We’ve used this hotel for about 17 yrs and it’s always been quiet, with attentive staff, and very clean. The only thing I would comment on for this stay is that there was a very strong electric air freshener on in the room when we arrived, which was not good for me as I have allergies. It was soon switched off and the window opened for proper fresh air!

I used this hotel for a one night stop over when needing to do an emergency hospital visit. For that reason it was perfectly acceptable. The positives were the quality of the breakfast and the comfort of the bed. It’s also in a nice area if you happen to be visiting the historic part of the county – but that was not my purpose. The negatives were that there was no food available in the hotel after I checked in at 9 o’clock, the facilities in the room were a little bit outdated, and most big all there was no proper shower – just a hose to hand hold from the bath taps I’ve no idea if the other rooms were better equipped, but I did not choose the cheapest option so assume not I would use this place again for a one night stop, but I would probably find a different option for a longer stay. Particular credit to the lady waiting on tables at breakfast and for the cook who provided excellent food served piping hot with a good amount of choice this morning. Summary – certainly acceptable but not memorable

A really lovely traditional independent hotel with courteous staff who went to huge trouble to make sure I had a great stay. My room was really comfortable and spotless, if a little bit dated. Breakfast was superb and real care had been taken with it. It was a real treat to stay in a hotel where service and hospitality were the only mission, not just the pursuit of profit.

The original building is great, the staff are fantastic the food great. My wife is gluten free and they couldn’t be more helpful and didn’t need reminding at breakfast, even when they were busy. Would I stay again, in a heart beat. Thank you to all the staff for a great visit

Really liked the look of the hotel and surrounding area. The property has character but could do with some modernisation. One of the window couldn't be shut in our bedroom and the bathroom is quite dated. The bedroom and bed was large but I didnt sleep well as the bed felt as though it was uneven and uncomfortable. Breakfast was nice and the service was good and quick but the sausage looked very anemic and the beans cold.

Great stay
Stayed for one night in room 1. Checking in was easy and the manager was welcoming and polite. The room was what most people would probably refer to as dated but I liked it. Lots of space, a comfortable king size bed, tea/coffee facilities and complimentary bottles of water. The bathroom appears spacious but, and this is the only negative, the roof is quite low so if you prefer showers this room probably isn’t for you. At 5ft 2 I managed but taller then that and I hope you like baths rather then showers. Breakfast in the morning was delicious, the scrambled eggs were the best I’ve had, which I know sounds ott but really, try them! All in all we’d definitely come back should we get the opportunity

I arrived just as they were closing the kitchen, but they were happy to make me a sizeable halloumi salad and pour me a nice cold glass of wine. The room could probably do with a refresh but then again so could I. It was quiet and the bed was firm and comfortable. No paranormal activity. I slept well even with the window open. Breakfast was perfectly decent. In summary: Better than the Premier inn but not as good as Claridges.

Traditional British charm with fabulous service.
Traditional hotel in a picture postcard village. Hotel is in a beautiful location and given its style is not fitted with the latest mod cons such as air-conditioning . However it has a lovely feel to it and the staff were very attentive and service was excellent. Food in the restaurant is superb for both evening meals and breakfast. Loved it.

A real gem. SO quiet and perfectly placed to visit Battle and local area. We had queen size bed with a giant sofa bed for our daughter! Staff were friendly and attentive and the building was beautiful and full of character which we loved! Lovely breakfast, included in cost. Placed in Sedlescombe, a picturesque village; woke up to the local geese! Will return next year.
