Disliked: Cleanliness
Cute but had some issues
The cottage is very cute and gives the experience of an authentic Irish country cottage however it wasn’t as tidy as a renter should expect and we had issues with the hot water and radiator heat the entire time of our stay. We addressed the issues with the owner and he tried to rectify the hot water and heating but we never had consistency the entirety of our stay. We also brought up the tidiness issue right away, we cleaned up ourselves, and he said he would address it with his housekeeping person. Also it is advertised as being an 8 minute walk to shops, pubs and restaurants, a big part of the appeal for us. In actuality that walk is on a very narrow, busy road with little space on either side to actually walk. On a positive note, there is a lovely fireplace in the living room that kept us cozy in that room with plenty of fuel. The owner, Gerrid, tried to help us with our issues and gave us lots of good suggestions of things to do in the area. He also purchased a coffee maker for the kitchen when we inquired about one.

Full of surprises (Not the good kind)
I have rented properties in Ireland through VRBO many time in the past and have been quite satisfied. Not this time. Surprise #1: When I rent a holiday home I expect the electricity and heat to be included in the price, don't you? Not so at this house. When we arrived we were advised to immediately drive into town to a certain store where we should top off the electric to ensure we had power. Then we were told that if we used the furnace to provide heat or hot water, we would be charged for the oil used during our stay. Surprise #2: The property is listed as being in Ballyshannon. It is several miles from Ballyshannon, much closer to Beleek in No Ireland. In fact the house virtually sits on the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The result is that the cell phone keeps jumping from Vodaphone ie to the local UK carrier. Outcalling is difficult if not nearly impossible. We had to drive to Ballyshannon to get a signal so we could call the cottage owner to tell him there was no heat. Surprise #3: The owner did come out to get the heat started for us, and said that the house would be toasty warm in no time. We ran the heat full all night and froze. The heat was minimal and the blankets were inadequate. Surprise #4: The house had not been well cleaned. The floors were dirty and the fronts of the appliances had not been cleaned at all. Surprise #5: There was a bathtub! My wife loves baths and was looking forward to a nice warm bath to take the chill out of her bones since there was little heat in the house. Bathtub, but no drain stopper. Not useable - what a surprise. Surprise #6: The house sits very close to a major national road with a lot of traffic. Not well insulated and very noisy. We had booked 4 nights the the cottage but left after just one. Just couldn't stay there. The only good surprise was, after complaining to Sykes Cottages, they refunded the last 3 nights' payments. Kudos to them for doing that.
