We had a great time staying in the farmhouse! The farm sits on a hillside overlooking Lake Leelanau, which you get a view of (along with trees and other scenery) from the front windows and porch. The owners are a couple who have put their heart and soul into the farm and house. The house is imaginatively decorated, with countless clever touches that you will still be discovering several days into your stay. It’s also quite comfortable, with modern air conditioning, beds, kitchen amenities, leather furniture etc. Staying on the farm is fun, and offers a unique experience compared to a “conventional” lake property. The animals are a delight – chickens, ducks and other fowl mill about the property while pigs and goats largely stick to their (spacious) pens. For foodies, or anyone interested in foods produced with great passion and care, the farm offers a selection of meats in addition to plenty of fresh eggs and produce. We tried the pork chops, bacon and sausage, all of which were terrific. The pork chops are about the best we’ve ever had.
Lake access can be had just a short walk down the hill to a dock, where we tied up a 17-foot ski boat with no problems. The lake bottom up to and beyond the dock is nice and sandy, with clear water that is about thigh-to-waist deep at the end of the dock. It’s a lovely swimming spot for all ages. Venturing out on the boat, we found large sandbars just to south. These provide a great spot to drop anchor and while away the afternoon in clear knee-deep water with a beautiful lake all around you.
We spent most evenings by a fire, at one of the two fire pits – one down by the lake, and another up the hill not far from a wooded area. Either one offers starry skies above, and a great way to end another fun day on the farm.
