Atrani is a quiet town with a small beach (we did not use it due to rainy and somewhat cool weather). The apartment is large, well equipped, and well serviced by Francesco, the owner. He met us at the bus stop with an associate, carried our bags to the apartment (Atrani is built into the hillside, so most apartments, like this one, involve climbing stairs -- about 70-80 steps, in this case!), and came back the next day to help us figure out the washing machine. (Nothing wrong with the machine, we just had trouble understanding the instructions in Italian). There is a large bedroom, and a verry large living/dining room/kitchen, with two couches that can convert into additional sleeping space. The piazza has at least two excellent restaurants and a couple of bar/coffee shops--we loved sitting out there at dusk, drinking wine and watching the neighborhood activity.
Amalfi, loud and noisy, is a 15 minute walk away, most of it through a pedestrian tunnel so you do not have to dodge the auto traffic (there is also a longer hike over the hill, but we did not try that.) From Amalfi you can catch a bus uphill to Ravello, or along the coast in either direction, and can also get a boat to Positano, Sorrento, Maiora, Salerno, or Capri.
I can't say enough about the excellent service provided by Francesco -- he was always quick to respond to questions, and sent someone to help us back down the stairs with our luggage when we left. We hope to stay here again!
