Description and History:

174 Saint Philip Street, Unit 1 - The Emma McCall House

The land (lot 33) on which this remarkable building was constructed was acquired by John Jochim Bulow in 1834 from the Rowland Rugely (1734-1776) estate. Bulow, a prosperous merchant and planter, owned extensive real estate holdings on the peninsula. Bulow’s son, Thomas Lehre Bulow, inherited the house in 1841. Following the death of Mr. Thomas Bulow in 1859, his executor sold the house to Emma McCall. Mrs. McCall, a restaurant owner and baker, was a free person of color. She and her family occupied the house until 1863.

Constructed in 1834, this Charleston single house, now known as the Emma McCall House, included the unique and charming architectural characteristics of this construction style: One room wide and multiple rooms deep, oriented with the narrow side facing the street, The house features full length piazzas providing outdoor living space and shade to cool the house, tall ceilings, large and plentiful windows arranged symmetrically on the facades, steep gabled roofs and the iconic side facing street door.

This is not a typical short-term rental; it is not a renovated dependency or a newly constructed unit in an old neighborhood, nor is it situated on a tiny lot in a questionable or remote area. The old hardwood floors, tall ceilings, original moldings, plasterwork, windows and doors exude a special warmth, character, and charm that that is very difficult to achieve in new construction. The exterior copper roof and guttering provide additional warmth and character.

Saint Philip Square:
Saint Philip Square is an award-winning collection of historic buildings meticulously curated to enhance your stay in Charleston. “M1” is one of seventeen unique rentals. The grounds feature five special outdoor garden areas with fountains, dining areas, fire pits and covered barbecues. In the evenings, this oasis sparkles with outdoor lighting, making it the perfect place for nightcaps after a day of exploring.

Your unit at Saint Philip Square includes a piazza-style private porch overlooking gorgeous, landscaped gardens. With comfortable seating, it’s ideal for a morning cup of coffee or a
restful break between city adventures.

Study the area map and you will see our property shares a common border with Charleston’s famous King Street, renowned for shopping, dining, and nightlife. You are as close as it gets to King Street. With a large, landscaped lot you can rest assured your vehicle is nearby.

Our local on-site team is dedicated to ensuring your experience is as meaningful as it is memorable.

Neighborhood:
Saint Philip Square is situated adjacent to Charleston’s renowned King Street along the southern boundary of Cannonborough. Our property provides unrivaled access to King Street’s premier shopping, dining, and entertainment options. Within a two-block radius, you'll find over thirty restaurants offering international cuisines including French, Spanish, Italian, American, Mexican, Japanese, and Greek. This impressive selection doesn't even count the gourmet sandwich shops, coffee bars, pizza spots, oyster bars, wine bars, bakeries, ice creameries, or vibrant entertainment and music venues.

Charleston, like Rome, is unique in that its rich historical and cultural offerings are contained in a small, walkable area. Within a leisurely stroll, you'll discover the historic Charleston Battery, Broad and East Bay Street, Waterfront Park, the Four Corners of Law, historic churches and private homes, the Gibbes Museum of Art, the Charleston Museum, the Aiken-Rhett House, the Charleston Children's Museum, the Charleston Visitors Bureau, the College of Charleston, and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). All these locations are easily accessible in a thirty-minute walk--no to need move your car from our parking lot.

Don’t feel like walking? Take an Uber or Lyft or try a Pedicab or rickshaw. The Charleston Black Cab Limo is excellent for larger groups and you travel in luxury. In addition, the city provides free shuttle bus services utilizing its attractive DASH trolleys.

Want to explore further? We are two minutes by automobile to the main cross-town artery which easily connects to major highways making the Airport, Isle of Palms, Sullivans Island, Folly Beach, Mt. Pleasant, and Ashley River Plantations (Drayton Hall, Middelton Place, and Magnolia Gardens) readily assessable. By automobile, none of these locations exceeds a trip further than 25 minutes.

Whether you’re here for the history, the food, or the vibrant community, our location places you in the heart of it all.

Graduation weekend in Charleston
This property provided everything and more to be comfortable and social in the Cannonborough neighborhood of downtown Charleston. We walked to everything we needed (dining, shopping, College of Charleston, etc), and loved the common area of the courtyards and fountains to the rear of the property. Morning coffee on the porch beneath the hanging ferns was a highlight as well. We loved the ability to be both indoors and outdoors. The perfect stay!

We enjoyed the house because it was a nice communal of friendship after our days out. However the older homes lends itself to hearing your neighbors. Overall it was nice. Rooms are tight with small bathroom but expected for a 1836 home.

What a great property! Upon arrival, parking was easy and and finding our way to the property also was, the inside was decorated so thoughtfully and the amenities were very thorough as well, if someone forgot makeup wipes, they provided those in every bathroom with shampoo and conditioner as well, the beds were very comfortable with plenty of pillows to provide comfort. The courtyard was beautiful and was nice to enjoy an evening cocktail, we look forward to returning! Thank you for the wonderful hospitality!

Fantastic Location and Place
Great place in every way. The unit is updated and clean and nice! Full kitchen. Both bedrooms have big comfortable beds. Very clean and well kept. The communication was great and Jamie was helpful and very kind. Just a great place to stay. But the location is the best… great little coffee shop and a bakery within 100 yards. Bars and multiple restaurants within 200 yards. King St, which has everything from shopping to dining is one block over. The downtown old quarter is just a mile walk. A free bus shuttle runs every 20 minutes or so downtown as well, and the pickup spot is a 2 minute walk from the unit. We will stay here again for sure. It exceeded expectations!
