This small one room cabin is mostly furnished with cast-offs that Goodwill probably rejected: mattresses, pillows, bedding and towels that mostly seem to date back fifty years and have had hard use in the interim, a decrepit fridge and mustard-colored stove that look to be from the 1950's, two heavily frayed and stained carpets simply piled one on top of the other, and a minimally outfitted kitchen (for example, there are only three water glasses, no small plates, terrible knives, no serving spoons, etc.). Rustic is one thing but this place shows a lack of care that is off-putting and wears one down. In addition to the above, there was no fan or window in the bathroom, the deck on three sides is quite high and has no railing, one interior wall and the deck were partially painted and then left, the front door is rusting and has a large crack under it, there was a large gap in the screen repaired with peeling scotch tape, one of the french doors barely opened... and the list goes on. The shorefront and dock were several hundred feet away and not accessible because there is another cabin a few feet from the dock so you feel you are invading the space of its occupants and there is no other way to the beach because of the high overgrown vegetation. We left two days early and moved to a B and B. We thought of leaving after the first day but we had paid the non-refundable cost upfront so we stayed and tried to make the best of it.
However, all that being said, some people wrote in the old spiral notebook that was left on the desk for comments that they loved the place. (Being allowed to bring dogs may be part of the appeal that encourages one to overlook many defects...)
Also, one of the owners, Ben, stopped by late in the week to ask how our stay was. When we spent a half hour showing him the above items which were not, to our mind, in keeping with the price or the photos, he would not give us a refund but did promise that he would take responsibility for seriously updating the place. It could be cozy and sweet if some money and care were put into it. So, if the photos show such changes in the future, it might be fine.
NB, the cabin does not have Internet which the owner said is on the website so missing that fact was completely my fault - but it is worth emphasizing.
Luckily, there is a wonderful place, the Little Notch Bakery, in Southwest Harbor that has amazing pastries and coffee plus Internet access. And... there is Acadia!
