About this property

Entire place

You'll have the entire home to yourself and will only share it with other guests in your party.

Stone barn offering luxurious accommodation a short drive from Monpazier.

La Grange dans la foret is a huge 100 year old barn that forms not only a home for ourselves but also a spacious and extremely comfortable holiday gite situated in a quiet woodland setting a short drive from the amazing Bastide of Monpazier. The gite forms the lower part of half of the barn with part of our bedroom accommodation above.

Whether your ideal holiday is to relax in the private courtyard, visit the many local sights, watch the world go by from a town square or enjoy a picnic on the river bank, the variety of things to do in the area mean you can do a different thing every day.

Throughout we have tried to give the barn a homely contemporary decor which we hope you will enjoy. We have spent a long time choosing furniture in a typically French style and have tried to make it as comfortable as possible. It is all on one level with a very spacious kitchen diner with a range cooker, fridge freezer, kettle, toaster and a full comprehensive range of utensils and equipment, including a basic larder of staples. The kitchen is also equipped with dishwasher and a washing machine for the sole use of our guests.

Also within this lovely room is the lounge, it is a lovely sunny room and if you ‘do as the French do’ and keep the French doors closed during the day, the very thick stone walls will ensure the room will keep extremely cool in the summer. The lounge has a tv with video player with a variety of films (unfortunately not french tv). We also have a selection of books for you to enjoy while spending a quiet afternoon in the courtyard.

The large pretty bedroom has a king-sized bed with an orthopaedic mattress, and ample hanging and clothes storage. Leading from the bedroom is a luxurious bathroom which has a freestanding bath, separate shower, toilet and basin (Keith’s job in the UK was a kitchen and bathroom fitter so the shower is a good one!)

Both the lounge and bedroom have French doors that open on to a large sun filled walled courtyard that has a covered terrace with a table and benches for alfresco dining and gas BBQ, The courtyard is totally private also has comfortable lounger chairs and large sun shade (the perfect place for a quiet afternoon with a good book). An ideal place to enjoy the French sunshine!

We purchased this lovely old stone barn 12 years ago. It has taken us that long, during breaks from work and with the help from friends and family, to convert it into the home we enjoy today with comfortable accommodation for our guests. We are very proud of the result and hope our visitors find it as good a place to spend time to unwind as we do.

Guest access
The gite is totally self-contained with its own private courtyard. There is ample parking space outside of the courtyard. On receiving a confirmed reservation we will send a clear map giving directions. It is not difficult to find but the last thing you need at the end of a long journey is any difficulty in finding your holiday home.

To ensure the comfort of all of our guests (including those who suffer from allergies), please note we have a no pets policy for the La Grange dans la Foret gite (we do have a cat ourselves but she has never been allowed into the gite)

Interaction with guests
As we will live on-site during your stay we look after the gite ourselves we can ensure it is kept spotlessly clean. Whilst offering our guests complete privacy in the spacious courtyard we will be on hand if needed.
We hope you will find the barn well equipped with everything that you need. In addition to the usual kitchen basic larder ingredients we welcome our guests with a small welcome pack for your stay.

Local Area
We are a only a ten minute drive from the very popular and very well known Bastide village of Monpazier which has a variety of really good shops, typically French bars and many restaurants offering dining experiences ranging from pizza to fine dining. Monpazier has a large weekly market on Thursdays which is the ideal way to spend a morning either shopping or simply watching the world go by whilst enjoying a coffee at one of the cafes in the town square. During July and August Monpazier hosts numerous events including, in late July the annual nocturnal cycle race, and in August a two-day vide grenier, outdoor concerts, horse racing and an outdoor cinema. There are guided tours around the village which is an good way to learn about the history of the village..

Although there are many other beautiful places to visit in the Dordogne area, two of the most popular are the towns of Sarlat and Domme, both fantastic historical towns that offer a wealth of photo opportunities and perfect places to soak up the history. Sarlat has a large weekly market on Saturdays and has a wide variety of shops and restaurants. The square is the ideal place to watch the street entertainers whilst enjoying lunch.

If you love your garden a visit to Marqueyssac is a must! During August there is a weekly evening candlelit event with music which is very special.

A short drive from the barn is another smaller village of La Capel Biron which also has a small number of shops for essentials, plus a bar restaurant. The history of this little village is worth researching. La Capel Biron also boasts an activity centre where, for the more active, it is possible to enjoy activities such as swimming, crazy golf and a tree top adventure with zip wire.

There is an inland lake at Lougratte which is a good place to swim and relax on the surrounding beach. Alternatively swimming in the Dordogne river is popular as is the opportunity to canoe down the river, stopping off at the amazing riverside villages for a picnic as part of the day. Believe us, you do not have to be experienced in the art of rowing as going wrong is all part of the fun!

Château Biron is just one of many chateaux in the area to visit, and finally we must not forget the french wines,. Local vineyards are plentiful for sampling the local red wine of which there are too many to mention.

We are enthusiastic about the local area and hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.

Beautiful stone barn
Everything about our stay was wonderful. Beginning with the VRBO listing that was complete with information about accommodations, nearby village and things to do, to the hosts themselves. Everything was perfect about the guest house both inside and out. A peaceful quiet location and short drive to the charming village of Monpazier. I feel lucky to have found this gem.

September Break
The quiet (semi-remote) location, warm but not overbearing welcome from hosts, attention to detail in the finish of the property combined to make this a near-perfect late Summer holiday venue. We enjoyed just “being” at the Gite as well as visiting the nearby Bastide towns and a couple attractions helpfully recommended in the host’s information pack.

Such a beautiful gite!
We had the good fortune to stay at this lovely gite for two weeks May/June this year. The gite does not disappoint, it is exactly as the photographs show. The quality of the furnishings and amenities are excellent. Even beautiful embroidered bed linen, shows how the lovely hosts Christine and Keith have given attention to everything. Very peaceful and with the lovely private outside space was just what we wanted. Gorgeous places to visit in a spectacular area. Would highly recommend.

Just brilliant. Can't be faulted!
This property suited us right down to the ground. Chris and Keith were extremely helpful, informative, and friendly. They built their property up over the years from a derelict old barn with the help of their sons and local labour. Everything was immaculately clean. The rooms were spacious and comfortably furnished. Chris enjoys searching out French bric-a-brac and she has great taste when it comes to putting a room together. The kitchen is well equipped and to top it off they have installed a wonderful walk-in shower. There is a large private sitting-out space for the guests. The property is by the side of a wood. (This part of France is heavily wooded.) We enjoyed the total silence of the environment. We had initial difficulty in locating the place and we should have been less arrogant about our map reading abilities. Chris offered to pick us up in Monpazier and we thought we could find our way their. We couldn't. She cheerfully located us and guided us back to the property. I suspect she and Keith offer to show guests the road through the forest. Don't refuse the offer. Keith and Chris were there when we needed to ask for information but other than that they kept their distance. We very much enjoyed their property and their company. It was a privilege to stay under their roof.

Beautifully appointed accommodation and surrounds. We really appreciated the way we were made to feel at home in a stylish, beautiful setting; touches like the welcome pack, luxurious linens and superb bathroom and kitchen - all spotlessly clean - made for a delightful holiday and Keith and Christine's kindness did everything to make us feel so happily relaxed. The house is easy to find and ideally situated for exploring the area - in easy reach of things to see and do. We really do highly recommend staying - and would love to do so again!

A lovely property hidden away in the French countryside near the historic town of Monpazier
We had a lovely two weeks in this property and Keith and Christine were very welcoming on arrival and throughout our stay. The gîte is located in a very rural forest location about 10 minutes drive from the beautiful bastide town of Monpazier, which has a number of restaurants and shops as well as a bustling market on Thursdays. At busy times, be prepared to park and walk a little although, like all the towns we visited, there is always parking somewhere and nearly always free. The nearest large supermarkets are about 25 minutes drive but do try to shop locally if you can. Our favourite restaurant in Monpazier was Privilège du Périgord which had some interesting twists on the standard Périgord fare of duck and foie gras. This area of the Périgord is a little quieter than the main Dordogne region which is about 40-60 mins drive to the north but there is still plenty of interest in the other bastide towns and chateaus (Biron being the nearest) and not far away from the Lot where we stayed previously which is quieter still. Bergerac, Sarlat and Cahors are all within reach and worth a visit. The accommodation is set within the huge converted stone barn that makes up Keith and Christine’s home but with its own courtyard and entrance. The barn walls are very thick which ensures it remained cool even during the heat of August. The rooms are large and very well finished with a kitchen/dining/lounge, bedroom and beautiful bathroom which has both bath and shower. The photos didn’t do it justice! The kitchen was well equipped with a large range cooker, fridge freezer and dishwasher. There is also a washing machine which we used a couple of times. Outside there is a covered dining area with a gas barbeque which we used several times. Christine and Keith have neighbours but we hardly ever heard them. It is a very quiet, peaceful and sheltered spot. We have stayed in self-catering accommodation several times in France and elsewhere over the years and this is one of the best and we thoroughly recommend it.

It is also very charmingly decorated and tastefully furnished. Our hosts Chris and Keith were super nice and helpful. La grange is in the middle of the forest, thus very quite, and at the same time very well located. Many beautiful spots can be reached within an hour.

A fabulous retreat in the forest and base for exploring the Dordogne.
My husband and I stayed here for 8 days in September 2022. We could not rate the property or experience more highly. Chris and Keith have built and curated the perfect retreat in the forest for their guests. The accommodation is generous in size, very well appointed and beautifully decorated. We did a shop first having stayed in some very basic properties previously; however, Chris had left us a welcome pack including fresh milk, butter, bread, cheese and wine - which was thoroughly enjoyed. There were other basics and practical / nice touches provided which were very much appreciated over the course of our stay. All in all, this was probably the best equipped accommodation we have stayed in - especially for avid cooks and picnickers like ourselves. There is a lovely private yard area with well positioned tables and sun loungers to track the sun during the day. Indeed we spent a couple of evenings watching the Milky Way pass overhead and even saw a couple of shooting stars! The location is a great base for some of the sights of the Dordogne. We originally intended to make more day trips further afield but we ended up staying more local and sometimes just stayed where we were and enjoyed the peace and tranquillity of the forest (even glimpsing some wild boar and birds of prey). Finally, Chris and Keith were perfect hosts - always on hand for advice, assistance and chats. To you both, keep living the dream and thank you!
