## Emplacement
With its 3 kilometers of ramparts and its 52 towers, the high city of Carcassonne, located on the right bank of the Aude, is the largest fortified city in Europe! Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the famous and impressive medieval city of Aude, admirably restored in the 19th century by the architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, is one of the most visited destinations in France.
Lovers of heritage and old stones, give yourself a treat by going to meet the built treasures of Carcassonne... The majestic Gallo-Roman and medieval fortifications that surround the city, the imposing Narbonnaise gateway flanked by two high towers, the 12th-century château comtal built under the Trencavel dynasty, which today houses a lapidary museum, the Saint-Nazaire basilica with its gothic statues and its splendid stained glasses of the XIIIth and XIVth centuries, or still the promenade des Lices nestled between the two enclosures of the city, are as many testimonies of the past to be savored during a stroll. The charming Place Marcou, with its shaded cafe terraces, and the picturesque streets, dotted with souvenir and craft shops, also punctuate the route.
From June to August, the Carcassonne festival offers classical music, opera, dance, circus arts, theater, French and international variety concerts... Don't miss the exceptional burning of the medieval city on July 14, and the chivalry tournaments in the lices in July and August.
