within a short walking distance of excellent Chatham dining, shopping, movies and band concerts, the house is three blocks from the town salt water beach on Oyster Pond, and one mile from Coast Guard Beach, a great stretch of Atlantic Ocean and dunes. Many individuals, couples and extended families consider Ship’s Light their vacation home. We invite you to join them in making your vacation something special.

The Lillian Spohn apartment at Ship’s Light is rented for 3-night minimum stays during the summer and shoulder seasons. Other units with unique features are also available and the whole house can be rented as a 5-to-6 bedroom home for family gatherings.

A great time at Ship's Light
We had a wonderful time in the apartment and loved the neighborhood in Chatham. We have stayed on the Cape for over four decades of summers and this was the first time we stayed in Chatham. wonderful location and the accomodations were cozy and comfortable. We very much hope to be back again next year.

Great vacation and EVEN BETTER house
We loved our stay at Ship’s Light! We were in the Lillian Spohn apartment and it was SO cute! Everything was provided for us, towels, blankets, sheets, coffee filters, soap… so much that we didn’t even use 1/4 of it. The bed was very comfortable and lots of extra pillows and blankets. I read a bunch of the reviews before hand about the outdoor shower so we knew that was what we were using while there. We had ZERO issues with the shower, very clean, the water got nice and hot the whole time, there were plenty of shelves to put things on and even a seat! I saw someone mention there was no place for all the shower items so I brought a little shower caddy (like in college) but there was no need for it because they left one in there for us to use. We cooked dinner and breakfast and the kitchen had all the pots and pans we could need. The AC kept the apartment nice and cool and they even had a bunch of fans set up and more in the closet if you need it. My husband was obsessed with the relaxing blue chair in the kitchen, it was his favorite spot to sit and drink his coffee in the morning, and hang out in after we returned from the beach for the day. We had a question about something and Allison was super quick to answer us (within minutes of me sending her a message). The house is blocks away from the main strip in Chatham, and it’s about a 9 minute drive from Harding’s Beach. Overall, we had a wonderful vacation and plan on making it a yearly trip to stay at Ship’s Light.

Awesome location
The price for the location is wonderful. The place is a little worn and a little musty. The bed was comfortable, and the kitchen was well stocked. The bathroom is in the kitchen (with the shower outside) The outside shower was small, with no place to put clothes, but robes are provided and the water was hot super fast. I'd call it above average but not awesome.

Great location
Walking distance to Main St. Chatham. Walking distance to two beaches (pond / ocean). Lillian Spohn apartment was great. Just be careful if you are on the taller side. You might hit your head on the door jambs inside. A/C unit in kitchen and fans in every room. Very comfortable inside!

Wonderful stay for relaxing vacation
Everything exceeded our expectations. Descriptions of the property and the apartment were spot on. Location was perfect - walking distance to Chatham Main Street with restaurants, shopping and Chatham windmill. Oyster Pond beach is nearby and walkable, small but perfect for building sand castles and swimming.

So Near Downtown Chatham!
The location is excellent. An older apartment , not fancy but has charm and suited our needs. Was not sure about the outdoor shower but worked out, had a campy feel. We didn't spend a lot of Time on this visit in Chatham but a great preview for future visits.

Perfect place for us!
My two friends and I needed a place to stay for a weekend trip and this was perfect for us. Definitely cozy; we were very comfortable as three petite able-bodied women, but those that are very tall or mobility impaired would probably not be so comfortable as you need to go up stairs to enter and the ceilings are low (with roof lines). A+ location, it's on a quiet side street right off the main strip of Chatham so we could walk to everything in town. It was very clean and well stocked- it had everything we needed. The TV is an old tube TV, so if you plan to watch movies/TV before bed or something I'd suggest bringing a laptop/tablet. Overall it was excellent, I would totally stay here again and recommend it to others.

Very convenient place
Place was less than a block from Chatham town center, but still quiet. I like to run in the mornings, and there were several small roads around where I could easily get a decent workout in. We generally don't stay inside much when we travel so we didn't spend a lot of time in the place, but it definitely met our needs, especially with 2 kids (less than 10 years old). If you're tall, watch your head when you go to the bedroom.

Lovely location
We love Cape Cod. Chatham is a beautiful town, and the location was perfect for walking to both downtown and the Oyster Pond. I didn’t give it a 5 star, as I left a vm on the first night, and never got a call back from the owners. The cottage was neat, nothing extreme, small, but cozy. I don’t think it is disinfected after each use, as it requires you to clean yourself after stay. Thank you for having us.

Great location!
Just steps away from the Main Street shops and restaurants. Also, Chatham is so central to the Cape, we made lots of day trips. The apartment was very cozy and had what we needed. A couple of suggestions and this is only because we had down time due to weather, upgraded satellite TV and a listing guide of what channels you get would have been nice ( took a lot of searching and very limited channel selection). Also, the couch is not very comfy to sit on for a long period of time. Other than that, we had a wonderful visit and hope to return!

Great location
This is a great location for exploring the area on foot. It was roomier than I expected also, with a living room and a kitchen separated by the bedroom with a double and a twin bed. I would have preferred an indoor shower, but my husband didn’t mind and my son liked it. The kitchen was equipped well enough to prepare many meals at home. I was glad that we were able to stay here the entire time of my husband’s work rather than the Saturday to Saturday that many Cape rentals require. We had a good time walking and exploring the area!

Best Anniversary Yet!
Lovely cozy place for our 25th anniversary! Quiet, well equipped kitchen. Close enough to National Seashore Park to go daily for splendid hikes and beach walks. Easy walk to main street. Now I want a comfy chair in my kitchen like yours. It was so nice to read in, while waiting for things to cook. One of us liked the outdoor shower, even using it by flashlight after dark.Thank you for a lovely stay!

Did not read description accurately
Completely our fault but we did not realize there was no shower in this unit. They do have an outdoor shower, however it was in the 50’s this weekend. We ended up finding a hotel to stay at instead. Great location, clean, but very outdated furniture and no shower.... not sure how anyone would want to rent a unit with no shower... All our fault though! Next time we will read descriptions better

Comfortable home base for cape vacation
This property is within very easy walking distance of the downtown area of Chatham, which seems to be a nicer downtown than any I have seen in the Cape. It is also a very short drive to the visitor center for the Monomoy Wildlife Refuge, a beautiful place. The apartment itself is very comfortable and functional. The owner was quite responsive to one issue we reported. I would be happy to go back.

This property was the home base for a great trip to the Cape. The Colemans were great hosts. The apartment is cozy, but very adequate for a couple's trip. One note, that ceiling is low in places, I'm 6'6" and whacked my head once or twice. The location is great as well. Short walk into the heart of Chatham and easy access to surrounding beaches and towns. Finally, the availability of grills and laundry in the garage was super!
