Summary:
Welcome to “Carmel Tree House”
Here is a special home. Once upon a time, Joan Baez and Bob Dylan gave private concerts for their intimate friends in the downstairs living room. Entranced by profound lyrics and haunting melodies, guest gazed through towering glass windows as the tranquil forest whispered back to them. The same mythical forest will envelop your loved ones in its tranquility and quietude during your stay at this mid-century modern masterpiece by famed architect Marcel Sedletzky.
The Space:
“Carmel Tree House” sits on 1.3 acres of secluded hillside. It exists in total, beautiful harmony with the oak trees that surround it. In the afternoon, sunlight filters through winding, coiled branches, bespeckling the fallen leaves, the walkways, and the expansive private decks. At night, the trees will appear as shadowy silhouettes in moonlight and, no matter the hour, you’ll hear absolutely nothing except the sensual music of nature – the tiny footfall of a bird, the gentle trickle of rain on crackling leaves, the snap of a twig somewhere in the distance, whistling winds. Otherwise: utter stillness of a kind so rarely experienced in our modern world.
To envision “Carmel Tree House” accurately, one must almost picture a glass house. To describe only its “floor-to-ceiling windows” seems entirely inadequate in light of the fact that the windows – multiple tempered windows comprising numerous walls – really stretch from the floor of the downstairs level all the way up to the pitched redwood ceiling of the main level. Naturally, the light here is exquisite.
Standing in the kitchen – an open space with light wood cabinetry, white countertops, and stainless-steel appliances – you’ll be treated to views of the wooded canyon. Enjoying a meal at the dining room table, you’ll glimpse birds playing in the trees overhead. And downstairs, gathered around a custom fireplace in the same post-adobe style living room where, decades ago, two legends found peace and solace in the company of their friends, you’ll make your own new memories.
Slide open the glass door and step onto a wraparound deck – one of several gorgeous decks at “Carmel Tree House” – and experience the forest as one might experience the cinema. This deck has a small label on it that reads, “Meditation Spot.” Indeed, it is clear that this home was built as a place of rest and of reverence – a place of deep connection to nature, and to each other. It’s modern, yet intensely earthy.
Sedletzky himself built the hand-sewn redwood walls that feature in most rooms of “Carmel Tree House.” On the main level, find three (3) relaxing bedrooms and two (2) full bathrooms, one of which has a stone shower. The downstairs living room, accessed by cantilevered floating stairs, is almost entirely visible from the main level, enhancing the grandeur of the windows – and the views.
If you can bear to tear yourself away from this brilliant masterwork of a home, you’ll find that, despite the sense of welcome remoteness you feel at “Carmel Tree House,” you’re only minutes away from the conveniences of Carmel Rancho, the charms of downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea, and the Pacific Ocean. Easily access the wineries in Carmel Valley, the scenic hiking trails in Big Sur, or the iconic landmarks that line 17-Mile Drive in Pebble Beach.
