The neighborhood
The Olympic village of Barcelona is built on the sea front by the Port Olympic Marina. The two towers with a height of 153.5 m dominate the Barcelona skyline, a nice view from our house. There are numerous sculptures along the sea front and a wide variety of restaurants, bars and 'chiringuitos' to enjoy the Mediterranean cuisine. Another must-see is the Torre de las Aigues (1905); The Fish by the sea, designed by Frank Gehry, a huge copper-coloured steel structure that glimmers in the sunlight; the Plaza de Toros Monumental (1914) with it's strongly influenced by Mudéjar and Byzantine architecture facade; the elegant Parc de la Ciutadella (1888) and its Monumental Cascade partially designed by Gaudí; and the Barceloneta, the old fisherman's area where you can feel the Mediterranean atmosphere you would expect to find in a fishing community, are some year round tourist attractions that you will not want to miss. And all of them within walking distance. The Sagrada Familia by Gaudí (1882) is 1.5 miles, 11 min. by bus (10). Take the subway (Ciutadella / Vila Olímpica L4) and in a quick ride of two stops you get to The Cathedral (13th-15th centuries), the astonishing Gothic Quarter where you walk back in History to the 10th century; and the Picasso Museum. One more stop and you will be by the well-known Plaza Cataluña and Las Ramblas.
