Step back in time while enjoying modern comforts at Jandon Cottage, a charming retreat built in 1924. Nestled on a peaceful hill overlooking the bay, this lovingly restored Newfoundland treasure invites you to relax, unplug, and make lasting memories.
Jandon Cottage has been well cared for over the years, and renovations were undertaken in 2020, including the finished sleeping loft in the attic, and a new, extended deck. We gave the cottage some fresh paint and design updates in 2024.
The space:
The cottage features 1 bedroom on the main floor. The attic has been converted into a sleeping loft to accommodate more guests - accessible by a set of narrow steps. Everything is comfy, cozy and you'll feel right at home. Perfect for a romantic couple's retreat, a girls' getaway, or even a solitary respite.
Guest access:
The cottage is solely for you and your guests during your stay, including a big deck where you can barbecue, sit out to enjoy your morning coffee as the sun rises over the bay, or stargaze in the evenings.
There is a parking space (currently being further excavated), or you can park along the front of the property along the grassy side of the road. Road traffic is fairly light, and you’re more likely to see local residents out for a stroll or a bike ride.
You will need a vehicle to explore or get to local amenities, restaurants, and retailers. Or maybe you prefer the water? Plenty of opportunity to kayak, too!
Other things to note:
Jandon is serviced by great, unlimited wifi internet, but does not have cable TV although there is a DVD player available, and it’s a Roku television so you can access your own Netflix or other similar accounts easily. With the recent installation of cell phone towers in the area, you will have cell service in this quiet hamlet. Or just turn off your devices... this can be your time to get away, relax and unplug.
There is a collection of puzzles, games, books and DVD movies.
The cottage is a on a little hill so a bit of a climb upon arrival which could be challenging for anyone with mobility issues. Once inside everything you need including the main bedroom is on the ground level. The loft bedroom is accessed up a narrow set of stairs.
Neighbourhood highlights:
Situated in the quiet hamlet of Port au Bras, Jandon Cottage is walking distance to the Tidal Wave Memorial (1929) with beautiful views and a touching tribute to those lost and an accounting of the tragic event. There are any number of quaint towns nearby to enjoy some local eats and shopping... or set off to explore them all on a road trip around the peninsula. Don't miss Smugglers Cove Roadhouse - the pub & grill open all year, and they're known for hosting some great events!
Marystown is about 20 minutes away where you can stock up on groceries (Sobeys, Food Basic, WalMart) and supplies (Canadian Tire, Home Hardware, Dollarama), or visit the local hangouts and restaurants.
Getting around:
You'll want a car to properly explore the area, but you'll also be able to enjoy hiking, cycling or kayaking. We've got information on all the best trails in the cottage for you, along with area maps.
