Description and History:
174 Saint Philip Street, Unit 1 - The Emma McCall House
The land (lot 33) on which this remarkable building was constructed was acquired by John Jochim Bulow in 1834 from the Rowland Rugely (1734-1776) estate. Bulow, a prosperous merchant and planter, owned extensive real estate holdings on the peninsula. Bulow’s son, Thomas Lehre Bulow, inherited the house in 1841. Following the death of Mr. Thomas Bulow in 1859, his executor sold the house to Emma McCall. Mrs. McCall, a restaurant owner and baker, was a free person of color. She and her family occupied the house until 1863.
Constructed in 1834, this Charleston single house, now known as the Emma McCall House, included the unique and charming architectural characteristics of this construction style: One room wide and multiple rooms deep, oriented with the narrow side facing the street, The house features full length piazzas providing outdoor living space and shade to cool the house, tall ceilings, large and plentiful windows arranged symmetrically on the facades, steep gabled roofs and the iconic side facing street door.
This is not a typical short-term rental; it is not a renovated dependency or a newly constructed unit in an old neighborhood, nor is it situated on a tiny lot in a questionable or remote area. The old hardwood floors, tall ceilings, original moldings, plasterwork, windows and doors exude a special warmth, character, and charm that that is very difficult to achieve in new construction. The exterior copper roof and guttering provide additional warmth and character.
