Very convenient hotel with charm
The hotel was good value for money and excellently placed near Potsdamer Platz and many sights were within robust walking distance. It also had excellent transport links to the airports with trains, buses and UBahn nearby. There was plenty of modestly priced eating nearby and two excellent, cheap restaurants serving German specialities practically next door. Our room was very large with a 4 poster bed, Chaise, 2 armchairs desk etc. However it was to the front which was noisy. We thought of asking to move to the back but enjoyed the fading elegance of the room so much that we decided to put up with the traffic noise. We got used to it. The hotel fittings are not modern but it had a certain fading elegance and all the essentials worked very well, our room also had tea and coffee making facilites. The staff were very efficient and helpful. We thought the Altberlin excellent value for money and not the usual sterility of modern chains.

This could be a great value hotel.
This place is charming. Well located to most of Berlin's attractions and reasonable rates. Unfortunately, I concur with earlier comments, to the effect that reception staff are at best indifferent and one is downright rude. Such a shame.

Frustrating
The receptionist of the afternoon is so rude, that it is unbelievable. The hotel cannot be sold as "has elevator" because you still have a high staircase to climb with the luggage. The WiFe is rare and they tell you, we know there is a problem. If you need WiFi don't go. Hard to recommend this hotel.

Conveneint, clean and freindly hotel
A very pleasant family run hotel. A very sympathetic and practical upgrade of a historic building. Room very comfortable and quiet. Buffet breakfast excellent. Well placed for access to many Berlin city highlights and attractions, and lots of public transport options. Staff excellent. Overall Hotels.com value excellent.

Shabby chic or in need of modernisation
A bit off the beaten track in an "improving" area but buses stop right outside so just five minutes from Potzdammer Platz itself. A lap dancing club opposite adds(?) to the charm. Rooms are all different but largely generous and high ceiling end; our bathroom was a shower room only and compact but adequate; brass/iron bed was very comfortable and possessed fairy lights! Reasonably quiet considering it is on a main road. Depending on your point of view, charming or decrepit; I loved it. The staff all speak English and are very obliging.

Better than your normal modern box room hotels..
This nice little hotel is 10-15 mins walk from Potsdamer Platz. It has an older charm, not your run-of-the-mill modern boxroom. We booked a regular room and ended up with a small suite. Comfortable, spacious, clean and warm.

Hotel with Potential but not so great
The Hotel has potential however the upkeep is poor. The staff attitude needs severe adjustment, Germany or not when a guest ask a question the reception staff should not roll their eyes at them, it's plain rude in every corner of the planet. The room had a crack between the celing and the wall. The minifridge to at least cool water did not work, the bathroom shower was clogged, the curtain dirty and the toilet almost underneath the sink. Not to mentioned the room is located on a busy street and the room had a bus stop in front of it. The room was warm so we try to open the window to get air but the noise from the party people was infallible. The tip of the iceberg was when one night we decide to eat at the hotel restaurant and the staff proceed to tell us ot was closed for private guests. Nevermind I'm a guest or the other guests, apparently we don't matter if we spent money to stay in your hotel. Overall I would not recommend this hotel.

We really enjoyed our stay in what is a great hotel. If you are looking for an identikit chain hotel the this is not for you. If however you are looking for character and charm then you can't go wrong.

Quirky place
We stayed here because of the good location, reasonable price and quirky interiors. We were not disappointed by any of the three! It's an interesting place to stay, and is very clean and tidy. The staff are available 24h which is handy, but they weren't particularly chatty or friendly. We didn't eat in the restaurant as it was closed the 2 nights we were there, so can't comment. Positives: - very clean - staff available 24h - free wifi - large rooms with high ceilings - decent location - 10 minutes walk to Potsdamer Platz, where there are plenty of restaurants and bars The only negatives to flag which lead to the 3/5 rating are: - the beds were uncomfortable - very soft mattresses, and the pillows are basically a large bag of feathers, so it's difficult to stay there for more than 2 nights - the rooms facing the road are noisy, as it's a main road with traffic and sirens all night

Good hotel close to potsdama platz
Good location, clean, comfy room, excellent, helpful, friendly staff. Only down points -a bit noisy because of the traffic and the windows and bathroom door needed repainting. If you want a modern boutique hotel this is not for you. The decor was 1930s/40s which was quite quirky and different and in keeping with building and as advertised.

Idea location near to centre of Berlin
A really lovely Hotel in an ideal location near to all attractions in Berlin. Lovely bar and restaurant great beer! Didn't eat here but the food looked great and smelt good! All staff were really friendly and helpful. Hotel was a little noisy in the mornings, the rooms were comfortable and clean. Good Wifi. Don't be put off by the golden dolls strip club across the road!! Lots of shops and bars close by.

Great find in the budget range.
Great budget hotel in the Potsdam area. Very old building in great condition. Room has everything you need. Area is great and close to the underground. Breakfast was value for money.

Being fed up of the usual 'plastic fantastic hotels' I was looking for something different. I am so glad that I booked the Alt Berlin as the decor is genuinely turn of the 19C, comfortable and complimented my cultural visit. Even the evening meal menu features old Berlin dishes. Although about 15 minutes walk from Potsdamer Platz it is on the M48 and M85 bus routes.

Quaint old-style hotel in the heart of Berlin
This hotel was perfect for my three days in Berlin. It has a beautiful courtyard, a wonderful breakfast area, and the most wonderful decor. The courtyard has a waterfountain and is open air. The breakfast is the full meal deal. The decor is old school style with updated rooms! I LOVED this hotel and so did my friend who stayed with me. Highly recommended. The staff were awesome! They even put a bandaid on my heel for me. ;)

On arrival the receptionist couldn' t find our booking and on leaving he wanted to charge us for breakfast that was already included in the booking. The shower kept moving when on, which was annoying. Hairdryer stopped working after about 30 seconds use. The drinks facilities in the room were a waste of time as they did not replenish the coffee and there was no english tea at all! On the plus side the hotel was clean and the staff friendly and there was a bar if you wanted a drink. It was near a bus stop which was convenient for getting into the main part of the city but it was on a busy road and due to the fact that the hotel did not have air conditioning I'm sure it would have been noisy at the front of the hotel, as it was hot during our stay. The decor did need refreshing but the room was a good size and the beds were comfortable.

Pleasant hotel in a convenient location
Located three bus stops from Potsdamer Platz and the S-Bahn, with going on to the Hauptbahnhoff and the other to Alexanderplatz, the hotel is very convenient for sightseeing in Berlin. The Weimar décor is fun, but the Wi-Fi and bathroom were thoroughly modern. The breakfast buffet was excellent (nice and hardly needed lunch!), and the restaurant food was good in the evening. The staff were friendly and efficient. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and would go back there if we visit Berlin in the future.
